The Struggle - Flysurfer Hybrid 2.5 Underpowered Foil Session in the Surf
มุมมอง 1.5K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
An underpowered session in the surf with the Flysurfer Hybrid 2.5 Foil Kite. The wind was 18-20kts and decreasing and I would have to say this is the ultimate low end of this kite for me. I was unable to stay upwind and as you can see the entire session was a struggle. try the airwave alma. It for sure would have relaunched! I was almost jealous cus your marabou looks super nimble. But I'm glad you showed the hard and frustrating part of kiting in your video. By the way, you need to learn cutbacks on waves followed by an nice exit on the face;). Your videos have changed my boarding style. Thanks for sharing.

      @adventure-logs 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks, usually the swell isn't big enough to really do cutbacks and my bad leg most likely will yell at me lol. I'm also adjusting to the new 799 wing, I have a tendency to breach and lose lift. I just got a new stab thats a little looser to see if that helps. This 4m really is nimble for sure. People keep telling me to try the Alma and I would love to demo one if I could get my hands on it. Where I'm at when the water starts getting cold, the surface wind really goes down to nothing. That and the weird brake line tuck(which I'm pretty positive will go away once the bridle is broken in) just made the kite bunch up in a really strange way and there was no way to get a little wind under the canopy for the relaunch. I could have had more patience and waited but with it being a new kite, id like to get a couple more hours flying it before its get caught in the surf.

      @adventure-logs 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks! First session out in the surf with the 799. Been basically riding the 633 for the last several years. Bought the 799 this summer and got some lake session on it while I was up in MN. I'm also using a very deteriorated 310 rear stab with big winglets on it. 799 can go much faster, takes a little speed control if you are overpowered. Still very maneuverable but I would say a little less than the 633. If I carve it hard, I tend to breach the wing tip more which ends up losing lift and touching down(you can see me do it in this vid). I'm going to be buying a SAB reverse 395 stab to see if this helps. Definitely more glide than the 633 and since I want to start jumping I think it will suit me pretty well.

    Hey Jason, glad you were finally able to try the 4m! Watching the video and seeing how quickly the kite wanted to pinwheel, you were definately flying it a bit on the choked side. If you depower the kite a bit more you should get more of carving turn that stays more powered through the loop and actually feels a bit more grunty. Agree though that 4m is a really fun playfull size that is a ton of fun to throw around. Enjoy!

      Yea I know I just need to check the bar line lengths first. New bar with a different type of back line depower. I usually like to trim for slight back stall to help speed the turns up/spiral better but it was a little too much this session especially with the lighter wind. Fantastic kite so far and really looking forward to the next time I can use it!

    Hi Jason. I have a trim checker but cant find how the grey line and orange loop attach to the black movable line for A and Z . I understand while in tension you can let go the Z line and maintsins same length. Looking to exactly how grey attaches to black line to prevent slippage??? Tks

    • @adventure-logs
      @adventure-logs หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure what you are asking. You don't attach the greyorange loop to anything, thats there to show you when you have the proper amount of tension(5kgs) on the lines. You attach your kite lines to the two black hoops. Once attached, pull them till the orange LCL is stick straight out(that indicates proper tension) and verify that the A and Z knots line up. Then check your mixer.

    One good reason to learn to self land is that most times other kiters on the beach don't know how to assist landing a foil kite and make a mess of it by trying to catch it and lay it on the ground like it's an LEI..

      @adventure-logs 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really depends on what type of conditions you want it for. The 2.5m really is a high wind kite while the 4m will have more usable range. Also the Peak5 2.5m is unique on how it produces its powerspike to get up an foil. The conditions here in the video really is the ultimate low end for it.

    Thank you for the review! I agree, only more so! I was able to test an 8m (I'm 150 lbs) Marabou 2 in 6-8 knots. I'm a beginner/intermediate foil rider, it performed amazing, was significantly easier to fly and foil than my 9m contra 1 strut in the 8-10 knts. The Contr was a huge challenge to keep flying on a relative basis. The GIN Marabou2 even relaunched (with a little work) in that wind when the rep was flying it and foiling, fortunately I didn't drop it. I was so much more impressed with this kite than the flysurfer soul 8m I owned briefly. GIN Marabou 2 is simply one of the most under-rated light wind hydrofoil kites there is. I wish they could get more exposure and people trying them out so they could spread the word and be sure to stay in business and sell more kites. I've been planning to pick up an 8m as my go to lightwind foil and travel kite, but impossible to find. I hope they survive and thrive and keep making kites this dang good!

    What's the max wind speed you've foiled with on the 6m Marabou? I finally was able to go out an use my new Marabou and I was very very over powered. After looking at a local wind meter, it showed it was around 18kn and was gusting ~30kn. I was riding with kite fully depowered, bar all the way out, and at mock speed. It seems to have less depower than the hybrid, since the hybrid flaps when over powered, and I was expecting that. I need more time on the gin before I can form a real opinion on it. I haven't been kiting or kite foiling for that long. Probably a skill issue on my part.

    Thanks for the detailed review Jason. This post is a little off-topic, but may be helpful to people interested in the Marabou 2....Based on your earlier review of the 8m I bought a 6m and 8m Marabou 2 and just love these kites. I was a bit unsure paying out the money for kites I'd never flown but wow, I am delighted. The reasons they are so good for me is I can use them for twin tipping and foiling. For twin tipping they don't have the float of my Ozone Edge, but I can be out twin tipping on my 8m Marabou when others are twin tipping with their 10 and 12m inflatables. I can still jump, but not as high as with the Edge, but when the wind drops I can foil with the same 8m down to 10 knots (I'm not as proficient as Jason). This has allowed me to replace 4 kites with 2. Less gear to pack and unpack and no pump. I was flying Naish Boxers for foiling but sold them because the Marabou's are so good. In particular the Marabou 2 is very stable in the air. It doesn't dance around in gusty wind or backstall in light winds the way inflatables do. I also sold my much loved 13m Edge because I wasn't using it any more. Like the Peak these kites stay in the air in light winds when all inflatables are falling out of the sky - including the Boxers. They fly like inflatables so easy to use, however the water re-launch takes a bit of practice to understand what to do. After a few goes i worked it out and it is fine and very reliable. For me this is nirvana, a real game changer finally finding a kite for both foiling (which I do 80% of the time) and twin tipping! I have kept my Ozone Edge 11m for those days >20 kts for boosting in the surf. In terms of availability I agree they are hard to get. I live in Australia and had to get the 6m from Europe, but our Aussie supplier Derek had an 8m in stock. Just a comment on the bags.... the outside bag has an external pocket for the bar so you can still leave the bar attached, but not if you wrap the kite around it. By way of comparison to the Flysurfer, a guy who is often out with me has a flysurfer Hybrid and I am always on a size less then him and can hear him coming due to the flutter which the Marabou's don't have. It is quite clear to see them flying at the same time the Hybrid is much fatter both in terms of aspect ratio and thickness when inflated so I figure, together with the flutter, must be less efficient. Each to their own, he if very happy with his Hybrid and I'm stoked with the Marabou's. The next step to improve the foiling experience was to build my own bar. Here's how I built mine...th-cam.com/video/huD3RuuqYkE/w-d-xo.html Thanks Drew

    • @adventure-logs

      I highly disagree, I think the Marabou2 water relaunches extremely well and I prefer the way it relaunches over the Hybrid. You really can't reverse relaunch the hybrid which I think is a huge benefit of foil kites but the Marabou2 does very easily. Hybrid does one line relaunch easier though due to it's beachball shape.

    Great review @adventure-logs! RE the bridles I had the same thought when i first saw the bridle, then I realised there is a clever design of that level being smaller diameter, plus also there are more levels, not just A,B,C,Z attachments, all those little lines make more attachments on the kite which gives the single skin part more structure when the lines are tight. I was fully expecting all those lines to tangle and affect performance, but as you noted they ride amazingly well, all those little lines and the battens, the new cloth and all the little features add up an awesome little kite. Thanks for the great review!

For wind range of course manufacturer instructions should be followed, for my weight i choose sizes alma 6 and 8.

    • @adventure-logs
      @adventure-logs 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Peak5 6m WAS my favorite, it's quickly being replaced by the Marabou2 6m. The Peak5 is extremely agile, powerful for it's size, drifts extremely well, dynamic, and just plain fun. The only thing missing was the ability to relaunch. The Gins do everything the Peak5 does plus relaunch and you can actually jump it. The 6m just is the sweet size that has a huge range and useability.

    I had Marabou2 12m and did not like it. I don't understand why Gin has such a poorly designed bridle. There is no adjustment like a mixer test on Flysurfer, you cannot replace pulleys without cutting through the bridle lines. The bridle is permanently attached to the kite, so if you want to replace a single line you have to open the kite up, cutting threads or send it for repair. It’s a real pain in the behind. It’s a major screw up in my opinion.

    • @adventure-logs
      @adventure-logs 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with the no adjustable bridle, that needs to be upgraded but hell ozone JUST started offering one if you pay more. In my over a decade of owning Flysurfers I've never needed to use the LCLs to replace a bridle line and there's ways of reattaching without getting into the wing. The bridle does need to be cleaned up some higher in the levels. All in all though, it destroys the FS Hybrid in performance and agility and that's what matters most to me.

    When you walk with towards the kite keeping tension on all 4 lines, how come the kite doesnt' get power? When we kite we also keep tension in all the lines and the kite is fully powered. I thought the only way to kill power is to keep tension in only 1 line? would be nice to have an explanation how 4 lines tensin kill power?

    • @adventure-logs
      @adventure-logs 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      because you have shortened the rear/steering lines so the kite is essentially backstalled. Keeping tension on only 1 line will cause the kite to spin which will end up tangling the bridle lines.

  • @vaudou74

    reverse land it (leading edge to the ground), attacj the loop to the burried board and go to your kite. snowkite or sandy beaches work well ( safety : low to mid wind range of your kite)

    • @adventure-logs
      @adventure-logs 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely not! This would greatly increase wear on your kite and make damaging it more likely. Also unsafe since it will still produce a good amount of pull and any amount of sheeting in would increase that. Never land it on its leading edge!
