Here's the thing, I wouldn't call hostel a particularly gorey film, it has as much gore as like a Friday the thirteenth or other 80s slasher, enough to deliver the idea to the viewer, but what gives Hostel it's reputation is the brutality and realism it's delivered with. Like josh's torture scene, its sad because Josh didn't do nothing to deserve it, its brutal cause this man just walks in, picks up a drill and just goes at him without saying a word all while he's realistically pleading, but what I notice about it is there isn't much gore, just the drill going in for a second then his achilies snap, the spectacle in that scene isn't the gore, it's the horror of watching this young innocent boy beg for his life while he's not even aware there's no chance of escape. And for that, hostel is an amazing movie in my eyes, plus the best part of the movie is paxton killing Edward saladhands the same way he killed his friend, 100% deserved.

What is unintentionally hilarious is an amateur trying to “react” to a film he clearly can’t really grasp. I am not even going to mention the other hilarious bit, the best of all possible worlds technology mentality on display without the irony. Oh, I did mention it. Anyway, go read Wood’s book on Hitch and this film, Chabrol and Rohmer’s book and this film, and Paglia’s monograph on the film, scholars all who well explore the film and the various explanations for what is happening in it (Hitch actually provides several explanations in the film). Perhaps they will help; perhaps not. Finally, Hitch loved thrillers and this is a thriller, an existentialist thriller with perhaps religious dimensions, not a horror film

Apparently the casting team wasn't sure about casting Sissy Spacek as Carrie. They thought she was "too pretty" to be her. The book says she looks good on prom night and that she's not really that ugly despite not knowing how to make the best of herself. I'm glad they cast Sissy in the end, even if she had to put Vaseline in her hair to make it look more matted.

The backgrounds are likely painted muslin, aka a "cyclorama." The muslin can be backlit for a variety of effects.

Man, Bert Lahr just KILLS IT as the Cowardly Lion, and Ray Bolger's Scare-crow...wow.! Along with Margaret Hamilton as the witch, they stole the show.

This principal was really good in many ways. But I don’t like the way he tried to fire those 2 teachers for no reason. They were going their jobs and their argument with him was justified.

They didn’t spray paint the horses with paint, it was like a Jell-O. Something that wouldn’t hurt them, but they couldn’t get the horses to stop trying to lick it off.

Everyone in the USA over a certain age remembers watching this on its single annual showing repeatedly over the years. The song lyrics as well as a lot of the dialogue are permanently implanted in our brains: “Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!”, “Toto too!”, “Because, because, because, because, because…”’, “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore…”, “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!”, etc. It’s hard to believe how many people DON’T know any of this - but a long time has passed.

When the witch got shocked reaching for Dorothy's ruby slippers, Dorothy should have just started kickshocking her to a greasy puddle.

Most of the actors likely had live stage experience, and the whole production like went full forward, not afraid of "over-acting" or over-doing it. It is a "fantasy movie" the same way "Harry Potter" was. We accept the story as it is being told, like 'Princess Bride".

8:17 hey, a lot of Disney villains have the best songs in their movies. My favorite villain from the old animated Disney classic movies is judge Claude frollo from the hunchback of notre dame. Many Disney movies, the villain just wants power or revenge and it gets rather boring at times. But frollo is truely evil is so many ways and the most evil and most hated villain in animated Disney movies. And he is more of a villain than any of the others. Gaston is just a lustful rich jerk who’s full of himself but he’s not really a villain. But Gaston definitely does a great job in the movie for sure

In this gotta have it right now society, and movies dumbed down for the masses, younger gens aren't used to character development, especially the character arc of several characters....but that gets you personally invested in the characters, instead of just visual entertainment of shallow instant payoff is all movies are now....require ZERO intellect or investment, just visual to watch, lol.
