The Story of Trouble with Lawrence Todd

I'm Lawrence, a 27 year old in the UK. Follow me as I restore my Porsche 356 aka. Trouble.
Back in 2019 I roped my sister into buying a Porsche 356 with me.
After being told by industry experts that the car would never see the road again, she was appropriately named Trouble. I buried her in the garage to be forgotten about. It took me a while to build up the courage but I realised I didn't want to face my sister loosing all her money. This left me with one option...to fix Trouble.
At the end of 2023 thats what I started doing and "The Story of Trouble" was born.

Is there ever such thing as a "quick 5 minute job"?
When looking at Trouble (my Porsche 356) in the garage and assessing everything I had to take offer her, I never saw the wing mirrors as a major task. How wrong I was.

I found a barn find classic Porsche 356 B Super 90 from 1962. It looked complete and I thought it wouldn’t take much to get it back on the road so I persuaded my sister to buy it with me. Garage-sales, Estate sales, Facebook Marketplace are all amazing for finding cheap auto-working tools and equipment! Congrats on finding the engine stand 🙌🏾 …and finally getting the side-view mirrors off! 😅. When you reattach them later on, are you considering them on the fenders up front? Or back to their traditional spot? ⚡️

My 356 had so much Bondo (filler) in places, including places it was absolutely unnecessary, they must have had a sale on it…but 1, get 5 free. I found if you heat it up a bit with a propane torch, it will scrape off like butter.
Nooo 😭 whoever owned Trouble before me must have gone to the same store, used one of the cans then given your guy the rest! Her nose has had its fair few knocks…so many I’ve bought a new clip 🙃 Thank you for the tip!
The only "easy" way to get rid of filler is heating until it gets black ish and then scraping it

All this work and the wheels, shocks, transmission tunnel and the headliner STILL need to come out before sand- blasting! 😅 I’m only watching on my sofa and I’m exhausted! You have the patience of a saint haha. I just wanna see her back to brand new again lol 😩

Yes it is 😂 I didn’t realise how noisy it was till I watched it all back 🙃 She was a life saver helping scrape all the old under seal off 🙌🏼 Thank you!
You need to build yourself a rotisserie to work on the bottom of the 356as you have a lot of welding to do down on the bottom metal. I felt like a cancer surgeon when I started removing the rusty panels.
When oh when will the body work start?!?!
Good for you young man and sister! Another option, is to fix the rust, clear coat the patina and leave the body alone. Fix up the mechanical and then not worry about driving it - door dings, rock chips, etc. cheers!
Thank you! I would have loved to have done this but the only real way to see how bad the rust was, was to take her completely back to bare metal removing all her paint and under seal. It was just as well we did as there were places that looked solid which definitely weren’t 😳 I will be keeping lots of her mechanical patina though 🙌🏼

I did this on mine not too long ago. Still have a little bit of the firewall to do but also ran into the same issues with heating it up in a garage space. Looking forward to seeing if you decided to acid dip or media blast body before starting on metal work moving forward :)
I’m literally counting the days until we get to see the full body sand blasted and down to bare metal! I can wait to see how much of the original remains and what the body work will begin from! It’s like beginning from an almost blank canvas once more 🙌🏾 ⚡️

Hello, Lawrence! I love your Porsche! The foot operated switch is for your headlights. One click is high beams, another for low beams. It's the same switch that most European manufacturers relocated to the turn signal stalk in the later 60s'. Buy the Robert Bentley factory manuals on your Porsche for information as well as restoration. It's a worthy investment.

I wouldn’t say I really wanted to but unfortunately to make her structural again and to do it properly it was just part of the process 😭 I’ll be keeping her patina with the rest of her “hardware” 🙌🏼

So until I can get the money together, I figured I might as well learn as much as I can through osmosis. I find stuff like this fascinating. Simple enough for the novice mechanic, yet complicated enough to be in awe of!
I want to follow this story so much but the portrait content is difficult. Appreciate your doing it for reels/insta. But PLEASE just rotate your phone. Put it on 0.5 and then use the upload app to cut it back to portrait and keep all the bits in you want for Insta. Right now your posting short form format content on a long form platform. Whereas with the above, you could literally do both with the same clips.

I saw you ask for video recommendations! I, sure you’ve already heard about Rod Emory… but on TH-cam I recommend a channel, “Jerod Helt”. He has a yellow 356 that he brought back to life and it’s a great watch. And also; “Greasy Fingers”. He does great Porsche work. Lots of rust repair and troubleshooting, he’s very knowledgeable!

That little nest - We call them mud dobbers, there are little mumified bugs in there. They look like wasps but they are a lot less aggressive.
“Mud dobbers”, that is great! Hopefully they were long gone by the time I got to them, if not they’re in the bin now 😬👀

It happens. 63' Healey was how i learned. Back yourself with a quality HI-FI system in the garage. Everything will flow with ease thereafter.

FYI, the motor panel release pull cable knob is behind the driver’s seat on the side wall. You can see it on the right as you tilt the front seat back forward. Best of luck restoring. Can’t wait to see the process and you two driving. Cheers!!
The pull knob would pull but the panel wouldn’t release 😭 I eventually managed to reach up into the engine bay and open the lid manually 🙌🏼 Thank you! I’m so excited for the day we can drive her out the garage 🔥

I would guess that is an electric fuel switch for a pump to prime the carbs.
This is a pretty good guess! I've read that lots of people put inline fuel pumps in to prime the system so that they don't drain their 6v battery cranking the engine to get fuel pressure. This is a mod I'm thinking of doing.
Great video your lucky to have your family help. 30 years ago my stepfather resurrected a 1960 356b which I got to witness. I'm very interested in this build because I own a 62 356b just like yours that needs to be restored. Thank you for video. Have you seen porsche made by hand video made by porsche in 1960 its a great inspirational video.

I have a 62 also not restored yet. It's not as rusted as yours. Me and My dad restored a 1960 356b so I have some knowledge about this process. My suggestion to you is binge watch 356 a and b on youtube to learn restoration process. Good luck and I'll be watching and commenting to be helpful thanks for your time.
Love this! I can't get enough of watching 356 videos on TH-cam although a lot of the ones where they're driving them makes me want to drive Trouble. Do you have any suggestions of good ones to watch just in case I haven't already come across them myself?
