Born Sidney Liebowitz, the son of Brooklyn synagogue Beth Sholom Tomchei Harab cantor, Max, Steve Lawrence was in my view one of the all time greatest male song stylists to emerge in the 1950s.
Only 18 when hired by Steve Allen to be one of the singers on his New York City local late night show on WNBC-TV in 1953, he was in very good company. With him on that show was future wife, Eydie Gormé, and another outstanding male artist, Andy Williams. That local TV show was picked up by NBC for its national network, becoming 'The Tonight Show'. All three song star luminaries were with the show until 1957 - a year that also saw Lawrence climb the bestsellers with "Party Doll", reaching #5 in the national charts. What is, perhaps, less well known is that Steve made his U.S. pop charts début with "Poinciana" in 1952 when just 17 years of age and, over a 12-year period, placed 17 titles in the nation's weekly Top 100 sellers.
In 1960 he hit #7 with "Footsteps", a catchy number with which he gained his first UK success and reached #4 in the local charts. In '61 he again made the US Top 10 with his cover of the major Matt Monro British success "Portrait of My Love". Steve's biggest selling title was "Go Away Little Girl", written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, which, in 1962, provided him with his only U.S chart topper.
Both as a solo performer and as a duo with Eydie Gormé, whom he married in Las Vegas in December 1957, Steve was an award-winning success. They had been wed 55 years when Eydie died on August 10, 2013. In June 2019 he announced that he was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. His death yesterday was caused by complications due to that condition.
Steve is one of the most represented of male artists in my music collection. There are many hundreds of titles from which to choose one in tribute to him. I have, however, selected two: the first, his heartfelt English and Yiddish vocals to "Where Can I Go" - at • Steve Lawrence - Where... - that I regard as one of finest vocals, taking him back to his roots; and "I've Got My Eyes On You", written by Britain foremost songwriter, composer, pianist, arranger and conductor, Les Reed and Jackie Rae.
RIP Steve. Thank you for so many magical music memories.
