CLIMBING THE ICONIC SINOPAH MOUNTAIN IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK’S TWO MEDICINE LAKE AREA
There's a good chance you've seen this iconic mountain in a photo somewhere! Sinopah Mountain is the crown jewel of the Two Medicine area, not because it is the highest, biggest, or most dramatic, but because of its striking appearance as it rises from across of Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park. Sinopah proves to be an irresistible visual magnet, its lake-facing profile an unbroken wall of cliffs sweeping upward in classic Glacier Park formate. SInopah Mountain is very easy to look at, very photogenic and an excellent mountain to scramble and climb. To reach the summit, you'll be hiking along a completely off-trail route with significant sections of Class 3 scrambling and exposure to steep drop-offs. This route requires careful route-finding through the scramble section to keep the difficulty at Class 3. Like most summits the objective is daunting but once you start climbing it totally reveals itself!

The Mountain Matt is at it again! Quality climbing as always, brotha. How do you feel about collabbing some time?
Thanks Jared! That sounds interesting but I have a limited amount of time off to go on trips and adventures with family and close friends. If this was a full time job I'd be down for sure! I truly appreciate you reaching out, cheers Jared!
So good
Thank you so much for that😁
If it looks that good on computer monitor it is 10 times better in reality! I wish I was there with you. AMAZING!
You are 100% right! Those cameras never do it justice. I just hope to capture and share our adventures as best as I can 😃. Cheers!
Good stuff. Whatta place
The Two Med area of Glacier is always a tad less busy but I think it's just as beautiful as the rest of the park. I'm starting to get the itch to go back already🤣
Killer!
It was a good day to say the least 😃 ... cheers!
Awesome moose encounter. That looks like a fun summit. Definitely adding this to my to do list.
The moose was so much fun! It added a little energy immediately in the morning. That scramble is great! Fairly quick and not to technical 👍🏼.

Our family has also hiked to Iceberg Lake. It doesn't get much prettier than that lake.
Absolutely 💯!
The Rockies and Sierra's have their 14ers, but they don't compare to the ruggedness and all-around mountaineering skills necessary to summit a peak in the Cascades. Love it.
Absolutely 💯! The only mountains that might possibly top the cascades are the Canadian Rockies. We were out there this past summer. I couldn’t believe how incredible those mountains are. Canadian Rockies and the N Cascades are tops for me 😁👍🏼
Hey Matt, what an incredible epic adventure you went on. Incredible views. Love your channel, man. Keep killin it!!
Thanks Jason! We've been getting after it the past few years 💪🏼😁. Can't wait to share this past summer's adventures! Cheers!

Thanks for the great video! Subbing now!
Absolutely 👍🏼, glad you found the channel!
Ever since the first time I saw a picture of Dragon's Tail, I have wanted to climb it. That part up through the couloir was white knuckle. Wow, amazing job. I'm assuming you had to down climb back through the couloir? Great video!
Same here that mountain ridge is spectacular! The couloir itself isn’t that high, although it is fairly steep and the rock sucks. The down climb was sketch but not as bad as I thought. Thanks!
Another amazing spot. I really enjoy the places you find. Good stuff!👍👍 All I can do is put it on a list and hope to make it one day.
Thank you! I love trying to find the obscure beautiful areas. My list is always growing as well 😁👍🏼
Beautiful area. Awesome views all the way up.
Yes indeed!
8:13 was epic!!!
The view up there was tremendous 🤩👍🏼 I’ll never forget that blue color of that lake!
Oh man I miss glacier so much!! Beautiful hike
I know how you feel! Going to be a long winter 🥶. 2 more Glacier vids coming out over the next couple months to tide you over 😁. Glad you enjoyed the video! Cheers!
Glaicer is so beautiful! Great trek! The scenery and views are just amazing 😊
That park never disappoints 👍🏼😁
Hey Matt, Rich here from Florida. I turn 79 this Tuesday 11/5 obviously too old to follow in your footsteps but when you post a vid you take me to places I love to see. Thks for all the great treks and vids.
Rich I'm so glad the videos are resonating with you and you're enjoying them so much! Just started editing the adventures from the past summer, can't wait to share them with ya'll! Cheers mate!
Well done gents!! I’ve been back and forth with how to visit Glacier for the first time. I’m more of a backpacker but with the permitting process being what it is, I think I’ll take your peak bagging approach instead. Also caught your Sahale vid. Planning on coming west again this year and doing that and Shark-fin but I’ll be alone so more than likely won’t top out. Hit 60 in 3 days. Nice work and thanks for posting.
I can't recommend Glacier enough. It's right up there with North Cascades, Tetons, and Banff for me. If you can possibly get a permit in Glacier, go for it. The backcountry would be sick! We're actually looking at backpacking more so we can go deeper and find better vistas 😃! Thanks for reaching out and enjoy the mountains when you get out there, it sounds like you like to plan WAY ahead in advance like I do 👍🏼! Cheers!
Good stuff, sir! 💪
Thanks Tim! We gotta get you guys to Glacier someday!
Thank you for another epic awesome adventure Gents! Keep on keeping on Matt!
Thanks Jay! It's always nice to hear from you! You've been around since the beginning I believe...😃
Great Video. Keep hiking
Thanks Doug! Will do 😃👍🏼
Matt let me go hiking with you! Forreal
If I had more days to actually be in the mountains that could possibly work 😁 … most of my outings are scheduled months in advance since I don’t have unlimited PTO unfortunately 😂
Of you don't mind me asking, what brand, model, boots do you wear? I bought a very comfortable pair of Merrels, but 2yrs later, I blew out the toe in Idaho.
I buy a new pair of La Sportiva GTX mid tx4 ever year or two. I absolutely love them! They’re great for hiking and give awesome grip while scrambling and climbing. I think I’ve gone through almost 5 pair now.
@@TheMountainMatt thank you
Absolutely 👍🏼
From the spot you stopped there is a class 3 wrap around to the N/NE side of the summit which is much easier, but still quite exposed (many would want to rappel vs downclimb.
Right on 👍🏼 definitely bringing rope on missions like that in the future. You live and learn.
Great video Matt! 🏔️🤘🏻
Thanks so much! That day holds a special place in all our memories and hearts ~ Mount Rainier is top 3 most beautiful I've seen. It's a place that is hard to capture and relay in a video. Have you been?
Inspiring man. Nice job!
Thanks 😃! I appreciate the positivity.
Great video work, did this trail in August n its not for the faint of heart! Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for people to die falling or have to get rescued from this trail. I'm glad your friend made it safe, but hope people aren't encouraged to attempt things beyond their skill level. It is an amazing view!
Nice hike! I think the Wonderland and its many side trails are also great, but it's tough to beat these views 🏔
Rainier is incredible 🤩👍🏼
Oh man, kitty litter scree is THE WORST. Another awesome adventure!
Those mountains are made out of sand 🤣
@@TheMountainMatt 😂
May have failed on reaching the summit, but MAN did you win with the overall views! DAMN
Can’t win them all 😫 👍🏼 the research on the ridgewalk to the summit was supposed to be insane! Bummed about that one but gotta keep the boss happy 😆
That couloir looked gnarly! Was the ridge itself more gnarly? The summit shots made the ridge look rather broad. That shot where you were showing where you guys were dropping down and cutting across, the base of the ridge there looked doable! Just curious is all. :) Awesome content as per usual, amazing views!
The side hilling to the couloir was fine 👍🏼 the couloir itself is pretty chossy. Once we got to the ridge it was smooth sailing! That was Adam’s first ever climb/adventure so I didn’t want to push it by dropping down the backside of Dragons Tail to Hidden Lake. It looked to be at least a class 4 down climb and to sketch for a beginner. The couloir was spicey enough. Very fun and beautiful though 👍🏼.
@@TheMountainMatt Ah! That makes sense. The camera definitely distorts the scenery sometimes.
Heeyyyy! You're the same age (approximately) as I am! I turn 46 coming up in November. Seems like a lot of these channels are run by young bucks. I know its an older video, but those glacier views are sweet! Those are some of my favorite hikes, the glacier view and/or traverse ones.
We gotta do this stuff while we’re still relatively young 🤣 getting harder every year 😅
@@TheMountainMatt I feel that man. I'm not even doing the stuff you do either. 😂
Just got off of Mount Woodring in the Tetons last night! The girls first Teton summit! Feelin closer to 50 that’s for sure 🤣
Awesome day! Dragon’s tail has some of the best views in the whole park. That scramble up (and down) the side of the couloir was so fun.
Such a fun scramble 👍🏼😃 someone died a few days after we were up there 😬 so sad
This is the best bang for your buck on Rainier with such up close views of Steamboat Prow separating the Winthrop and Emmons glaciers. Also Curtis Ridge, Willis Wall and Liberty Ridge up to Liberty Cap. I spent a lot of time on Rainier this summer it's so fascinating. You'd also dig Observation Rock and Tokaloo Rock I'm pretty sure if you go back sometime. Cheers Matt!
Thanks for the advice 💯👍🏼! My girls were just asking about Rainier today. It’s SO underrated!
Damn, too bad you guys were on a time constraint. Could have used the broad side of the ice axe to carve out steps...but that is not fast work. Good call on turning back! Amazing views regardless!
Sometimes it just doesn’t feel right 😬 you learn and live to climb another day 😃👍🏼
@@TheMountainMatt Yes indeed!
Been loving these videos! Great content, great footage, I'm glad you popped up in my suggested videos. This looks like a mindblowing area to explore! Hopefully I can come down from Alaska someday and get at least a sample of what that has to offer.
Glad you found the channel 👍🏼! I’ve been back to Washington for 3 straight years now, it’s definitely a place to check out! I can’t imagine Alaska though! Someday I think I’ll be there 😃
Cool video Matt! I climbed Stuart a few weeks ago when we had our last full moon and once I got to the summit I noticed Cashmere Mt as it stands relatively by itself a little north from the summit of Stuart to where as you have Dragontail and the rest of the Enchantments peaks and basin to the east/NE. Not sure if you've done Stuart but I'm sure you'd dig it. I also climbed Black Peak for the 3rd time 12 days ago super clear warm day and I have to tell you it was also a non stop party for my eyeballs LMAO! I'd climb with you anytime buddy. Cheers!
The colors out there gotta be amazing the past few weeks! We’re in the Tetons right now and they’re still real good! I thought the Cascade colors were some of the best I’ve ever seen 🤩🤯
@@TheMountainMatt Oh ya that sounds awesome! I've yet to visit there but sure it must be amazing right now. I'm trying to decide where in the N Cascades I want to go tomorrow or Friday. It's larch madness! Hit me up when you come back out this way I'm always up for a new climb!
So sick! What month was this?
Thanks! That was end of June a few years ago 😃👍🏼

Thank you for the video. I'm still debating doing the final ascent. How was the scree?😂
The scree wasn’t bad. There’s some tricky climbing at the final step to the summit. Down climbing was tricky as well. Not terrible though 👍🏼
Just ridiculous terrain.
I am not kidding about Barronette either. Just jump up on ridge across from Ice Box canyon. Only in good weather. Take gallon of water each! If hot. GREAT LONG DAY HIKE. GREAT PEAK. Electric is a pain 6 false summits talus up top. I like Quadrant over there. Lots of bear traffic over there too.
The giant bowl of woods and biggest meadow is muddy creek. Bear maul alley. I don't go on trails in the tooth. Hit it from 212. I take four dogs. It is the wild. Wild as it gets lower 48. Start three lakes back from pass cooke city side. The lake under clay butte is literally on the road. Same up past store the one closest to road. Lake chain up and out to Spirit Mountain area. Granite is farther. Late July snow is usually beat down. Early August. Water is still ripping.
