Thanks @boogerwood! I am not afraid to use runway for the sake of a smooth landing. That said, every so often I want to make sure I still got "it". Thanks for coming along!
I'm retired Washington ARTCC (ZDC) controller, 12K hour ATP and fly my C414A in the NE a lot. It does help knowing both sides of the mic. Some controllers are very helpful others not so much but most do try to do a good job traffic permitting. I refused VFR to IFR very few times, even when busy, may take a bit of time but I normally could manage it even if I had to ask for help. Controllers do not take down search and rescue information so if that information has not been given to FSS then you'll still need to give that to the FSS. I would ask for that information so it's on the recording just in case but that's only because I was a pilot too. First video I've watched, nice job.
Very nice video on an important topic. As you mentioned early in the video, one option is to (1) request of Approach/Center a pop-up IFR clearance to destination. Downside of this, especially in busy airspace is the dreaded "unable (I'm too busy)". The option you demonstrate is (2) going off frequency to radio FSS and request for them to prepare and behind-the-scenes file, receive confirmaton from ATC. Downside is the off-frequency time (likely several minutes), which can be quite nerve-wracking, especially in high traffic areas. The option I prefer is demonstrated in the video linked below at 12:02 and is to (3) electronically file an IFR flight plan in-the-air from ForeFlight using my cell phone and then simply request of Approach/Center (at 13:55 in the video below) to pick up that clearance. I've had this work many many times even at 10,000+ AGL... after all, it's effectively a simple text message from ForeFlight to ATC (i.e. bypassing FSS). The upside is zero time off-frequency with Approach/Center. Wayne (DA40 KSBA) Here's the video demonstrating (3)... th-cam.com/video/xDb-C5ffICU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KNSx0pvkqtlFMbSD&t=722
@@GeezerGeekPilot I will check that out. It’s interesting you have such reliable service. Unless I am right over a major metro area, I cannot send/receive texts. Thanks for coming along. Will you be at Oshkosh?
@@TheFlyingSalesman, let me know how option (3) works for you. I expect ForeFlight tries a number of times to connect and send its short message. I'll not be at Oshkosh (not a fan of crowds 🙂). Keep up the good work on the videos.
Hi Matt, it's been many years since I filed a flight plan on the airwaves. I file off my iPad in flight when required. Needs iPad reception. Within a minute or so I am back to ATC to activate my IFR. When flying VFR sometimes ATC won't let me into the next airspace. I file IFR on the iPad and come straight back. Cheeky but it works. Like your content Matt. Cheers
@@TheFlyingSalesman I would like to, but I hadn’t started my planning since I just purchased my own airplane. So I think I may hold off until next year!
Thank you very much! I am about to drop an update on the 210 later today and HOPEFULLY, will be back in the cockpit in the next week or two. Nevertheless, I appreciate the sub and I hope you enjoy the content. -TFS
Great video....thanks so much for walking us through that. Theoretically I knew how to do that, but have never actually done it. So much easier once you have seen it done by someone else . Thanks again!! DiamondEYZ
Just a🎉there is a clearance “IFR to VFR on top”, the converse also exists, namely, IFR to VFR underneath”. If you haven’t already taken advantage of it, it might come in handy someday. Take care,
@@TheFlyingSalesman simply ask a controller for an IFR descent through the clouds when you have a cloud deck beneath you. If the controller is reasonably sure, you will break out above his or her MSA, IT CAN BE DONE.

Request: No offense but regarding camera angles, it would be more interesting to see your Instrument panel on IFR Approaches than simply seeing your profile from IAF to Final Approach. Please also keep the short 2nd Cam Clips of front view over engine cowling too. Thank you.
Great video with IFR procedures. Only tweak I would offer is the music at the takeoff sequence was a bit loud and distracting. Occasionally we hear music for a video intro title sequence, but I feel it doesn't add anything during the body of the video.
I bet you never thought you'd hear this "a little less right rudder". Sorry couldn't help myself. On a serious note file on the ground (ipad) but leave it in filed status, when you hit your area for IFR, pick it up with a current location. Works so much better and way faster since its already holding in the system.
@@Twizlair great tip! I will remember that. The intent of this is for those times when you get caught off guard. I like your plan though, I can see multiple scenarios where it can be used.
Just a question… What gives you those callouts in the air? Are you getting them from Foreflight? I use Garmin Pilot and I don’t have that feature ( runway callouts etc.. where you always say thank you Glady)
I pay for my own brakes. If I want to use the ENTIRE runway to land... I'm using the ENTIRE runway to land! Great video as always!
