@@georgebell7103 George, you are a natural when it comes to teaching and demonstrating the order of a section or segment of the parts and how to accomplish that. My taper attachment is on backwards. I can tell it can go either way in terms of degrees or taper per foot, but it seems being able to see the degrees facing you makes it easier to deal with. I need to make the sheet metal cover to keep the chips out. My doctors have told me not to drive anymore or pickup anything heavier than a cup of coffee. Pretty hard to do when at one time I could walk around carrying 300 pounds. It's a hard pill to swallow and except the fact that you aren't able to carry on like you once did. The use of my engine lift helps but it takes up so much time to get into position. Your video series is Award Winning. Thank you so much. I hope you will continue to show us the projects you do on your lathe as a top-notch Hobbyist.

George you produced an excellent video. As a result, I was able to take apart, clean up and put my taper attachment into operation. We followed every step exactly as you demonstrated. Video quality, lighting and sound are exceptional. It took me about 3 hours from start to finish. used a lot of Kroll to get screws to release. Back into service like the day it was made.
great video nice to see you useing spanners that actualy fit, instead of the adjustable spanner self adjusting hex rounding devices that most other people have a must have for, well done..

George great videos! Thanks for making these. I’m workin on rebuilding my 1968 10” and haven’t seen any videos on the taper attachment. Mine has so much rust and grime you’d swear it came off the titanic. Now I know where to hit with a hammer to disassemble and where not to!
A beautiful South Bend 13 George. It looks like it's truly restored to factory condition. I also have a 1980"s model 13" which has been restored which includes reground bed and scraped headstock, carriage, compound and tail stock. In fact, it looks a lot like yours, color and all.
Nice series on the SB resto. Having done a couple, I know how much work goes into it. Great job explaining and showing everything. Couldn't have done it better myself!

If I ever get around to restoring my SB 13, I'll have to refer back to your videos. There's a few differences between the 13's and the 10L's. It always nice to have a visual. Very well done. I have a South Bend 10L heavy with taper and a FOURTEEN with taper. The taper sizes are confusing. I’d have to go back to my manuals, but it appears as though the attachment for the old 13, 14 1/2 and my Fourteen have the same size attachment. I’ve never seen the cover for the slot in the wild. I’m sorry I didn’t buy them when South Bend was still around and I bought parts for my lathes from them, so I had to make my own.
beautiful cleanup. I'm not sure why but to get the backlash out I had to feed from left to right on a Cincinnati zip shift lathe for the taper attachment to engage at the beginning of the cut.
I really appreciate your video on the restoration of a Southbend telescoping taper attachment. I have that taper attachment with all the parts except the two thrust ball bearings which hold the sleeve in place. I have made attempts to purchase these bearings but with little success. The bearing supply place I went to didn't seem to be able to determine which ball thrust bearing would work. Any chance you have identifying numbers for those two bearings you could share with me? Thank you
Thanks for the nice comment. I do not, however they are nominal sizes and available. Suggest you measure the shaft and opening carefully to get the OD and ID. Then go on the Macmaster Carr web site to find the correct thrust bearings. If this does not work for you, send me a note and I will take mine out and measure them for you. Then we can figure it out.
Hi George Bell. Thanks for the great videos. Did you end up replacing your thrust bearings? Seems like the sizes are a bit wonky. I'm having some trouble tracking down replacements for my Heavy 10.
Thanks for the nice comment. In my case all the bearings were in good shape or only needed steel balls replaced. McMaster-Car is the place to go for replacements, they have a great website, and lots of bearings. Replacements will likely not be roller ball bearings, but needle bearings which are actually better. If you need replacements I would go to McMaster Car, and replace with needle bearings. Measure carefully all dimensions so the new needle bearings fit properly. Good luck
Not quite sure what you are asking. Cross feed screw is in two pieces for a lathe with a taper attachment. On a lathe without a taper attachment, the cross feed screw is one piece.
I may not understand your question.... when the taper attachment locking lever is locked the movement of the cross slide is totally controlled by the angle set on the taper.
Is nice, l make one out of 3/4 inch bar with bushings for my Logan,, didn't want 50 lbs dragging on my ways all the time when not cutting tapers no more than I do .
Old video I know but isnt there supposed to be another Bar or guide at the front of the taper attachment connecting it to the bed ways like the one at the rear, You can clearly see in your video how much the attachment is flexing or pivoting at the front of the attachment completely throwing off the actual taper
Nope, the taper attachment for this machine has no attachment in the front. Only on the tailstock side. I think the flexing you see is during assembly is because nothing is tight yet. Gibs are all loose during the assembly.

I think another support on the headstock side would not be a bad idea. However, South Bend designed their taper attachment with only one additional support on the tailstock side.
I see what you mean on the flexing... I did not have the gibs tight when I did the simple demo. When the gibs are tightened up there is no play at all on the taper attachment. As you have noted in your comment any movement would indeed would throw off any attempt at an accurate taper. Thanks for your comment.
@@georgebell7103 Thanks for the replies, While I have never owned a Southbend I have always found them to be some beautiful old iron, I have two Logan 11X36 one is a standard and one a turret that I converted to a standard and a custom made taig micro with a four foot bed. You can never have enough machines that spin in circles!

These South Be d attachments are telescoping. I believe the standard Hardinge is the simple non telescoping type.

Is the cross feed screw the same or is it different?

What I don't understand is what keeps the cross slide from moving when the locking lever is unlocked.
