    Thanks for sharing!
Very good explanation and a very nice bearing heating technique 😀

Hey George, my old SBL has a single phase 1hp motor. I was kind of surprised by that. My guess is it was used in a small high school shop. Anyway, can a guy use the same VFD on a single phase motor to get that sort of variable speed set up?
Motor has 5 wires coming out, green, white, Black, red and orange. Probably a reversible motor is my guess. Frame 203, which I think will be hard to find these days.

Ryan, I don’t believe you can get a VFD or other controller that provides speed control for a single phase AC motor. You did not mention the type SBL you have. I suggest you get the motor the machine was designed for, 13 inch will be 3 Phase 2 or maybe 3 HP. 10 inch or less may be single phase, I think. Don’t know for sure. Good luck in your efforts.

George Bell this is the original motor. I have the 13" SBL. The serial number card lists the same motor size and rating. 1ph, 1hp, 1750 rpm, frame 203, 115/230v. I think I'd prefer a 2hp motor. I'm on the fence about using this original one or not.

I would not have thought 1 HP would be supplied with a 13 inch Machine, I guess I don’t know much. Check out the “Motor Control” video in this series, if you have not already, it may help you make a decision. 2HP is good on my machine, and I know they were supplied with 3HP as well. PargoLongAgo@Yahoo.com is my email if you want to discuss. Good luck with your project.

Great vid! How did you figure what type bearings you had and needed? And where did you buy yours?

To replace bearings, I recommend you carefully measure the old, and purchase new form Mcmaster Carr, or other on line source. Of you are not experienced, take the old bearings to a local bearing supply. Good luck!

I have an old jointer for woodworking that uses an electric motor. It doesn't spin as freely as I'd like when its off. Can the bearings simply be lubricated first? (Assuming they are not deformed)

Sure, look for a grease fitting or an oiler, older moters may need oiling directly on the shaft then the oil will migrate to the bearing.. Good luck.

George Bell Okay, thanks George! I don't see a fitting...so I'll give it a go on the motor's shaft.

what size bearings did you buy for this .... and for any other parts on your 13

I don’t recall the bearing sizes. You are better off replacing your bearings matching what you take out. There were a bunch of bearings for the entire restoration. I bought them all from McMaster Carr. Measure carefully, make a list and go to their website.

Hi I brought a harbor freight 3 hp 220v only to find out my garage is not wired for 220v is there anyway to use 120v on it just asking don't know much about it!

I suggest you return the motor and get something that uses 120 volt. I have seen up to 2 hp 120 volt motors. Perhaps you can install a 240 volt circuit in your shop.
Cannot turn a 120 volt circuit into a 240 volt circuit.

about small motor 1/3 hp its running bit need push to start rotate im using on sewer lane machine how fix it

Genearally, slow starting, or a need for help starting, means your motor has a bad start capacitor. I suggest replace the capacitor or get a new motor.

George Bell im goma try new capacitor

The start capacitor probably needs to be replaced. On a small motor such as yours, the start capacitor can be found in the housing that sticks out from the motor like a hump.
