Ariel Pink is the greatest indie musician of the last 20 years in my opinion. He influenced and created the entire scene of hypnagogic pop, and brought back certain retro sounds to indie music that had long been thought of as discarded. Mac Demarco, Clairo, Steve Lacy, Joji, Foxygen, Connan Mockasin, Neon Indian, Washed Out All these people and many others in indie, alt music, and pop can trace their sound back to Ariel's singular sound. However following the 2020 election Ariel found himself on the wrong side of a vicious cancellation. The reason? His attendance of Donald Trump's inciting rally that preceded the capitol attack of January 6th. While Ariel himself was not at the siege, the fallout for his career was instantaneous. In this video we take a look at his immortal musical legacy, as well as the consequences of his newly acquired right-wing politics, the limits of cancel culture, and the importance of staying vigilant to internet algorithm manipulation.

Hey all so like a year later thought I’d pin this comment. So when I made this video I was sort of jus figuring out my politics (20s is a bit late I know but forgive me) anyway I would say I’ve had a bit of political evolution since then and would consider myself much more of a moderate/centrist than I was then. Still maintain my criticisms in here of the MAGA movement, but I have recently been woken up to the very real extremism on the political left, so if I were to remake this video I would probably mention that a bit more but that’s life I guess

I’m 53, raised Jewish, and love Ariel Pinks music. Based on how todays ‘left wing’ people behave and the policies they endorse, for all intents and purposes, today’s left are right wing extremists as leftists describe ‘evil right wing’ people. I mostly blame media corporations for this manipulation, but yeah, you guys really need to find principles beyond popular politics and stick to them. I’d like to remind all you self described leftists that Mussolini, Adolf, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, David Ben Gurion, FDR were all leftists. Everyone needs to calm tf down. Your conservative uncle isn’t a nazi and you, as a leftist, are not a genocidal communist. Get a grip. Ariel is 1000% right about where the world is headed - a global fascist dictatorship maintained by companionless technology.

I personally loved dystopian cautionary stories and movies. I feel like I’m now living in one. When I was a self described liberal what passes for “liberal” now would never fly - your generation has been fooled into being the exact thing they think they’re fighting. His gender transgression, innovative music, creativity, forward-thinking innovation and so on that drew you to him in the first place have the same source as his contrarian politics. He doesn't like being confined and he loves to stick it to the man. In there there's also some genuine Ariel beliefs that you may or may not agree with but most of it is just a reaction to the shrink wrap put on people's minds with the tightening grip of culture wars and whatnot. One side or the other, it is getting harder to just be a person given the omnipresence and and expectations tied to this political warfare that we're all supposed to engage in.
You know it yourself, you don't have to give up on Ariel over this. Not because he is right with what he says, but because it's not coming from a place of hate but a place of rebellion. If Trump was the popular establishment figure in the media, maybe this video would be about how disappointed OP is about Ariel opposing him so vehemently. That's what I'm trying to say. Not to make excuses for some of the more outlandish things he says, but to underline that his motivations are those of a mid 00s liberal, ultimately.

the main thing I've listened to was Pom Pom, and it was one of my favorite albums in recent years. I would still listen to it, tho not as often. But it did help influence the kinda music i got into, whether its people in a similar genre, or those who inspired him.
It's hard sometimes to seperate art from the artist, Kanye especially cause he's in the genre where you have to put a lot of yourself to it. Feels too coincidental the kinda mindset he has now was there all along in his early music.
I remember there was a tweet around the same time he got ridiculed for his rightwing views, responding to Fantano's on how the right wing is shit at making music, claim high and mighty that hes an example of the right making good music. Couldn't roll my eyes further if i tried.
You already mentioned that this recent hit wasn't the first time he faced controversy, i would hope that he'll see to his senses, but i'm not gonna hold my breath.

....wait wait wait. I did NOT know Worn Copy was the first released album. Here's my obligatory APHG coming of age story: It was the "Chillwave Summer" - 2009. Me and my friend Magic were both about 14 & found "House Arrest" first and "FF/Scared Famous" second. (we were lucky to find the original FF/SF first haha) - we were Animal Collective fans, but we were mainly Electronic kids, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, u-ziq, Squarepusher, etc and of course Neon Indian and the then very new Washed Out record. Anyway, we somehow found House Arrest and i'll never forget the first time I heard it.
"Interesting Results" was my first that clicked. Well. "Hardcore Pops are Fun" was my first first, but it didn't quite click until I had context to what my little teenage ass was hearing for the first time. We both were under the impression it was some outsider pop from the 60's. And thus, we were introduced to Hypnagogic pop. But at that time - that term did not exist as a genre so we had absolutely no idea what to even conceptualize it as at the time. Just Lo-fi Psychedelic pop music.
When we found it was recorded in 2002-ish we almost shit ourselves in music nerd glee. We didn't even KNOW IT WAS POSSIBLE to make music sound 30 years old in the way that he did. Baked in a Trans-AM windshield for a decade... We proceeded to find and catalogue every bootleg we could get our hands on: DUH, Yas Dudette, THE CLASSICS!
I dont give a rats ass about his politics man, Ariel has played a major role along with so many others in making me and soooo many other weird ass people- the musician, artist, goofball, dumbass I am today. So I just have one question for all of you.
Are you gonna look after my boys?

I also have done tech support for major corporations and I wonder if these "indie" people realize how much of what they say echoes exactly what is said in corporate boardrooms these days, down to every last buzzword and opinion. Everything political in America is a L.A.R.P.

Appreciate you mentioning historical curiosity as a reason to observe politics without necessarily believing or valuing the politics
It is also funny partially because they think they’re fighting the establishment both sides(as inaccurate as that binary devision is)
      What’s the difference between L.A.R.P & Imitation?
Because I agree but also don’t expect people to be original
It much just be a sociological GP(general principle)

LOL that’s because corporations want to act “woke” and talk about identity politics because it keeps people away from class issues. It keeps the people separated while also appealing to clueless liberals who actually buy into their actions. They killed blm because they co-opted it. That’s what they’ve been doing for years. It defangs them and then they can control the movement. Just give people symbolic victories and shit. Thats enough to appease the libs, the brainwashed and the willfully ignorant. The well informed people who are really into politics and want shit to get better for themselves and everyone else understand this shit. I doubt the people in these boardrooms are talking about destroying capitalism. They say that shit because it sells and they want to fit in and feel good about themselves without doing anything. Those people represent the libs. The left starts at social democracy (arguably) but the rest of the left is explicitly anti capitalist and consists of socialists, Marxists, anarchists, communists, and other anti capitalist ideologues. It should also be said that what we consider left in America wouldn’t be considered left anywhere else in the world besides maybe the UK. None of our politicians in the US would (with the exception of maybe one or two people at most) be considered left wing anywhere else because the Overton window has been moved so far to the right. So the idea of actual leftists being all about corporations and corporations being all about the radical left is an absolute joke. But to be fair the “BLM”™️ movement (which is very different from the general movement of militant anti racism and antifascism) is dead. The anti police brutality movement needs to be completely rebranded and reorganized in a way where it actually has teeth and gets real results that makes everyone’s lives better

@@gamestopholdmusic There are 3 main schools of western thought. The greek/modernist rational view point, the latin/abrahamic religeous view point and the esoteric/subjectivist/gnostic view point. The christian view point forced the latter underground where it grew and spread with intellectual elite due to it's exclusive and romantic nature. These people subverted and infiltrated the education and media centers of the western world so they were able to mold the minds of the elite. This way of thinking is attractive to people dissatisfied with reality or "social constructions" due to them not having strong axioms about reality they are very malleable by things like media and school. Whether you agree or disagree with the philosophy is another question but it runs in exact contrast with the boomer con "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality that a guy like Ariel Pink has.

Great video. I can think of no other artist of the modern era deserving of a long form analysis.
Collage rock is a great way to describe ariel’s stuff, especially as he moved into his higher fidelity stuff. One of the many things I find interesting about his songwriting is his ability to perfectly combine seemingly unrelated things. If you listen to demos you find out that many of these were actually separate songs/ideas that Ariel pieced together. I would call it seamless, but that doesn’t feel right to me. Often the stitches and transitions between the pieces are just as compelling and emotionally moving as the segments of music themselves.

All this cope in here. Y’all are allowed to be upset, but just remember.. you’re only upset because Ariel is top of the line. His perspective/opinion wouldn’t bother you if you didn’t respect his mind enough to know he’s carrying the heavy weight you’re too weak to carry yourselves. Be mad at the heavy weight of the truth, be mad at your own weakness under the weight of his words, but eventually you’re going to learn to lift heavy truth like Ariel. Cope harder.. then catch up with the rest of us.

Dude I was at that Middle East show too! I don't know if you remember, but prior to the release of Before Today, tied up in Ariel's mysterious persona was a reputation for having like, the worst live show imaginable. Pitchfork fucking haaaaated him at the time, which made me much more curious in checking him out. And I remember listening to BT over and over to get hyped for the show, thinking that it may be this fun, weird trainwreck. I walked out thinking it was probably the best live show I had seen so far. Like I still remember him absolutely belting out Fright Night and Round and Round with more gusto than everyone in the crowd.
Also, I got there early enough to see him just milling around, hunched over, shorter than me. I remember him setting up, trying to free a cable off of his mic stand, but doing it in this really strange, haphazard way. It's hard to describe, but something about the way he was doing it made me be like, 'damn he's just some weird little guy like me' lol.

Ariel is the one true artist and philosopher like the bold pillars of history I've always hoped to find in my own era...willing to risk it all just to prove a point and perhaps inspire a new school of thought. This was well-done but disappointed it had to end by putting him in a neat box of alt-right... Even troll or surrealist is too much of a box. As his friend I still can't believe how easily misconstrued he is. Like thinking most states are actually red.. Doesn't mean he thinks that's a good thing!! I think every Jewish artist worth knowing has made art about nazis/the Holocaust.. All the best art has always been shrouded in mystery because it can be interpreted in so many different ways. He's a transmitter.. a lightning pole.. who does not judge the transmission. How else could you imagine his music is made? I highly rec the TH-cam series made on him called 'Dedicated to Boris Karloff' because it was made by another strange and mystifying artist who gets the scope of meaning in a mind like this. Also rec to stay tuned to our channel cuz were going on tour w/ him & i'm making the video for 'i wanna be a girl' ^.^ !!!!

Do you think it was right for his label to drop him 2 days later over text, or at all for that matter? Does he deserve to not be able to support himself and his family with his music career anymore? Does he deserve to not be able to play live shows or tour, which is the real money maker for artists? These are all honest questions. Should we demand that for him to have his music career back that he has to disavow his personal beliefs? No matter how misguided some people may think they are? I’m truly curious. @--REGULAR--REGULAR 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@MindlessTurtle The trump rally can't compare to blm rallies only because the intention behind the trump rally was to never be peaceful in the first place. The rally in jan 6. was to deny the defeat in the election, refuse to concede, and lie about electoral fraud which made his supporters act violently without zero evidence or facts of those claims being the absolute truth. So if you showed up to that rally on that day your intention wasn't to be peaceful it was to act on idiotic, ignorant, immature and incriminating claims. The night Trump lost the election he made it clear that the election was rigged without proof, even after the count of votes were done state to state. Also, the rallies organized by blm only become violent when the police make barricades in military gear to try to stop the peaceful protest. There's a reason why the kkk and alt right groups rallies never turn violent, unless anifa and far left groups show up to comfort them but other than that the police themselves don't make barricades and show up in military gear to try and stop them from "protesting" peacefully. Blm protest are rooted in the mistreatment and discrimination of citizens by police and proven with evidence and facts but justice still not being served to the abused or dead citizens. Its not the same.
