How Tough is B Grade Racing at Heffron?
Tune into another episode, where I find myself at the infamous Heffron crit track.
Heffron really showcased why it's known for creating absolute chaos - a night filled with surprises. Picture this, full gas efforts corner after corner, heart rate through the roof, and legs screaming to sit on someone's wheel. Welcome to crit racing, I guess?
Coming away with fourth place in my first B grade crit, I'll take it. It seems like sometimes you're the hammer, and sometimes you're the nail in racing. I learned so much about positioning, timing, cornering and overall race craft, like don't trust anybody out there.
Watch the madness unfold as I navigate my way through B grade racing, throw down some hard efforts and somehow scrape my way to fourth place. P.S. I'll be back for more.

The Reality of My First Race at Westhead
มุมมอง 4.8Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Tune into another episode - and this one's special. My first ever race at Westhead Road Race! I've been talking about racing for what feels like forever, and I finally bit the bullet and did it. Westhead Road Race was literally a last-minute decision (signed up the day before) and if I'm honest, it's not exactly the most favourable course for someone over 90kgs... Hey, heard you on the Nero show and have watched a bunch of your videos already. Glad to learn about your channel. One serious question for you, do you ever wear sunglasses? It’s kind of bumping me because I don’t think I’ve seen them leave your helmet yet, even in a video where you were complaining about getting something in your eye. Do you take them off to film yourself or do you just hate them? Dying to know. Thanks!
Oh, of course you put them on now later in the video. 🤣
@@mikewikstrom3416 Hey Mike, awesome you saw the show and came over to watch some videos! Thanks for watching. Funnily enough, it is super super rare you’ll see me put my glasses on. I bring them on every ride and half the time they don’t leave my head/helmet. It’s kind of a running joke in our group that I always wear them and never use them. That being said if I am descending at speeds I’ll typically use them, I used to use them a lot but feel my vision is better without them and now my eyes have adjusted to the wind. I wouldn’t say I hate them, I don’t think they are the most aesthetic glasses but I personally just don’t use them that much 🤷♂️ no idea why. Maybe if I they were smaller framed and had lighter lenses (not clear) I’d use them more. Hope this covers your question…. You’ll pickup on some weird traits watching my content 🤣🤣
thumbs up...see you at the Peaks 🙂
@@stevekovacs8635 thanks Steve! See you there mate, thanks for commenting 👍🏻
Cool video! Crit racing is definitely on my to do list! Cheers from Portugal!
@@CyclingAlgarvePortugal Thanks mate! Definitely recommend it, lots of fun. I’d love to race in Portugal!

@@high1458 thanks dude! I used to dislike it as a kid but it’s grown on me now 🥳
Hey Max! This vid of yours literally just popped up on my feed (well done!). Justin here; bumped in to you at CCACHE that Saturday when Sam was fixing your creaking BB! Subscribed!
@@ZenGarage hahaha how small a world is it! Glad one popped up for you mate. Great meeting you at CCACHE the other week! Thanks for subbing. P.S. you are taking me back to my youth with the ZenGarage account, 15 year old Max would be stoked 😂😂
Great effort Max! 4th on an unfamiliar course and first crit is impressive. Still got your sausage roll though😅
@@Draenyr thank you mate, it’s a tricky course to navigate too so happy with it. Hahaha I only just realised that I added in saussy roll content without noticing 😂😂
Good on you for trying something difficult and new mate, it's sure to inspire others to give it a crack too!
@@felixoates Appreciate that Felix! Only grow through trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone. Maybe I’ll see you at Heffron soon 😏
Despite road bike have gear n can switch between each gear doesn't mean someone can keep pedaling without stop cuz they also kinda exhausted, right?🤔😅 sry never ride road bike so I don't have any experience with that but I hope sooner or later I can afford to buy a road bike(entry level).🙌🏼✌🏼👍🏼❤️🇲🇾
@@nicksyahrilstorror5183 Hey Nicky, on a road bike if you stop pedalling (unless going downhill) you’ll most likely fall back quite far and not be able to keep up. If you are exhausted and stop I guess you are left on your own. I hope this helps! Good luck on finding a road bike, it’s great fun 👍🏻👍🏻
Great video. Random question from someone who is considering trying some crit racing: is the post-race sausage included in the entry fee? 😂
Thanks dude! Hahaha great question, I cannot confirm if every crit race includes a sausage, however this Thursday night Heffron included sausages and beers... well worth the entry fee. The post race asahi had to be the best beer ive ever had 😂
@@ItsMaxMann Sydney CC crits always include a BBQ and drinks for everyone present at no charge (your entry fees is put back into the crit event). Most crits don't have a BBQ....

Gotta be stoked with that result mate 🎉👏
@@Jonbsp Pretty happy with it, may not have caught the break but at least I held solid power in my attempt to 👍🏻 Thanks for watching mate!
Mate well done on having a crack ! I'd encourage you however to drop to C Grade to work on racecraft, a lot has to play in to your hands to win a bike race if you're not in a position to influence the outcome Drop down to C, which are usually the biggest fields and try different things - force a selection, go solo off the front, try multiple attacks, sit I and take a flyer, work on positioning ....riding to just hang on or not make a selection with almost the entire race to go is no fun. It's the fastest rider that wins, not the strongest I rode C Grade for as lomg as I could get away with it, win C Grade o multiple occasions i multiple courses in multiple scenarios then upgrade
Thanks Ben! Appreciate the feedback, may be a good idea to drop down although a lot of people said I’d be too strong for C grade. I did do my research before but as you said experience plays a big part not just strength and power. Thanks for watching mate!

@@janvanwezemael8571 great to meet you mate! Hahahaha you can take an excuse out of my book dont worry 🤣
Didnt realise it was you out there. Congrats on the first race. Keep note because its happened. If you cross the double line into incoming traffic they can DQ you. Especially if you have a manly club rider in the group they take note or warned. It will get more tidy as you move up the grades. Enjoy the racing, its addictive 🤙
@@ricardordg3443 yeh it was me. Were you racing in C? Haha I figured you technically aren’t meant to cross the double lines etc, the boys said just don’t do it before the cones 🤷♂️ thanks mate, definitely had a fun day and will be doing more 👍🏻
@ nah I bounce between a and b. West head is B. Good seeing you at the morning chop today 🤙 keep doing that and you'll be moving up grades quickly. Also learn to roll as a group at a faster pace smoothly.

@@julcerin Thanks mate! Good to see you again too, no doubt we will cross paths soon!
Okay i got 1 question if you climb a hill what gear ratio do you use? 🤔 Sry idk anything about road bike ✌🏼
@@minhari8040 great question, usually on a road bike you will shift into your small chain ring, my chainrings are 54/40 tooth with and 11-34 casette, however throughout this ride I typically stayed in the big chain ring so the ratio made the tension quite hard through the cranks. I hope that helps!
Fantastic debut Max, thanks for the early late attacks. Hope you got the WH RR bug and will be back to bash again soon!
@@qduong100 thanks bro! Nice to meet you mate, I’ll be back… next time with some strategy 😂
