Scary Movie is not a horror. Its a straight up comedy. This is a true horror/comedy tho. Or maybe I just feel that way because this actually manages to be somewhat scary sometimes!

I get the feeling whoever told you that this movie was similar to Scary Movie, either never saw this movie or never saw Scary Movie, or both. Ive never heard of these two movies being compared to each other in any way whatsoever. Perhaps the person who told you this was thinking of the movie Scream (which was the movie that Scary Movie parodied) instead? At least that would be a more fitting comparison in terms of being meta. It was just odd every time you brought it up.

Cabin in the Woods is actually one big 4th wall break. The Ancient Gods that require sacrifices are us. The viewers. So producers try to make scary movies to entertain us. And we expect a similar formula every time: There's some cabin in the woods where some stupid teenagers that die in ridiculous ways and in the end the naïve little virgin is the one to survive. Or we watch a japanese horror and expect there to be child ghosts etc. Except we become more and more desensitized to the movies so we demand more to be satisfied. And if we don't get the sacrifice we crave then we "destroy the world" = Turn off the movie.

If you think about it, the "ancient one's" are supposed to be us as the viewer of horror movies since we sometimes get mad when someone else breaks the formula of something we are used to
Yeah, there's a lot of Millennial "fan privilege" creeping about this movie--The metaphor that Horror is the cliche'-factory "same thing" over and over, because it's made by Corrupt Boomer Adults to "harvest" gullible teenagers (and their money).
This was made before the explosion of bad generic made-for-digital Shudder horror movies in the 10's, where fans have no one to blame for assembly-line Possessed House, Resurrected Ghost and Found-Footage Exorcism horror but themselves.
A movie that takes that concept but does it much better is “Resolution” it takes the concept of the viewer actually manipulated and preying on the characters much more seriously.

Comparing Scary Movie to Cabin in the Woods is like comparing Disaster Movie with Airplane!

This movie was made in 2009 but it wasn't released until 2011 when MGM was filing for bankruptcy.
If you liked this movie, you should check out Tucker and Dale Vs Evil, it's the same style (a horror movie making fun of horror movies) but it's more specific to the backwoods serial killer sub-genre
I recommend taking a look at wiki's for it to see all of the horror references. I've rewatched it several times and still miss some.

This is definitely one my favourite horror movies. And yes, it makes fun of the tropes, and yes, it could be the origin of every other horror movie. Plus, I do love that you have that ethical dilemma at the end, what do you do? Do you save the world and sacrifice your friend? Is the world even worth saving?
Whoever told you that this was like scary movie was way wrong lol. They're nothing alike. The only similarity between those two movies are that they are influenced by horror movies. When you started mentioning scary movie I got really confused lol. I'm glad you saw this movie though. It's one of my favorite horror movies.

Scary Movie is a parody of horror films. The Cabin In The Woods is a horror movie paying tributes to past and other horror films. Where Scary Movie can go off the deep end and still be a fun watch; however, The Cabin In The Woods stays within the confines of its world if they were to make a sequel.
Remember that things have been almost going wrong and failing the whole movie? There's an idea that Marty's screwing around with the elevator set up a systemic failure. So that, instead of purging the zoo and killing all the monsters, Marty's futzing with it caused a short that just set them all loose in the hallway.

Each monster is from a different Horror movie. One is a reference to the Reainamator. The Merman is a reference to the Black Lagoon Creature.

Surprisingly as someone who went on a road trip through a lot of middle of nowhere. There’s more service stations than you’d expect. That aren’t this creepy.

I gotta say, I usually love your reactions. But why all of the cartoony editing, all of a sudden? This is a terrific, thoughtful, very well-written movie, and I got the feeling you just wanted to make a joke out of everything. I haven’t gotten to the end of your reaction yet while I’m writing this, but I get the strong sense that you really didn’t enjoy this one...and you went into it vowing not to like it.
It's obvious this dude got baked as fuck while his parents were away, hence his preoccupation with Scary Movie and bong-sabres. He also went into this movie with a preconceived notion that it was a comedy, and his buzz was not willing to let it go. I've seen a few other reactions from this fellow, and they're usually okay. This one I didn't finish, however, because it was juvenile and disrespectful. Too bad.
I understand your thoughts and I appreciate the feedback!! I honestly enjoyed the movie really well!! I just purchased a new pc and this was the very first thing I edited on it and with a newer software to edit on, I was just having some fun with the edits but I apologize for some of the silly tone.

I agree, I like Scary Movie but as far as spoofs go, I think Airplane! is a lot funnier.
You should check out a movie from 2015 called 'Final Girls'. It pokes fun at slasher films, especially Friday the 13th and Jason. It has it's own story and all but it's fun movie. The set up is basically a group of young 20 year olds who end up getting sucked up into the movie they're watching and try to figure out how to get out of it before getting caught by the killer. The characters within the slasher movie follow the usual cliche characters, while the real people have to go along with what the movie wants them to do.
Love the new head-on setup. Not as cozy as you sitting at the foot of your bed with Spongebob in prominent focus, but def more professional. BTW, my mom let me watch the first Scary Movie at way too young an age and it certainly made an impression on me

Fun fact, near the start of the movie there was a reference to the incident of 98, where the chem department messed up while Japanese got it done. The Incident is referring to The Faculty where none of the characters died and the monster was defeated from, of course, chemicals, and why the Japanese succeeded was with the release of The Ring (Original Japanese version)

The "cult" in this case is Hollywood. The old gods is the audience who gets upset if the tropes are not followed. This movie is legit
I mean, comparing this to the Scary Movie franchise doesn't even really make sense imo, cause those are parodies while this is a satire, which while they can be related, are really very different things. For one thing, a satire isn't necessarily supposed to be "funny" in the strictest sense, it's supposed to make you think about things. Scary Movie is parody making fun of popular horror films, Cabin in the Woods is a satire deconstructing the very nature of the horror genre in western film culture.
Not a bong saber, been used in Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back. The button would be for emergencies, I mean if u didn't have it the creatures are probably hard to collect, in order to save them.

When this movie came out I actually hated it due to that ending, however after doing some reading up on its purpose it's actually become one of my favorite horror movies of the last decade. Kind of want to go back and smack my 20 year old self. Oh, and if you could maybe you could react to the Love Bug/Herbie series if you haven't seen them?. I personally find them very fun movies.
I famously hate new horror except for this and Saw. Hilarious! And I laughed at “The Exorcist” tv version. I was like 7, so..

Scary movie is a goofy parody of horror movies. This simply pays homage to them. I wouldn't even call this a comedy. More like sci-fi horror with comedic elements.
Great reaction (as usual).....but I'm not sure why anyone compared this with Scary Movie (an all out spoof of Scream)....Scream is closer to this film, in that it was somewhat self aware and poking fun of the horror tropes it was using (but not near as good or as clever as this film).
Scary Movie is closer to Airplane or Space Balls or Dracula: Dead And Loving It....horror just happened to be the genre that film was spoofing.

The allegations regarding his inappropriate behavior on Buffy and Angel are pretty recent (like within the last 2 weeks).

Cabin in the woods and scary movie have no relation what so ever. Scary movie is purely a comedy with basically no violence at all, cabin in the woods is a horror/comedy.. completely different.

Yes, I was sick of the early-00's post-Ring/Grudge "J-horror remake" craze too, but that scene of the office's "Japanese branch" who can't terrorize little Tokyo school children with Sadako anymore was so snarkily privileged-fanboy hostile, it bordered on racist.
