    I have a mid 70's model 90. I think I'm going to do the same thing to it. Wired a 3 phase motor with a VFD on my drill press and love it.

      Yes, speed control is very nice on three phase motors plus VFD. Thanks for your comment

    Thank you for putting this together. I picked up a model 45 with a 3 phase. I had restored other tools with 3 phase power, but the reeves drive combined with 3 phase was new to me. Lots more tinkering to do before its fully operational. Thank you for your informative video and wiring diagram.

    Great video! Viewers be aware that the motor has very low torque at low speeds.

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes, this is correct. Motor alone at low speeds has very low torque. However, you can work with low speeds on the spindle, by setting the mechanical speed control to low, and increasing the motor speed.

      @@georgebell7103 all you need to run a 3 phase motor on 110 is a cheap VFD and a lifetime of engineering knowledge. thanks for sharing i didnt know it was so simple. i see your floor jack in the background, and notice you have your lathe on casters. i am currently contemplating buying a 700 pound lathe. i am watching other youtubers show how they move and lift big stuff.

      @@terrypriest6471 Yes, it is quite simple to hook up the VFD. Much easier that it might seam at first. Yes, I have everything in the shop, save the metal lathe, on casters. Makes the shop easier to clean and more versatile, when unique projects come along. Machines than need a good foundation also have leveling feet which can retract when moving them on the casters. Great videos, thanks. I just bought a '77 model 90 in great shape at a school auction... and wouldn't you know it? They optioned it for a single phase motor. So I can't do this conversion unless I actively seek out a 3 phase motor replacement!
    The reeves speed control is still a big upgrade for me, tho. The minimum pulley speed on my old rockwell was 900rpm! Looking at the manual, I think my slowest speed on this PM90 is about 320rpm so still a little fast for roughing on 10 or so inch bowls but still way better than 900.

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. Yeah, having both the mechanical reeves speed control, and also motor speed control is really a nice combination if you can do it….. you would need a 3 phase motor and VFD to configure as I have demonstrated in this video. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

    Thanks George. I have the same P90 the exact same model with aluminum labeled wrap around the speed dial rather than the cast numbers. According the serial number lookup mine is a 1969. Oddly, mine has a 1.5hp single phase motor. It looks like it was a special order, unless someone did an excellent job retrofitting the motor. I may someday switch it to a three phase with VFD but that's a future possibility. Thanks again for the very informative video. I really appreciate when someone takes the time to share knowledge. If by chance you know where I could purchase a new aluminum label for the speed dial I'd also appreciate that too, mine is badly scratched. Great video, cheers.

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. I suspect you machine was ordered with a single phase motor. The VFD really adds flexibility to the operation of the machine. I do not know where a new replacement aluminum band can be found. You might consider removing it and perhaps printing on the back then reinstalling it. Good luck

      @georgebell7103  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment, TECO has updated their Line of VFDs. So, you could just get their current offering. However, I don’t think it matters, there are several makers of good quality units. Just make sure you size the VFD to be capable of handling the amperage requirements of your motor. Good luck.

      I appreciate what you are saying, but I don’t have a parts list for all the switches I used. The wire diagram was included the the video, so folks could see how the electronics work and understand the theory of operations. I am reluctant to publish every detail (specific part numbers etc.) for fear people would simply copy everything I did, not understand what they were doing, and get in trouble. Possibly finding themselves hopelessly confused about why things aren’t working, or even hurt.

    I am in the middle of a restore of a Powermatic 90 with a Baldor Baltric 1hp, 3ph motor. I would guess around a 1966 model. Bolts from the bottom for the bed. I am a little confused about the wiring. Is the low voltage on the VFD AC or DC? I can not verify if the motor will even run with a VFD. I also don't know which potentiometer to choose as there are many different resistance types. Could you help me out?

    Hi George, Excellent video! I'm also restoring a 3-phase Model 90, using a VFD. Question about the original wiring - specifically the three wires associated with the Reeves Drive. Does this wiring also get removed? You demonstrated that your Reeves Drive still works. If its wiring is removed, then the assumption is that this speed adjustment is only by the OEM speed control increasing/decreasing the diameter of the upper pulley. Is that the case? Or, if that wiring remains, where does it connected? Thanks, Dan. Thousand Oaks, CA

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. My machine only had pieces of the original wiring, So, I cannot speak to it with great authority. The reeves drive is all mechanical. Change speed by moving the pulleys in and out by the control lever. The original wiring used a low voltage control system to turn the motor on and off, as shown in the video. Send me a not via email, we can discuss further if desired. Pargolongago@yahoo.com

    Iv watched both of your Vfd installations
    I can see your useing a Teco FM-50.
    But I don’t know what specific model it is.
    I see them on EBay at good price but I’m afraid of getting the wrong one.
    I have a S.B 13 running on a home built Rotary phase converter I made. It was a fun project and learned a lot. But I keep going back to your Vfd and how nice they are wired up and running.
    If I get a teco FM50 three phase in /three phase out can it be wired in L1 and L2 in and three phase out L1 L2 L3 ?
    Or is it specifically Single phase in and three phase out
    Hope I’m wording this Wright lol
    Thanks

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. I believe TECO has upgraded their VFD drives, and the FM50 is no longer available. VFDs come in many configurations, be careful what you buy. Make sure the input is what you have available, in the shop, typically 1 phase, 120V or 240V. Make sure the VFD specifications match your input and output needs and the amp output is consistent with the motor you are trying to control. 3 phase input will not work if your shop does not have 3 phase power. Email me if you want to discuss further. PargoLongAgo@Yahoo.com. Good luck.
