I’m passionate about making tarot-reading clear and accessible to everyone. My channel is for both experienced tarot-fans and absolute beginners. I help you to find your way through the jungle of tarot-books and I review a curated selection of decks so that you can find the perfect one.
I go live once a month and chat with anyone who wants to join (although my live streams subscribers-only, to minimise disruption from jokers). These are opportunities to ask me questions, exchange ideas and tips, and read cards together.
I post one video per week, on Sundays, including a reading once a month for the month ahead. My live streams are on Sundays at 19:00 GMT. (In months with five Sundays I may do two, with one of them on a Saturday).
So stop by, have a look and tell me what you think. Be as frank as you like - but I only reply to comments if they are polite!
My book, co-written with Michael Atavar, will hopefully be launched on Kickstarter this year. I'll keep you posted.

Seven more tarot books I DON'T recommend #nodisclaimerstarot
This is a "Part Two" to my rather popular video of eighteen months ago, in which I moaned and whined about some tarot books that I didn't like. So here are my bêtes noirs of the last year and a half - but I try to be fair and tell you what they are about, so that you can decide for yourself if you want to read them.

I have a quartz ball, an obsidian ball, and a glass ball. I should try this.
The Hermit ... well it reminds me of figures like the Cailleach, Baba Yaga ... the old One of the Magna Mater, somtimes part of the triple Godess, related to winter (introspection and running out of time), yet in a younger gaze (the stories sometimes tell about it). The raven is a bird the Old One can shapeshift into, sometimes there are raven companions. However ... if that's the background of the figure, the author/artist needs to tell us about it. The way the description of the card is written, is just not fitting. "I felt that way" is no explanation. 12:58 ... the honest approach to Pixies identities would have been, that she acted as a "shapeshifter". Making believe people to be Japanese, Black or "gypsie". So the racial part was certainly appropriation. The queer part ... is mostly about how we conceptualise queer. Rejecting the heteronormative order alone ... might qualify (especially when we take "living queer" and queer church history into account). But that's a long and dreary discussion. Anyway: An apt editor wouldn't have let the words of Pavlov get printed that way. (Then: Appropriation, projection, and totally made-up things do have a long tradition in occultism and esoterics. I assume claiming that to be especially true for the Golden Dawn wouldn't be anything near lying.) It's tirering nontheless. 24:56 ... yeah! To me a deck needs to have a very good reason to depict the world card as a binary sexed/gendered person [1]. There are decks that are successful with depicting a male or female figure (for being coherent with the overall deck - the William Blake Decks is one example, the Shadowscapes another). However: Most decks, that do so fail that card. (I don't consider the RWS to have a particulary good world card.) ____________ [1] To me depicting a trans man or trans woman doesn't do the trick! At the end of the video: ... I'm wondering what all the quite obvious links to slavic/Russian myth and culture mean ... and why their symbology don't appear in the review. Anyway ... despite all my criticism of the review: *Many Thanks* for doing the review. Even if I don't agree on quite a few parts ... my final assessment is very similar. Just a bit about that: I don't see Judgement as another Death card. Judgement very much reminds me of Matthew 8:8. However I do view the Lovers as another Devil card. The hand fasting doesn't look like a decision, but rather as an entanglement. Also: My take on gender/sex in the deck is quite different. But I agree that the deck isn't balanced too well.
I went to my local shop for Morgan Greer tarot bc they don't have it online and neither in the store- it's simply out of stock - just my luck - but I spotted this deck and went home and watching your video.I'm going to get it tomorrow bc it reminds me of a Czech artist Saudek who did a black and white comic book and some black and white art work in same fashion for a Czech movie in the early 70's - I might be wrong. But this is kinda like what he did- good looking half naked people with flowy hair and draping 😊I remember being 10 years old girl and stealing my older brother's comic book and reading it in secret 😄 bc he had always have cool stuff.Lovely memory. thx for the flip through
@@justmeiam4996 Yes, it’s a cool deck 👍
Hmmm ... photographic decks are difficult - for they more often than not feel kind of forced. The pictures often show a lot of personality and don't manage to tap into archetypical energy enough. Example of a card in the Ghetto Tarot I could read: The 9 of Swords. Example of a card I couldn't: The 7 of Pentacles. Additionally: I too do take issue with stages and actors. However, that's an issue I also do have with the RWS (among many others). Generally speaking: I am very picky with photographic decks (as well als with collage and B/W decks). The (photographic) Somnia Tarot should be fine. The price tag is the only reason it's still on my to-buy-list. There's a painted version available to, but I always keep coming back to the original one.
@@FR0STBL0D Yes, I think the 9 of Swords in the Ghetto Tarot is one of the cards that works.
There's another way of shuffling cards (and it's probably the most effective one). However it needs some (one time) preparation: Sleeving your deck. The suffling technique is sometimes called "mashing" and there are tutorial videos here on YT ... from the Trading Card Game scene. Searching for "TCG" or "CCG" (or "Magic" or "Pokemon" or "Yugioh") and "shuffle" should get you to some helpful videos. However, there's a downside: Depending on how loose the sleeves fit, you might lose some riffle-shuffleability. Swooshing gets even more fiddly - with increased risk of damaging your sleeves or the cards. (Generally speaking, I'd recommend sleeving only for decks printed on flimsy card stock or for deck that catch wear pretty fast. Also on decks where you want some extra protection. There's a who range of Sleeves available for almost any card size you can think of. Sleeve Kings and Mayday Games are some producers that offer quite a large selection of sizes. Yet, there are also others. I sleeved my German Version of the Murrays' The Celtic Tree Oracle (for the deck started to catch wear), Ian Miller's Grim Tarock (for some extra protection for the art deck and because the cardstock didn't seem to be too durable), the Wild Unknown Pocket Deck (for an easier shuffle - for like many pocket decks it's a chuck of a deck) and some others.)
Hmmm ... I guess ... I'll probably get the "The real Old deck" - not because I like the battered cards so much (some I consider to be quite distracting), but for the absence of garishness in the colours, the greater diversity in the cards and the nice back side. The distractive elements of the cards themselves won't probably matter - as I intend to use the deck as a RWS reference deck. And not for readings. I can see the mixing of RWS and Marseilles as a feature - for many of the decks I use are inspired by one of them or both (some even with thoth influences) - but use their own system (William Blake Tarot, Hoodoo Tarot, ...). So ... what I'm searching for ... is a RWS that manages to be a sound reference for minors depicted in that tradition - without all the whiteness of the people, with somewhat less binary gendered folks, without most of the colonial symbolism and maybe without the elemental alignments (to me any suit can be aligned with any element - the Badger's Forest does a very good job in showing that). Thanks a lot for showing the deck.

Actually, the Tarot in general was and is a very Catholic thing. The Popess card, depending on the source one reads, depicts either Pope Joan or Sister Manfreda - neither of them orthodox Catholic women by any stretch of the imagination but their stories were already old and well-known by the time Tarot was being created. The Pope was a natural figure to include in the pack although the Besançon tradition/variant replaces them both with Juno and Jupiter. And then of course the Virtues and scores of other Catholic symbols and theology are imbedded within the cards as well - the resurrection of the dead on Judgement, The Devil, the ciborium of the Ace of Cups, etc. Moving on to the Rider-Waite-Smith the trend continues with Death and The High Priestess coming immediately to mind, Death depicted as described in the Bible and The High Priestess clearly drawing inspiration from art/depictions of the Virgin Mary. The Ace of Cups screams transubstantiation showing as it does the dove of the Holy Spirit with the Eucharist and the chalice with an M for Mary/Maria on it and The Lovers needs no explanation - the tree, the snake, the angel. Examples abound and of course Waite was raised Catholic and Pamela became a devoted Catholic and remained so for the rest of her life but nearly everyone ignores or dismisses this - as an aside, Pavlov is incorrect in describing her as a “queer woman of color” - I think the Urban Tarot also stated the same but her being queer is unknowable and only speculation and her being a woman of color is a complete myth (the American Renaissance Tarot website has a superb and lengthy article, “Pamela Colman Smith: American” that thoroughly debunks this) . But to return to my point! The Catholic religion is all throughout the classical packs of cards although of course not many of the newer ones and definitely not for the Thoth (naturally). It’s really terribly interesting, at least to me. But anyway I was kept up until 3 AM last night watching your videos, your analysis of Rachel Pollack’s vastly overhyped book was brilliant - she has her fans but I too am not amongst them!
@@neptunian_dreamer6526 Thanks for your lovely message. I’m going to read that article about Pamela!
😊 tarot has a lot of influence from bible - wouldn't neccecerily say catholic bc if it was catholic- there is no place for soothsayers and fortune tellers meaning it's forbidden so there wouldn't be tarot at all- I grew up in catholic church so I know a lot.Since I tend to dab into things lot of stuff that's in the bible or is done or used during a mis is basically stuff that's been taken from other "religions" or folks witchcraft. And you can see that in the tarot too. Some flower that's healing, half a moon here and there you could go on for days that's why I love tarot (even though I don't really read books about it or it's "makers"). technically it's not about religion, skin color or a country it's about symbolism and what it means to a person.A heart is universally love or pain depends on what a person is going through.
@ none of the other churches existed yet at the time and place Tarot was created, so yes, influenced by Catholicism through and through… but the cards were originally created simply for playing card games, trick games and tarocchi etc. The divinatory uses came later and the psychological ones even much much later than that. The cards themselves though would be in existence whether or not people eventually created divinatory meanings and methods or whatever other uses they devised for them. The history of the cards is so much fun!! ❤️ EDIT: I should also add that I am speaking here of the earliest decks, the RWS of course draws inspiration from other sources as well ☺️
@@neptunian_dreamer6526😳 interesting,I thought that tarot was kinda french game from 15-16 century - I do have a book about it but I prefer more just work with the cards themselves.Catholicism is pretty old there's this guy who's talking about it and symbolism (very interesting)and Annunaki😅- I forgot his name but he's quite known- Jordan Maxwell
Cheers to your Aunt Sybil. I'll adopt her style of expressing disagreement. Your channel is very interesting. Kudos to you for daring to critique the books that are often recommended by default. Abut the decans: I have established a practice for the last years that has helped me get a better understanding of the minors (and I have worked with the tarot for decades). I have put up a magnetic board where I put up the cards of each decan from different decks. These cards change every ten days, together with the major and court cards associated with the decan. For me, the decans have become very meaningful. I also added a Tree of Life and mark the sefira we're currently in. So for me, the Chang book sounds very interesting and I'll take your review as a recommendation ;-)
@@nemiatarot497 Yes it sounds like you might enjoy the Chang book. I think it’s very much a matter of temperament. I’m glad that people can take my disrecommendations as recommendations! I try to be balanced:-)
Your reviews are the best. I agree about Robert Place. I love his art, but the deck and alchemy have morphed so much into something I'm not interested in that it loses a lot of it's charm. I am sure I've said it before, but if he would do other theming in his decks it would be fabulous. all I know about Alistair Crowley is from Current 93. I'm just not sure about it all, but perhaps some reading should ensue.
@@paillette2010 Thanks for your appreciation. I felt I needed to know a bit about Crowley. My conclusion is that he’s interesting but not important for tarot.
@@teatarot4557 That's good to know. I knew a lot of "witch leaning" people in Seattle in the 90's, so it was kind of fringe for me. Of course I think it went hand in hand with goth culture. Again, thanks for the super helpful video
Science is developed by man and many men live by values. Culture though can influence science, men. And of course trauma influences men to be less moral as well as culture
Hello Robert. You are saying things about tarot that I have not been able to articulate- mostly that feeling that many of my reference books seem to have a lot of "fairies dancing on the head of a pin". I do love the details and symbology, so maybe I will appreciate the deep dives more as I progress, but I am more of an everyday reader I guess, and I even like to ask people who have no tarot "education" to help me understand a card, and it is usually helpful. This is a very enjoyable and helpful video, I can only guess how much time and effort it took to make! Thank you very much for sharing it here.

It is a forfeit deck. You can easily look that up online. You shouldn’t do reviews of forfeit decks because it sends out the wrong message. Also if you are reviewing a deck then definitely you have to consider the book. If you read more “intuitively” then there shouldn’t really be a problem picking up meaning from an image.

@@marinathea990 Thank you! 👍
Regarding the last one reviewed, I'm so glad you mentioned Paul Huson's book. From what I've come across to date, his Mystical Origins of the Tarot has been the best for explaining the weirdness of the 36 minors, pointing out GD errors w/ swapped out picatrix/decans & meanings cobbled together with Etteilla, etc... One book that weaves the yearly 10 day astrological cycles into the minor arcana that I actually enjoyed was written by Muriel Bruce Hasbrouck and simply titled, Tarot & Astrology: The Pursuit of Destiny. It was originally published in 1941 but has been kept in print & not hard to find.

@@terriw6116 It's honestly my favourite deck to use. I find myself "falling" into the art and a lot seems to come to me intuitively. I use the major arcana for channeling and find it very effective. I get that it's not for everyone, and there are people I wouldn't use it with but that's true of all my decks. I was told it was a Thoth deck, I don't know what that means to me as a reader, I don't feel any difference in the quality of my readings with this vs RWS trad decks. It is a very beautiful deck to me and somehow scratches an itch in my brain that I didn't know I had.
Hey Robert, Really appreciate your videos. I'm pretty sure Anthony Louis is not a Jungian. He is a very well-known Astrologer. Glad you mentioned his book. I thought it was excellent. It's very thorough as are most of his books. Not always an easy read but this one I found very readable. It helps having some prior knowledge of Astrology. He introduces the reader to a lot of other tarot resources. The Title is apt. It will take the student "Beyond the Basics"
Well done. Thank you.
Thank you Robert, that was interesting and fun. I have been trying out that spread where you picked the card to represent the question, and the side cards, and then which house it lands in. Did you come up with that?
@@nacmegfeegle2310 I don’t think anything in tarot is new :-) Dealing the cards into 12 piles and searching for the significator is probably something I got from Eden Gray or maybe the oldies like AE Waite. What you can do is deal the whole pack into 12 piles, find the significator, then use the pile it is in for a 7 card reading. You may have to add a 7th card, depending on which pile it is in.
Ah I missed it. I've seen another live-streamer use a second mobile phone, watching their own stream, in order to have the chat displayed better. I don't know if that would be useful. Thanks Robert
@@robinfrench1914 Thanks Robin. That is a very sensible idea! I’ll try it. Then maybe I can stop squinting at the screen. I’ll do an Eastern-hemisphere livestream in 2 weeks and another Western one in Feb. Rx.
Well! Your analysis has explained why I've never been completely comfortable using this deck. I was gifted the original deck with the book and, like you, enjoyed the art, colour choices etc. Nevertheless my readings with this deck never felt "right" in the same way readings with other decks felt. I should note that it appears as though the original deck's cards are bigger than these and thus the details more clearly visible. Thank you for this, I shall start a "naughty pile" of my own 😂!
@@lindadegonzalez Everyone needs a naughty pile :-)
Great video! Was es nicht alles gibt... Gummibärchen Tarot ... bad air/not aired , wow, that's a major double insult for a German card reader UNGELÜFTET!!!!... a room that's "not aired well" - a NO GO for the nation of "Lüft- Nerds" ! And ungelüftet when talking about secrets or so means not uncovered/ not revealed...
@khan7459 Very nice! Thanks :-)🙏
Love this deck!
Thank you, that was a very nice review. These gummy bears have quite expressive little faces. Lecker-lecker.
I would agree, this does the job. ☺I do like the size too. BTW I have acquired an Ator deck (on your recommendation) and that one is very good too. Thank you! May I request more of your Tarot learning book recommendations? I have realized that I am looking for Tarot card insights that are neither predictive nor too directive (e.g."this card means that you must do X"), but are more like "consider this aspect of a human experience". If that makes sense? Thank you!
@@nacmegfeegle2310 I don’t know of a perfect tarot card insights. There are so many books and so much information. I always recommend Paul Huson’s “Mystical Origins of the Tarot” as my favorite round-up of card meanings. Alfred Douglas (“The Tarot”) is short and old-fashioned but he is quite good about the minor arcana. For court cards, I recommend my own 4 videos on the courts, which contain quite a lot of research:-)
@@teatarot4557 Thank you. Yes I regularly look up cards on your videos🌟
@@nacmegfeegle2310 Thanks for your message. I think my tarot book reviews are my most enjoyed videos and I’ll continue to draw them. But they’re a lot of work! X
😂 Best walkthrough ever of the Gummy Bear Tarot! I laughed so many times that my partner came from another room to see what I was watching. (This is the one and only video I've ever watched about this deck, but I have complete confidence in the veracity of my statement.)
@@sacredsortilege Thank you! Happy New Year :-)
8:10 Because gummy bear hands are stubby little paws. 🧸
