Eloise Laws - I'd Do It All Again
Eloise Laws was the fourth of eight children born to Miola Luverta Donahue and Hubert Laws. Theirs was a musical family with siblings that included flautist brother Hubert, saxophonist Ronnie and vocalist Debra.
She is, in my view, yet another under appreciated vocal talent whose catalog of work contains several gems worthy of recognition.
It didn't need much persuading for the renowned Tamla production and song-writing trio, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland, Jr - more popularly referred to as Holland-Dozier-Holland - to sign her to their new record label, Music Merchant. The trio had achieved spectacular success with their earlier launched Invictus Records when Freda Payne topped the UK bestsellers with "Band of Gold", and Chairman of the Board occupied third spot in the same chart with "Give Me Just A Little More Time", and were clearly hoping Eloise would achieve similar success on Music Merchant. After two releases in 1972/73 for that label, she switched to Invictus in 1975, remaining with them until 1977, followed by spells with ABC, Liberty and Capitol.
Signed to Columbia Records in 1968, Eloise Laws recorded two singles for the label, the first of which caused two of the world's leading popular female recording artists to sit up and take notice. The first of these Columbia releases featured Eloise's treatment of the 1959 Phil Spector pop classic "To Know Him Is To Love Him", recorded by him together with Marshall Lieb and, handling lead vocals, Annette Kleinbard, later to become better known as Carol Connors. One of my favourite early teen hits from way back in 1959, the recording also featured legendary drummer Sandy Nelson, topped the U.S. Billboard charts for three weeks and sold close on three million copies. [Eloise's version is available on this TH-cam channel at th-cam.com/video/2z4b02CVVho/w-d-xo.html]
More noteworthy, however, is Eloise's recording of Leon Carr and Richard Ahlert's song "I'd Do It All Again", with which "To Know Him Is To Love Him" was released on New Year's Eve that year. It sufficiently impressed multi Grammy Award-winning song stylist Vikki Carr to include her outstanding treatment on her 'Superstar' album two years later, and followed by a Shirley Bassey styling later that year.
I really like Eloise's 1968 original which I happily include in my collection without a need or wish to compare to those by Vikki, which I freely admit to being my favourite of these three recordings, or Dame Shirley's treatment.

It is 65 years since I was "introduced" to the guitar skills of Vic Flick during his days as a member of the John Barry Seven. The group was, quite simply, a development ground for incredible super-talented individuals. Within just three years Vic would achieve deserved worldwide acclaim for his guitar riff on the 'James Bond Theme'; leader John Barry win a Best Song Oscar for "Born Free", and ...

The title song from the 30-minute short movie "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize" was a monster global hit for Engelbert Humperdinck in 1968, which in turn led to it being recorded by well over a hundred major recording artists around the world. The film is a charming tale of a young cyclist, Steve (played by Anthony May) who falls in love with the poster of a fashion model named Julie (Judy Huxtable)...

A longtime admirer of Dame Shirley Bassey, I love the quote from Britain's premier songwriter, composer, arranger, conductor and pianist, Les Reed OBE regarding his song, "Does Anybody Miss Me", written in collaboration with Johnny Worth, which formed the title track of her August 1969 United Artists album release. According to Les, “Johnny and I were in Cannes many years ago attending a tribut...

Poor Julie. She was on the cusp of international stardom when nepotism and movie politics intervened. Nancy Sinatra was not chosen to sing YOLT because she had a great voice. She was chosen because she was connected to the right people.

Linda Saxone-Hocking sadly passed away after a bravely-fought battle with cancer in Algarve, Portugal in October 2018. She and her husband were avid golfers. I wasn't able to discover what either of them did for a living - or whether they had any children - following her all to brief singing career. There were a great number of excellent female British singers of that time who should have been bigger stars than they were. Helen Shapiro is another who comes to mind in this respect. Luckily this is a platform where they can once again be heard and appreciated.

Absolutely love this song, I think it would have been amazing used as the title theme. However, if I had to chose between Nancy's version or this one, I might opt for Nancy. While this song is lovely, it lacks catchiness and a momentum that hooks you. Whereas Nancy manages to hook you with every word she sings. Despite being nearly the same length Nancy's version feels too short, yet this one feels like it drags on. I think the producers made the right call, but it must have sucked for Rogers.

It's an honest opinion, and that's what counts. I am. though, very much in favour of Julie's original. I love the Far Eastern intro sound, in keeping with the therme and personally much prefer the song to Nancy's. I wish now that I had thought of preceding this recording with a section of a long, multi-subject interview I had with Julie in which she discusses, at length, her recording session and the politics that resulted in the second song of the same title and Nancy as the vocalist.
