    You haven't built very many transmissions. Gasket doesn't need any sealer but front retainer bolts do have to have sealer on their threads.

    Great videos, thanks. I just bought a '77 model 90 in great shape at a school auction... and wouldn't you know it? They optioned it for a single phase motor. So I can't do this conversion unless I actively seek out a 3 phase motor replacement! The reeves speed control is still a big upgrade for me, tho. The minimum pulley speed on my old rockwell was 900rpm! Looking at the manual, I think my slowest speed on this PM90 is about 320rpm so still a little fast for roughing on 10 or so inch bowls but still way better than 900.

      @georgebell7103 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the comment. Yeah, having both the mechanical reeves speed control, and also motor speed control is really a nice combination if you can do it….. you would need a 3 phase motor and VFD to configure as I have demonstrated in this video. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

      @@georgebell7103 TH-cam disallows links, even to itself, but there will be videos that explain by searching TH-cam with "rvs technology how it works". So far only tried it on my BMW aircooled motorcycle, where the only difference felt was that it runs a bit cooler. But I know of two others with worn engines where it made a much bigger difference. It works for surface wear, but maybe it cannot prevent metal fatique and pitting, not sure.

    Hello, I have a 1930 model A cabriolet. Went to the store last night, shut down the car, came back out and she would not move-though the parking brake was on or the wheels were blocked. It acted like the gear shift lever was stuck and I could not get the car into gear. Neutral position on the gear lever was at the top near the dash. After some nasty words and rocking the car a bit, I could get it into third and was able to get home. It drove like it always does with no issues. After watching your video's I came to the conclusion the shift tower needs a rebuild. The 2nd & 3rd shift rail was very easy to remove. The shift rail for low and reverse was a bugger to remove from the housing as were the plunger and spring. The shift forks look fine. I did not see any wear on the plungers or springs, but the rails seemed to have excessive wear. I was worried something went haywire in the gearbox but I was able to move the 2nd & High and Low & Rev gear very easily. So, my question to you is; have you ever run across the before? and am I one the right track? Is there something I may have missed? Sorry for the long question and Thank You!

      I don’t know for sure, I am a bit surprised the reversing lever casting does not have a passage way for the wicks. The SB parts manual shows all lathes are nearly identical from 10 - 24 inch. Except for the size of the part. Suggest you find a parts manual with diagrams for your exact machine… then you will know for sure. Good luck!

    I have two model a cars. Both transmissions ran and sounded great, no noise. I took one apart, and I found that the roller bearings were broken. The surfaces were all chewed up. I replaced everything. I then checked the other transmission, same thing. I suspect that there is a weakness in the roller bearings. A side note, I knew of a part supplier that sand blasted the inside of the transmission housing. When you replaced the gears, all of the blasting media fell out. The gears had to be taken out and the housing had to be recleaned.😢😢

    Thanks for the video series George! Extremely well done and a great resource. To remove the bull gear from the spindle, did you heat the gear (like you said you did on its installation), and/or did you use a press of some sort? I have the same vintage 13 as yours, with the D1 spindle. What are you thoughts on the importance of removing the bull gear if it becomes a real challenge? Do you think being able to remove/inspect/clean the headstock end bronze bearings is critical? Thanks!

      I think I pressed the bull gear out…. Banged it out. I don’t recall if I heated it or not, probably did. I really don’t know what is critical. My videos show what I did. What you do is dependent on so many things….. how much you want to take apart, how hard it is, as you mention. How dirty, how worn the machine is… etc. send me an email, we can talk on the phone if you wish.

The important part of taper pin removal is to find the small end, hit it hard with good support so that the force of the blow is directed at the pin, and not in deforming the shaft.
