STUCK in French Polynesia— Now What?
After deciding to leave French Polynesia 6 months earlier than we had initially planned, it seemed like everything was lining up perfectly for us to make a last-minute trip to New Zealand ahead of cyclone season. Unfortunately, our weather window disappeared in a matter of hours, ultimately forcing us to check back into the country and commit to staying through April. Join us for this transitional period where we fully embrace Plan B- watching a local outrigger canoe race and starting to make our way back East.

      Thank you for your kind words! We’ve just had some miserable and unpredictable weather this season and haven’t been thrilled with the anchorage conditions (VERY deep, often rocky or covered in coral, new regulations + hostile locals + termite swarms in the Society Islands) it’s difficult to pick up a camera during those times and probably unpleasant to watch, but we speak more openly about it on our blog if you’d like to check that out! :)

    That's my exact attitude about everything. I do not feel good being rushed. I plan out my travel for a reason. If I feel rushed, either mentally or in reality, I don't go because bad shit happens. I'm sure you have your reasons for posting short videos, but I'd truly love longer episodes. Your approach to sailing (and just about everything else) is pretty much how I go about my daily life, and I enjoy your videos very much.

    Might want to move the water maker intake near the keel so that it stays underwater the whole time. I use an AC intake for it and it is directly above the keels. I can't tell from your solar diagram how your panels are laid out in terms of shade. I have 2 panels per side on the arch 540Watts each) and each pair is on a 85A MPPT and then 2 540Watt panels on the hard top that are on their on mppt at 30A each. I upgraded my batteries recently to 1200AH and with 3100W of solar manages to fill the batteries on a daily basis and even allows us to run the Air Conditioning off the solar panels (they don't even use the batteries during the day.

    • @HollyandRay
      @HollyandRay 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @chadconnor356 We do have long stay visas. Although it is beautiful here, this is not our ideal cruising grounds. The weather patterns and anchoring laws are changing, and the locals are unhappy with the amount of boats here. If we could go back in time, we’d skip the long stay, stop briefly in the Marquesas, spend the bulk of our time in the Tuamotus, and stop briefly in the Societies on our way out. However, you might find it better to have the long stay and not use it than to feel rushed! We wrote a very detailed blog post on the visa application process if you’re interested, it’s on our blog under the category “other” :)

    Something I frequently wonder about is what do you sailors do about sunblock? Do you put it on every day in order to lessen skin cancer risks? I've definitely seen a lot of people who don't apply any at all and they look like 20 years older than they actually are after only a few years of constant sun exposure

    • @HollyandRay

      Great question! We put sunblock on our face and neck everyday, but usually cover up the rest of our bodies with UPF clothing, hats, sunglasses etc. and stay in the shade as much as we can. Extra sunblock and long sleeve shirts when swimming.

    Hi, regarding safety, is there times when you'd rather be in a mono-hull?? extreme wind and weather? Or catamarans are safer than I thought ?( I'm a novice sailor)

      We have never been in weather where we’ve felt unsafe on our catamaran, but a nice big heavy monohull is also a great platform.

    Great set up. Nice to see that more and more boats use technology to monitor this. I have a similar anchor watch setup on my boat and the warning goes on all Sonos speakers which is great and can’t be missed. My problem is when off the boat the pushover notification might be missed as it only makes a bing. How did you make it play until acknowledged?

    • @HollyandRay
      @HollyandRay หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you set the alert to emergency priority it will keep alerting until acknowledged!

      @@HollyandRay thank you for the reply. message is set to emergency I cannot set something else. I am looking at the state under anchor alarm on signalk. It come to pushover as emergency, not sure if that is a text or an actual option. Where do you change the setting so it comes as priority?

    I would love to see a video doing a deep dive into all your electronics and monitoring systems! You guys have a killer setup and I've been incorporating lots of the same stuff into our Passport 40. What type of GPS antenna are you using to make sure you're getting the most accurate position data?

      @HollyandRay หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the kind words! We’ve hesitated to do a public deep dive simply because we do not want to act as tech support for a large group😅 We have more resources about our system up on our Patreon, though, including wiring diagrams, if you’re technologically inclined! The Vesper GPS antenna is the one we use for our anchor alarms since it’s always on.

      @@HollyandRay I totally understand that! I typically play dumb just to keep people from constantly asking me questions 😅 I'm already running Signalk, grafana, and OpenCPN but that other open source nav software you're using for the anchor alarm looks awesome!
