My solution: Statues in Motion created this song. But... this is not the version that we are listening to. Sometime in 1982-1983, Statues in Motion either recorded this to tape, or experimented with it. However, they never made a proper recording or release. This is why some of the band members vaguely remember playing/recording it. Move ahead to 1984, Statues in Motion disbanded. Former member (and lead singer) Alvin Dean moves on to other projects, but he remembers this song and wants to try it again. He get's together with some musican friends, possibly hires a studio musician for the guitar, and records THIS versio with less electronics, more guitar and.... using the DX7, which is in vogue. He sends the recording to some DJ who recognized the singer's name and gave it airplay. Stardom does not ensue. Move ahead to 1985 or later, and Alvin Dean has left Greece/Europe, left the music industry, possibly heading to South Africa. He dissapears and probably died. PS I subsequently found that another writer has the same conclusion: @johngarcia1340 has suggested that the friends who worked with Alvin Dean on this recording are "Forward Music Quintet (which included the Drummer and friend of Alvin's from his former group, Homicide, who was nicknamed 'Von Claus', and Billy Knight's former band Parthenogenesis's Bass Player, as well.) Additionally, Greek Guitarist and solo artist Yannis Beltekis recently released a small demo sample from a recording session he and Alvin had in 1984, with DX7 Syntheziser sounds that are exactly eerily similar to Forward Music Quintet's 1985 Album." Like the wind, you came here running. Take the consequence of living. There's no space, there's no tomororrow. There's no sense communicating. Check it in, Check it out, but the sun goes down outside. Paranoid anyway, in the subway of your mind. Like the wind, You're born in summer. Let a smile be your companion. There's no place, and there's no sorrow, in the young and restless dreamer. Check it in, check it out, or the sun will never shine. Paranoid anyway, in the subway of your mind. BRIDGE Check it in, check it out, but the sun will never shine. Paranoid anyway, in the subway of your mind. Check it in, check it out, its the summer blues. Tear it in, tear it out, cause I'm reading you.

Great video! I was just talking to my cousin who is a massive Primus fan about how much I think they're influenced by The Residents and this popped up in my recommended. I like the personal anecdote you use to frame it all. What's up with the weird audio cuts though? Am I supposed to loop the video a certain way to get a secret message? Just kidding I know it's probably those S and T sounds.

The premise is laughable. The music is enterally forgettable. It sounds like they are chasing after the Beatles. My main points: Compared to the elegant engineering/production of the George Martin Apple team, this LP is clumsy. The backing vocals are predictable and old fashioned. The 'sounds' that Wilson employ are cringe at best. It almost sounds like a comedy LP. The only good song is Good Vibrations, which was a song that was written and half-way completed during the Pet Sounds LP. The main point: Imagine the week that Sgt. Pepper was first released in 1967. Every person with ears was in possession of the LP, every person was sitting attentively at their record player in awe of the revolutionary songs and sounds on that disc. Sgt. Pepper sounded modern and cutting edge. Everyone new each song by heart. I listened to the entire Smile LP and I am seriously depressed by the rambling meanderings of each uninspired song.

Great video! Easily the best video telling the story of this song! The illustrations helped a lot! (Kudos to the artist!) I like your theory about the origin being East Germany. I read a post on Reddit where someone speculated that the lyrics might refer to someone from behind the Iron Curtain trying to escape to the West. I think the investigation into this song might be helped if a Linguist fluent in European languages analyzed the lyrics. The feeling one gets from the song is that singer/songwriter is very weak with respect to his use of English. My guess is that some of the awkward phrases were literally translated from what's correct in the songwriter's mother language to English. Finding out what the songwriter's mother tongue would certainly help narrow things down.

I have to disagree about Mike Love. He contributed a lot. His voice was an integral part of their sound. And he did contribute lyrically to songs, such as Good Vibrations. He was understandably upset when Brian had Parks be the lyricist for songs for a while after the aforementioned tune, especially when it wasn't working out. Much of Park's lyrics were too abstract for the average listener.Love's lyrics were successful and comprehended by the public, and he wanted to stick with the themes that made the Beach Boys popular in the first place. One has to consider the business side of things, and Smile is much less commercial than their previous records. This is what's somewhat lacking in your video. Brian did go off the deep end. He really needed somebody like George Martin to bring him back to Earth. Also, I'm not a huge B. Boys fan, though I have good understanding of the group; There are many songs in their catalog I like, but it's usually from their early stuff. Personally I like rawer music more. You claim that Love is too stiff and "conservative," and it's fine to have artful ideas for a project, but there is also the bread and butter side which needed consideration by Brian because he went far off the rails to a point of no return on Smile. Musical experimentation is good, but there has to be a balance. The Beach Boys later returned to some of their older themes and format on later albums to continue to make a living in the music industry.

One key fact you don't note (at least, as of 3m in) is the fact that it may not have been recorded off NDR, according to Professor of Rock. While that was the most likely source, it is not a certainty. Darius occasionally recorded off of other available sources at that time.

Now I see 17 years later that is much better that I never solved it as it created a very big community of people from all around the world. Much better than solving it as it would soon fade away among those small group of people that were interested in it at the time as it happened unfortunately with many unknown songs that I solved back then, and so now I regret as those solved mystery songs will never get an attention they deserved such as this one.

I did not know of this mysterious Internet song (supposedly) titled Like the Wind until just yesterday (June 18, 2024), and I think that is amazing because I have been surfing the Internet as a hobby every day since I got my first PC in January, 2001. I like the song and think it's catchy, so good job to those that wrote it and performed/recorded it. In my opinion, with my personal experience with rock music since I started paying attention to it on the radio around 1976, this song sounds like something from 1979-1980. Not trying to say I think it was recorded sometime from 1979-1980, but that's what it sounds like to me if I was asked to guess. To me, the singer sounds like somebody who does not actually speak English but is attempting to copy how those words sound when sung in English. Maybe a member of the band knew enough English to sing it in English and the band's singer simply tried to imitate how those words were pronounced.

Quick question on your point against neely. . . . Did either you or ragusa specifically tell needy he is wrong? Provide resume/notes? And why would you dig past the answer you were looking for when the answer you received is that he's a journalist? That is a ridiculous argument considering that you found the problem, and that significantly more research was needed. Sure, confirmation bias, but he looked before he spoke in an effort to know. He can't fix what he doesn't know

I've always heard "Front Two-Four-Two." The only time I've ever, ever heard "Two fourty-Two" is when they were very briefly mentioned on Beverly Hills 90120. But anyway, in America, these bands were on college radio, and at alternative dance clubs, you'd hear them in the same places you'd hear the Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Xymox, etc. Later examples of the genre could be seen in Hate Dept., Spahn Ranch, Cubanate, and 16 volt in the 90s, and after that, bands like Covenant and VNV Nation in the 2000s.
