Euphonium Cam #11 | Holst Solo
I don't know what bonehead decided to make us play on that tiny cramped stage but it definately made my phone's terrible microphone even worse. Anyway, I totally nailed those two solos in the Holst piece. Can't say the same for the pianist in the third piece lol.

    Very informative and well-researched. I love the pictures of those weird vintage instruments (I am a collector myself). I used to play Cornet, Trumpet, then Tuba, then Euphonium. Now I play French Horn but also have a vintage Ophicleide (but did you know Wessex also makes them?) that I play for fun. You are right when you say it sounds especially good in the higher register.

    I have one remark about the Tornister tuba. As you mentioned, it also comes in the key of b-flat. However, having that type of tuba as the foundation of your orchestra isn't working (at least to me), due to it's small size. I myself am the proud owner of a Conn 25J, a large bore (0.773") instrument with a 23.62 inch or 60 cm bell. And believe me, the sound of it is just beyond fabulous. I'm able to literally give a broad bass-sound with ease. In my opinion a Tornister tuba is nice as a practice instrument in a hotel room. Easy to carry, but that's practically all.

    Appreciate the effort, but I think you glossed over the Brass Band explosion that has happened and is still happening around the world. This is where euphonium is king and has 100's of solos written for it. Military and Wind ensemble euphonium players tend to be stuck in a zone of adhering to mostly mundane and "simplistic" repertoire. However, in the brass band the euphonium players are world class soloists - even compared to the very finest instrumentalists on any instrument. Just to add - DCI should have no relevance when discussing euphonium because it requires none of the euphoniums actual range and tonal abilities. The euphonium is the cello of the brass world and should never be considered "utilized" properly in the same vein as marching band or DCI realms.

    When I explained to my girlfriend’s family what euphonium is, I legitimately said “You know the quiet part in Stars and Stripes Forever? That instrument.” Little did I know there was another march by Karl King that’s VERY focused on the instrument called “The Melody Shop”.

  • @sceu25
    @sceu25 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The Marching Euphonium did not come from the tenor bugle. They were completely different instruments. The Tenor bugle wasn’t even a tenor pitched instrument. It had the same exact length of tubing as any other G Soprano bugle at the time, with the only difference being that the Tenor bugle had a much bigger bore and bell, causing the sound to be much fuller. Later on, the baritone bugle was invented, and it was a true baritone voiced bugle, a whole octave below the Soprano. This however was still extremely cylindrical and had a small bell as pictured at 6:19 The “Bass-Baritone” went on to be a real Baritone Bugle, it had a slightly larger bore than a concert baritone, and usually had a bell flare and size similar to a concert baritone. In the late 50’s and 60’s, horn instructors wanted more color so the first G/D/F Valve/Rotor Euphoniums were made by Smith Music Sales and Whaley Royce. They obviously evolved to be changed to G/F/F#, then had two piston valves, three piston valves, and now are replaced with modern Bb Marching Euphoniums.

    16:15 the whole point of this minigame is to rely on your sonar in order to find the enemy sub. as soon as you center yourself to where the sub appears on the radar, search for a small trail of bubbles by zooming in scope and lead the shot to whatever direction, left or right, the bubbles are moving in. back when i played this with my siblings, it was in most case scenarios THE game changer aside from depth charges

    hey Brother, I saw you talking about the plastic Baritone and you were making a complaint about tuning, have you played with a tuner? Have you done the necessary steps to ensure you are playing in tune? (If so then great.) Brings me to me my point, Valve oil works wonders, pulling tuning valves when certain notes are played, use alternate fingerings and also More Valve OIL... Listen to the band and do not focus on your playing, listen to everyone around you. Peace and good luck too you.

    When I was 15 my parents bought me a Boosey and Hawkes Imperial Besson. This was identical to the Sovereigns of that period apart from the bell. It was £750 brand new! Soveeigns were about £1200 back then. I played it till I was 21 and fell in love with jazz, so I switched to cornet and trumpet. I am looking at getting a euphonium again, but there are a lot more options now than there were then. I think when I got mine there were no other compensating euphoniums on the market that were available to buy in the UK. Yamaha made four valve in line non compensating ones.
