    George, I will be taking my SB13 gearbox apart tomorrow. I have already finished the motor, countershaft, headstock, and reversing gears. Your videos have been most helpful at every step. Thank you so much.

    Great video! I'm working on a 1963 lathe with the exact same castings. The gearbox is destroyed down to the last gear, it seems someone shuffled the gears around to try and keep the leadscrew running...Great to see a working one! I didn't know about that retainer after the bushing, your video will help alot.

    Why the different paint on the gearbox casting? Some items received fresh paint, while others didn’t.

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any parts that are cast iron are painted. Any parts that have a machined surface are not painted. So, all gears, shafts and machined parts of the casting are not painted.

  • @Militarycollector
    @Militarycollector 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the heavy 10 if the headstock is on you can only get 2 of the 3 bolts that hold on the gearbox .. a small part of the headstock actually covers up about 1/3 of the size of the hole for the third bolt keeping it from being able to fit down in the hole and screw the last bolt into the gearbox… I don’t know why it’s made like that,, it seems that South Bend could have easily modified the headstock or the gearbox Hole or whatever by just an eighth of an inch avoiding this problem.. oh well…

      Nice set of videos. Can you give the information on the two thrust bearings on the drive screw side? Also the needle bearings in the selector levers? Did you machine your own bronze bushings on the other holes?

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t recall the sizes of the bearings. I suggest you measure the old bearings carefully, and order from Mac master Carr. They have a great web site. Yes I did not show it on the video, but yes you will need to machine the bronze bushings.... thanks for the nice comment

    Good Videos. How would you add synchronizers to second and third gears?

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! Don’t think synchronization is possible in a metal lathe gear box. All shifting of gears require the machine to to be stopped

    • @rayfridley6649
      @rayfridley6649 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgebell7103 Mr Bell, sir. Your videos on a Model A's transmission's gear box are great!
      My question on synchronization concerns adding synchronizers to second and third gears in order that these are set spinning just before they are engaged. Not only having such would make gear shifting smoother but would also delete the need to double-clutch and prevent much wear and tear on the gears themselves. Starting in the 1930s, synchronized became standard for those reasons.

    • @georgebell7103
      @georgebell7103  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray, I was confused by your question on this video...I believe Ford did add synchronization as transmissions developed in the 30s and 40s... and I also believe modern synchronized transmissions are available for the Model A. Not aware of any additions that can be made to the original transmission.
