Unexpected Engine Damage: Why My Cessna Has Been Grounded
After an unexpected engine issue, my Cessna T210M has been grounded for repairs over the past month, keeping me out of the skies. In this update, I’m sharing the details of what went wrong, the repairs needed, and how I’m navigating this downtime as The Flying Salesman.
As many of you know, I use my plane as a “company car” to call on customers, blending my passion for aviation with my role as Director of Marketing at Aero-Mach. This setback has been challenging, but it’s also a real part of life in business aviation.
Thank you to everyone who’s reached out with support-I appreciate it, and I can’t wait to get back to flying soon. In the meantime, here’s an inside look at the realities of aviation maintenance and what’s next for my journey!

Your audio is crap. Too hard to finish your video. But you managed to sell tie downs
what is the purpose of these 'routes'? (i'm a new pilot)
These are published routes that organize the traffic flow into and out of busy airspace. These are used when flying on an IFR flight plan and will not be used when you are flying VFR.
@@TheFlyingSalesman ok gotcha, thanks
The very best part of this video is your discussion of loading the REEKO STAR from PUDJE. I am a CFII and have a list of six "GPS Tasks Pilots Don't Know How to Do." Understanding that certain tasks require you to load a fix behind when you expect to go is one of them. It not only comes up in SIDs and STARs but also with somehing as a clearance with vectors to intercept an airway.
Thanks, I am glad you were able to glean something from it. Blue skies!
This video was perfect for me..great explanations!
I am glad you found it helpful...
Hi, I noticed that your passenger door is unlocked
And its even on the checklist.... SMH
I hate Apple, so I'm against using Foreflight because they are exclusively on iPad.
I understand that. Have you looked into Garmin's Plane Sync? I am not sure if it is Android compatible or not.
HDG
Thank you. Departures and arrivals aren't covered very well anywhere else. I'm an Instrument student and your videos are a huge help. You're a great teacher. Do you have an IFR departure/arrival checklist?
Im sitting in my company Subaru up in New England as a sales rep in the medical field. I sure would prefer to have your vehicle.😊 if you know of any great companies looking for a great sales rep in New England, let me know. I have a capable PA 28-180 I can get around in.
Butter flight! Nice job! We office at KSDL if ever in the area. 👍🏼
That's fantastic. I do make it there a couple times a year.
What happened before?
The lifters were not spinning like they were supposed to and it took awhile for the mechanic to get to it.
Been waiting for this! 🎉
Me too! We have some pics to take.
@TheFlyingSalesman Yes we do! Looking forward to it
Exciting! I just passed my instrument checkride, looking forward to more videos to keep learning
Me too! Thank you for the vote of confidence.
Hello Matt, you had a video where youn noted a power loss or higher egt’s in flight and In am trying to to remember what was the cause of it. So, problem is i have no4 cyl running about 110deg hotter, all other cylinders are running perfectly fuel flow and temps are normal. I think you stated that the problem was magneto issue. I would love to review that video. Can you tell me what the tittle was?
I think you have me mixed up with another TH-camr... My issue is corrosion in the cylinders. I did notice a lack of power recently and my flight yesterday with the new lifters seemed to help. I am happy to discuss further and you are welcome to send me an email. info@theflyingsalesman.com
Good deal! Look forward to more of your videos!👍 Got my girl back in the air last Sunday to break in the new cylinder and the other day got caught up on my approaches! All is right with the world again!😂

Where do you run up in a big airport? hold short line?
@@holylee30 it depends on the airport. If ground control does not direct you to a specific place, then it is at the approach end, but not the hold short line. I may get close but will leave my self enough room to 180 out if the run up reveals something that scrubs the flight. What is your preference?
IMC can be done but I won’t do it single engine and not without a fully trained copilot. I did it by myself in Air Force jets in my 20s and 30s but after flying airliners for 25 years I became a fan of redundancy, both of equipment and number of working brains.
I am very selective about my IMC flights as well for that very reason. It is serious business that needs to be respected.
Hi captain, indeed i miss the flying content amd tips that come along. Thank you for the link of website that keeps your knowledge sharp and accurate (although living in France doesn't help me much on regulations but nice to compare differences between FAA and EASA) I hope to fly jn the US some time soon. One more thing, i really appreciate you tell us going back with an instructor and test your flying skills despite the number of hours you already have. Many never show or even mention it. Lookimg forward to see this happen. Thanks again for you content, hope the engine gets fixed any time soon. Safe flying and happy landings ✈️
Fantastic video. I too appreciate your fly along instruction and commentary. Very informative. Love your content.
I appreciate it! I hope to be up and flying again next week so please stay tuned!
I'm retired Washington ARTCC (ZDC) controller, 12K hour ATP and fly my C414A in the NE a lot. It does help knowing both sides of the mic. Some controllers are very helpful others not so much but most do try to do a good job traffic permitting. I refused VFR to IFR very few times, even when busy, may take a bit of time but I normally could manage it even if I had to ask for help. Controllers do not take down search and rescue information so if that information has not been given to FSS then you'll still need to give that to the FSS. I would ask for that information so it's on the recording just in case but that's only because I was a pilot too. First video I've watched, nice job.
I don't know how you read all this data and keep it in mind, just the notams are crazy
Train, train, train. Never stop training. Thanks for watching and coming along. -TFS
@@TheFlyingSalesman Thank you for the great content and education good sir
Thank you for your content! I was curious what app you use to edit your videos?
I use lightworks to edit. I. Chose it because it was supposed to be good for beginners. If I were to make a recommendation, go ahead and learn premier pro because so many people are using it, you can collaborate on new techniques.
@@TheFlyingSalesman Thank you! One last quick question. How do you keep your cameras charged? My GoPro battery dies after 45 minutes. Are you simply plugging your camera into a portable charger?
@@mustangaviation8882 I use an Anker power bank on extended flights. I also have extra batteries if needed.
Curious, how much time is on the motor? When was it last overhauled? Do you run Aeroshell or Philips Xc20-50?

just got my Lance back from overhaul, took 22 months!! so good to have it back and breaking it in.
Ugh! that sounds terrible!
@@TheFlyingSalesman It was terrible!! engine shop took about 14 months and then the mechanic took 7 months for the reinstall, long story, there were times I felt like my soul was leaving my body haha. Thanks for all you do on your channel really enjoyable and educational, good luck getting everything fixed up.
Rust is the issue. Fly more often to keep the cylinders & other parts wet with oil (to eliminate condensation forming rust.)
@@larrymaloney877 sounds like you are familiar with this?
@@TheFlyingSalesman Basic physics. In a 24-hour weather cycle, the temperature difference causes warm air to cool after sundown & moisture droplets to form. Just like the morning dew on the grass, it forms inside engines. Starting the engine & BRINGING IT UP TO OPERATING TEMPERATURE (even if you don't fly) keeps the moving parts cleaned & coated with lubricant. Oil might need changing even more during periods of idleness; the same moisture on the cylinder walls & lifters collects in the oil. Some oils stick to metal parts better. Synthetics, like Mobile 1 (automotive only) are optimal for coating parts. But may not be formulated for aviation gas. To get up to speed on oil choices, check out this article: Engine Lube 101: Weight, Temps, Analysis Still, start the engine and bring it up to temperature as a maintenance procedure. Or, maybe fly more often (shorter trips but the same hours).
@@TheFlyingSalesman hahahaha
Is it a good idea to mix new lifters with an old cam, you may want to research that
We (myself, A&P, and engine shop) have discussed this at great length. New lifters and old cam is not uncommon. Both the A&P and Engine shop were in agreement as to next steps.
Hopefully you will be back soon, Just love your videos.
Thanks@@billgalante1181 we will be back in the air soon.
High performance and complex gets very expensive
Glad to hear that you have a plan moving forward. I’m hoping to get our #6 cylinder back on this week and get back to flying. Had to send out for an overhauled unit due to cracked valve guide and erroded hole through exhaust port! Happy flying! Hope we both get up sooner than later!👍
@@airplaneenvydiy9913 amen!
Yes. Tell us how to be a test pilot.
Spend the money and 100% synthetic. Maybe if they make a 20W-50 for aviation piston engines. Exxon Aviation Elite 20W-50 is an excellent semi-synthetic. I also stay sharp using X-Plane 12 or MSFS2020. When I’m at the airport I’ll use the Redbird and log the approaches, missed approaches and circle to lands.
@@aviatortrucker6285 Wilco! Thanks for watching.
Full synthetic and leaded fuel do not get along.
@@prodigalpilot well they have a semi synthetic, which is ashless desperant , and should be OK because it is approved for aviation use. I just never liked monograde oils.

Hey dude, do you wear your sunglasses on when you meet with your customers too?
Not unless it is sunny and we are on the ramp. If you want to know why I am wearing them on video, it is because my eyes sometimes wonder to the "B" camera and I feel it is distracting for the viewers to see my eyes shifting. I am still trying to get the hang of all this and filming in the hangar is just a stop gap until I can get back in the plane. It is for the same reason I like to wear sunglasses in the plane by the way. A lot of the time when I am talking in the plane, my eyes scanning the panel and outside can be distracting. The sunglasses mask a lot of this. I hope you enjoy the videos despite the sunglasses and I appreciate you reaching out. Blue skies! -TFS
@@TheFlyingSalesman not likely I am your target audience- old school- I don’t watch videos of people talking while driving or flying because they think it’s cool and they are entertaining. Different if they are demonstrating something. Or highly edited. But it’s your channel so do what you want.
Soloing at 20-30 hrs is perfectly normal, most people are nowhere near ready at 12 hrs, if literally anything goes weird they’d be completely lost.
@@LukeKirk1113 I don’t agree. It is up to each instructor to decide for their student. However, you can’t coddle a pilot into the cockpit. If you are at 20, and especially 30 hours of STEADY training (if the student is not flying enough, that’s on them), then there need to be adult conversations about next steps.
@@TheFlyingSalesman dude the average time to get PPL right now is 60-70 hours. And there’s a huge problem of bad instructors who are producing dangerous pilots. I think it’s blatantly irresponsible to send a student who barely understands how to control the plane out solo. Obviously it’s up to the individual student and instructor, I’ve soloed someone at 15-16 hrs but they were not the typical student. It’s statistically normal to take more that the minimum time to be ready, which broadly speaking is probably a good thing. Outside of your example of that dirtbag CFI.

I’ve had almost the same experience. In more than 3500 hours, I’ve declared an emergency twice. Once when I lost my engine in my experimental while over hostile terrain and once in my PA-46 when ATC declared an emergency on me when I had a rough running engine in IMC. Of course you get the FAA inspectors to show up on site, but as you say, they were very professional and really just want to understand what happened.
