The best in Fifties & Sixties music. The music of, and interviews with, the artists with whom I have worked, written about, programmed in radio shows and featured in my novel 'Nights of the Turntable".
Vic Flick+Les Reed (John Barry Seven) - Twelfth Street Rag mp3
It is 65 years since I was "introduced" to the guitar skills of Vic Flick during his days as a member of the John Barry Seven. The group was, quite simply, a development ground for incredible super-talented individuals. Within just three years Vic would achieve deserved worldwide acclaim for his guitar riff on the 'James Bond Theme'; leader John Barry win a Best Song Oscar for "Born Free", and pianist Les Reed storm the best-sellers with his songwriting hits.
I have always considered myself fortunate in either meeting or interviewing by 'phone music makers for whom I have great respect. Vic was one of these and, for a radio special I was working on, generously contributed his experiences of working with Britain's top female singer of the Fifties, Alma Cogan, on a number of recording sessions, as well as his associations with Les Reed.
I was but a child when first hearing the huge American number one success "Twelfth Street Rag" by Pee Wee Hunt and his Orchestra, and greatly contributed to the wearing out of my mother's 78rpm copy of it. The number has remained a favourite of mine ever since and I have selected the 1959 version by the John Barry Seven as a tribute to Vic and Les since it displays the solo skills of both these extraordinary music talents.
RIP Vic.

Eloise Laws - To Know Him Is To Love Him

Eloise Laws was the fourth of eight children born to Miola Luverta Donahue and Hubert Laws. Theirs was a musical family with siblings that included flautist brother Hubert, saxophonist Ronnie and vocalist Debra. She is, in my view, yet another under appreciated vocal talent whose catalog of work contains several gems worthy of recognition. It didn't need much persuading for the renowned Tamla p...

The title song from the 30-minute short movie "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize" was a monster global hit for Engelbert Humperdinck in 1968, which in turn led to it being recorded by well over a hundred major recording artists around the world. The film is a charming tale of a young cyclist, Steve (played by Anthony May) who falls in love with the poster of a fashion model named Julie (Judy Huxtable)...
Vic Dana - Doesn't Anybody Miss Me

A longtime admirer of Dame Shirley Bassey, I love the quote from Britain's premier songwriter, composer, arranger, conductor and pianist, Les Reed OBE regarding his song, "Does Anybody Miss Me", written in collaboration with Johnny Worth, which formed the title track of her August 1969 United Artists album release. According to Les, “Johnny and I were in Cannes many years ago attending a tribut...

Lorrie Morgan is not simply my favourite Country singer, she is also, in my view, one of the finest of all female song stylists! I love her pitch perfect control, impeccable phrasing and, above all, her penetrative feel for the lyrics, all of which are qualities that a stunning song like Mickey Newbury's "What Will I Do" deserves to do it full justice! Lorrie's treatment of this song is include...

OH that is so beautirul. I cannot find it in English so I guess it wasn't translated or the title is different from the translation which is "I Need To See You" per online translation of the title to english. I love the pix of Connie and Dusty together. Just imagine what powerhouses in the recording industry they were. Add a few other names to it like Petula Clark and Doris Day and others and it is certainly a breathtaking thought. Thanks, J
Connie's English language version of this was titled "You're Mine (Just When You're Lonely)". It was released as the 'B' side to the U.S single "Wishing It Was You" in 1965. My friend Kevin Harkin has it on his channel at th-cam.com/video/ncQK1IEWDG0/w-d-xo.html
Boy, this was beautiful listening to this. Two wonderful entertainers
I hear Janet Jackson's middle name is named after her because she was her Mother 's favorite singer!😊
Wow, just wonderful.. Can hear the Brit accent in this one. Love it! RIP..
Thank you Rich.
Beautiful crisp strong voice.. Thanks for posting
Thank you Rich. A favourite of mine for decades!
Thanks Ron, I've eard both versions and I like this one best. Connieis is the best
Beautiful rendition by Connie, the one and only Connie Francis, emotion personified
If she were British she would undoubtedly have become a Dame!
My mum used to sing this to me. I lost her when l was 31. She was only 56.
I hope this brings sweet memories to you.
Beautiful , heartfelt song! Love PJ! Thanks Ron for taking time to introducing us to so many wonderful artists and their works. Wonderful ❤️xxx
Beautiful song sung by an even more phenomenal singer!

GRACIAS RON. CONNIE FRANCIS POR SIEMPRE, DIOS LA BENDIGA.
Producer Cubby Broccoli had other ideas..He wanted his good friend Frank Sinatra to sing the Bond Song..But Frank said no but how about his daughter Nancy, coming off her big hit..these boots are made for walking. Composer John Barry rewrote You Only Live Twice along with Leslie Bricusse redid the Lyrics. It took what? 30 Takes for Nancy Sinatra to record The Bond Song!
Ben cantata, non poteva essere diversamente dalla grande Milva.
One of my all time favorite singers

Superb
Vic Dana is like my favorite male singer
This is a wonderful song, a real 007 song of the old times. It is a great song! The one by Sinatra is not bad, but it is "just a song", a regular song, nothing more. There is nothing to compare between this song and the song by Sinatra. Thanks for uploading this to TH-cam!
No question about it - the subsequent Nancy SInatra recording and song aren't in the same league as Julie's performance! Delighted you like it!
Linda Saxone-Hocking sadly passed away after a bravely-fought battle with cancer in Algarve, Portugal in October 2018. She and her husband were avid golfers. I wasn't able to discover what either of them did for a living - or whether they had any children - following her all to brief singing career. There were a great number of excellent female British singers of that time who should have been bigger stars than they were. Helen Shapiro is another who comes to mind in this respect. Luckily this is a platform where they can once again be heard and appreciated.
Absolutely love this song, I think it would have been amazing used as the title theme. However, if I had to chose between Nancy's version or this one, I might opt for Nancy. While this song is lovely, it lacks catchiness and a momentum that hooks you. Whereas Nancy manages to hook you with every word she sings. Despite being nearly the same length Nancy's version feels too short, yet this one feels like it drags on. I think the producers made the right call, but it must have sucked for Rogers.
It's an honest opinion, and that's what counts. I am. though, very much in favour of Julie's original. I love the Far Eastern intro sound, in keeping with the therme and personally much prefer the song to Nancy's. I wish now that I had thought of preceding this recording with a section of a long, multi-subject interview I had with Julie in which she discusses, at length, her recording session and the politics that resulted in the second song of the same title and Nancy as the vocalist.
Never heard this version by the boys ? Beautiful harmonising...❤
Great 🙏🏽👌🏽
Dick Clark played this on American Bandstand . It should have been a bigger hit .
I think that version by Alma was only released and heard after her passing. Quite prophetic really. This was a great version of the song and proved that Alma was capable of much more than just novelty records.
So many times I need to hear this!!! Sing it Lorrie

A great song by Petula. This English version was unreleased in 1970, when she recorded it.
One of my favorite Teresa Brewer songs ❤️
I felt this truly deserved to have been a hit, Marilyn. Never tire of playing it! 💖
@@ronroberts neither do I. She’s wonderful ♥️
Love this version.
It's a very different version. I dont like the spoken bit.
I love Janice's interpretation, but am not a fan of the recitations that were featured by so many female artists of that era.
Great record by Janice Harper.
Glad you like it, David. This so deserved to have been a hit!
This version sounds dated even for 1966. The Nancy Sinatra version is much better!
