  • I became a big fan of The Barry Sisters thanks to my mother's collection of their music. Born in the Bronx, New York to Russian and Austro-Hungarian Jewish parents, Clara and Minnie started singing under their real name of The Bagelman Sisters. Their father, Herman, told them to perform in the manner of their heritage and not to do so with American accents. As the Bagelman Sisters, they received their first break on WLTH Radio's "Uncle Norman" show for children and in their early teens began their recording career with Victor Records.
The then most popular female siblings act were The Andrews Sisters. It was after they had scored a major hit with their English adaptation of the Yiddish favourite, "Bei Mir Bust Du Schön" that songwriter-musician Sam Medoff launched his "Yiddish Melodies in Swing" radio program on New York's WHN. Medoff was more popularly known as songwriter Dick Manning, whose many celebrated hits include "Hawaiian Wedding Song", "I Can't Tell a Waltz from a Tango", "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again" and "Papa Loves Mambo". It was prior to their long run of appearances on his show that the girls adopted the stage name of the Barry Sisters.
Their most successful albums were recorded for Cadence and Roulette Records, embracing English-sung swing material, Yiddish originals and favourites, and adaptations of popular hits into that language. As a female harmony duo, I consider them without equal. Equally at home with swing as with their tear-laden Yiddish vocals, the Barry Sisters are in an uptempo happy mood as they celebrate the Jewish festival of 'Pesach' with their "Passover Medley".
