I remember when you could actually kill your teammates in sdsw. Some people would actually name themselves things like "teamkiller" and slaughter their teams lmao.

this game stolle so many hours (sdsw) from me. it was one of my all time favorites and now and again i wish i could play it again

i must say i never played or even knew about the first steel diver, but i spent soooo much time on the second. i remember the highest level being 99 and one knew the players that reached that level and greeted each other in the lobby and stuff. subwars may have been one of the first games were i really played online multiplayer mainly. also until some years after i stopped playing it i knew the entire morse alphabet, which was quite a flex at my age back then.

For me it is the opposite. I grew up on SteelDiver 1 and only later found out wbout Sub Wars.

I remember I used to play it a lot & try hard & I remember how sort of infuriating it was that I had to pay as a kid to get superior ships
Periscope Strike was virtually the only thing I did on this game as a kid. I loved watching the ships sink from beneath the surface ✌
You had to be there to play steeldiver subwars. Playing it today is clunky and boring as many players either hack or are absurdly good. Grinding back then when it came out was just it's own beast and lies as one of my greatest memories of all time playing any online game.
I second this. SDSW and especially it's Miiverse page is some of the best memories I have on the 3ds.

I always have the sub wars icon song stuck in my head. I almost learned morse code from the chat system. So fun.
You can use the masker to stop the timed mine from exploding if you get near it.

Thanks for making this video. I had no idea this game existed but after getting a look of the mechanics I became kinda obsessed. It looks like a great use of the DS Hardwear, and seems like something I'd have loved as a kid

I haven't played the first one, only Sub Wars, and I remember really liking it in the day. I never really saw it as a "free to play game with paid $10 premium" but rather as a "$10 game with a playable demo". the extra subs you can get for 99 cents each are pretty good, but the regular subs you unlock much later on at higher levels outclass them (paying to increase crew capacity is BS though). And while the morse code mission was pretty stupid, I do remember having a lot of fun on the other missions like that last one with the battleship, learning to dodge its attacks and whatnot. Finding all the crewmembers in the missions and the ones in the multiplayer was fun to do, at least for me. And getting all the star medals for the campaign was a good challenge.
I do wish it had at least some semblance of a story, but overall I enjoyed it.
I guess what I remember most is sending "TO VICTORY!" in the lobby before each match. But yeah, mostly superlevelled experts playing it now so it's pretty unplayable.
Honestly forgot that sub wars even was f2p. I though it just had a demo or something. It’s gimmick was it was a proper real-time player-on-player game.
this is just... it just keeps making me happy when i see something like this. as little brat i spent 487 hours with the steel diver sub wars , and still, after all those years I sometimes switch my 2DS on and launch the game. both steel diver and sub wars are alive. people are still playing these games.
26:25 no, the CPU's are actually aimining and sometimes, when i was extremely low, they were able to kill me. Yes, watching the killcam of CPU just sitting there and shooting was and still is frustrating. and the supply ships aren't for free exp only, if you surface next to an allied ship, it will start repairing you. AND the coin thing about the "Fish Tank" map isn't the only unique game mechanic, this map also has the filter on the corners, and if you get close to them, they will start replenishing your air without surfacing, but there are tons of special game mechanics on the other maps
16:15 the whole point of this minigame is to rely on your sonar in order to find the enemy sub. as soon as you center yourself to where the sub appears on the radar, search for a small trail of bubbles by zooming in scope and lead the shot to whatever direction, left or right, the bubbles are moving in. back when i played this with my siblings, it was in most case scenarios THE game changer aside from depth charges
27:00 This is why I at some points learned Morse Code (not in the traditional sense, but at some point I just knew the combinations). So I guess SDSW can teach you morse code if you really feel like it.
I disagree with your review of subwars. That game was legendary to play back in the day and I'd argue that the free version was basically a never-expiring demo of the game, whereas the premium version was you actually buying the game.
The amount of strategies developed into the game really made it fun. I used to sink subs without even getting hit. I ended up getting a 67 Win-streak without using a secondary DS. I really miss the days where this game would have full lobbies :(
sub wars is actually one of my favorite games of all time. it was so fun and different from most pvp games
Well put together video. I love this game. It has a strange charm to me. If we have a loving dev team that can give the game the right love it needs. It could be great. But its just a dream for now.

Thx for making that video. That game deserves some love. Bought the game for 10 Euro cib when I bought my 2ds xl last year. Absolutely love the game. Bought the 2ds to play the pokemon games I missed out on, but instead I play steeldiver😅

I managed to rack up over 400 hours in sub wars (which actually isn’t too much but whatever) and never noticed any pay to win elements. You’d get Lv100 garfish players who’d be insane and Lv5 Z-class players who’d just sit there and miss constantly. And even for child me, £0.89 was affordable for a cool sub. Some games have £60 dlc for about the same amount of content.

The thing about Sub Wars is that it's more of a 10 buck game with a free demo instead of a F2P P2W game honestly.
I personally consider it more of a spin off instead of a direct sequel of Steeldiver, as well.

I had a ton of fun with this game when the 3ds was new. I never understood the hate. Sure , it’s underwhelming for a first party Nintendo game, but why not improve upon it and make another?

usually around night. i tried this morning and nobody was on, but around 9pm western i was getting full lobbies

@@karstengrenzig1821 Ahh thats unfortunate timing. I think around 10 would work for you too., ALso, im working with some people to stabilize the emulator so we can run SDSW on PC. This will make grouping up more convenient, as people can play from around the world with much less lag and in 1080p
