I totally understand the sol ring sentiment but to me i find its one of the things that helps do one of my favourite things about commander: playing overcosted cards together. If i have that extra two mana just a little earlier in the game, my impossible jank combo or interesting synergy or even broadly unplayable card can actually have a chance to show itself off instead of wasting away in my hand for most of the game
8:32 both myself and and people some people I frequently play with are tournament Fighting game plays but super chill in edh, I guess that follows.
I feel like you're the only person (there is one other) who makes EDH videos that actually understands the function of the format.
Right now my ideal cool and spectacular win I wanna get at some point is one-shotting the entire table with a single Chandra's Ignition. Just get my commander up to 40 power via one-turn buffs (Scourge of the Nobilis + Legion Leadership, Geode Grotto + Legion Leadership, Scourge of the Nobilis + Geode Grotto, or Repeated Reverberation + Legion Leadership are some of my current ideas) and then cast Chandra's Ignition on her. Or use Thousand-Year Storm or Repeated Reverberation to make it copy itself a bunch of times so it doesn't have to get to one-hit kill levels of power. I dunno how fun that is because it's really demoralizing to be hit by Yes damage and die, at times (my first game, I got hit for 256 trample damage on turn 4 or 5…), but I hope it's at least a _novel_ win condition. (of course, I can also just spellsling with Fractured Realm + Thousand-Year Storm + Fiery Inscription and take out opponents via damage the slow way.)
Big fan of this. Chandras is a staple wincon in my Sauron the Dark Lord deck. In one game my orc army got killed repeatedly so I eventually just copied chandras 5 times and cast it on Sauron for the win 😁
@@BasedDeckDept Scourge of the Nobilis in particular is very funny because it gives my commander Lifelink, and since Chandra's Ignition says _she's_ the damage source I'll end up with several hundred life when she one-shots everyone's boards (including mine, which will consist of artifact creature tokens), just in case somebody survives. The deck in question is a Narset, Enlightened Master deck intended to replicate the general vibe of the Sky Striker archetype from Yu-Gi-Oh. What Sky Striker does is you have one magical girl with a bunch of cool transformations, which are mechanically Link Monsters that use her as material, and all of the archetype's spell cards only work if there is nothing in your Monster Zone. In other words, the Sky Striker herself has to either be off the field or in her transformed state (because Link Monsters are placed in a special zone separate from the Monster Zone) for the spells to work. Her transformations generally have effects that make spell cards better, and when they die they fish her base form out of your graveyard and onto the field (or maybe it was just into your hand, I forget which), primed for you to use a different transformation on your next turn and start bathing the field in missiles and lasers all over again. I'm using Narset because her ability to spam spells by attacking matches the transformed Sky Striker armours' theme of enhancing spell spam and matches the Sky Striker spells' theme of being special attacks used by the Sky Striker herself. Of course, not having blockers isn't very practical in Magic… but that's okay, because a lot of the Sky Striker non-offensive spell cards are themed as little support robots being deployed to do things, so it's fine for me to run token generators that make servos or thopters! And to replicate the theme of the Sky Striker _never staying down,_ even with Narset's high mana cost, I'm running a lot of treasure generation, so I can build up a reserve of single-use mana to bring Narset back with. Collector's Vault, Smothering Tithe (I got it in the promo booster in my first precon…), Monologue Tax, Shiny Impetus, and The Belligerent are all present for that purpose. There is, unfortunately, one creature card other than Narset in the deck presently, because I couldn't really pass up how good her token generation ability is. Narset almost only casts from exile, so Pia Nalaar making a 1/1 thopter every time a spell is cast from exile is really good. I wish I could find that on a non-creature card. I could replace her with Shark Typhoon, but the sharks aren't artifacts, which would hurt Geode Grotto's effectiveness… And sharks aren't nearly as flavourful as thopters. Aside from tokens and treasures, the rest of the deck is mana ramp, some topdeck fixing (borrowed my friend's Jace, The Mind Sculptor), stuff that improves instants and sorceries, and a bunch of instants and sorceries (including splashes of protection and removal, especially modal removal). There's a few things to make Narset harder to block, too, so she can attack to trigger her ability without her 3 power and 2 toughness getting her killed. Oh, and because Narset doesn't know what a mana cost is, another potential wincon is Fractured Realm + Thousand-Year Storm + any instant/sorcery + Repeated Reverberation + Explosive Singularity. That's 110 single-target damage to be distributed as I please in 10-damage increments.
Hey, I'm currently brewing a deck for Sauron, and I only have one other commander deck - precon Animated Army from Bloomburrow. I'm very curious about the necromancer route, what would you do/what are some cards that are just a "MUST include" in the deck? I like your deck as well so if there is any clear downside of going necromancer, please let me know!
Hey! Firstly thanks for watching! When you refer to the necromancer route, do you mean reanimation of creaturesnusing Sauron as an engine to stock the graveyard? Or do you mean abusing the army creation mechanic via sacrifice effects? My primary concern for both is that the must include cards are much more expensive so I don't see a good deck coating less than about $200. But that's a hot take
@@BasedDeckDept I'm trying to go more the reanimation route - bringing big creatures such as Balrog or Massacre Wurm from graveyard, utilizing tempting/sacrifice from sauron to cheat them into the graveyard and punish opponents with. I also like the idea of including stuff like Mirkwood Bats (another card I was gifted) and use that in combination with something like Goblin Bombardment to deal massive damage. Honestly I am not too crazy about price, I can take my time with building the deck and my pod is cool with proxies in the meantime (given I do not build a competitive EDH deck that just bullies everyone with 5000€ of cards in proxies). I'd seek to include stuff like Orcish Bowmasters too, seems like a good secondary engine next to sauron. In general, I quite like Jacob's Sauron Deck from Command Zone Game Knights #62 (can't post link). One thing I'd like to say is one of my friends is running an Eldrazi deck which is the current bogeyman of the pod and I'm aiming to beat him or at least consistently give him run for his money
He’s sooo good
He's insane
I have one firm belief about Commander. There is nothing being played that is more egregious than counterspells, targeted removal, board wipes, and -/- spells. If your table allows these things, then they should allow anything. Because there exists no infinite combo or other means of winning more dastardly than negative interaction spells. I simply cannot understand the duality of player sentiment. The hypocrisy runs so very deep. I'm hearing "avoid playing this or that kind of deck" ...while in the same breath, recommending removal cards. As if one somehow leads to less salt than the other. As a matter of fact, negative interaction cards shouldn't be allowed in casual Commander. Just learn to include cards that defend your board. Employ more evasion. Whatever. But playing spells that deny your opponents the ability to play at all is a cowardly approach....and far more "offensive" than anything you are interacting against. The hypocrisy is further illustrated in the community by use of the term "arch enemy". You sat down knowing there would be ONE winner and THREE losers. Somehow shocked and offended that one player dares to take a lead position. As if you were expecting a four-way tie? That opponent is only doing so well because three other players are not. That is NOT your arch enemy's fault. The number one mistake made by Commander players is to believe that the game should be "fair". Each player brings their own deck. Either a pre-con or one they built. That's the very definition of not fair. The only "fair" version of Commander would require four identical decks. Just think about that for a moment. There's a reason why 75% of all players at every table end up losing. The game is designed that way. There's only one winner. My point is stop complaining. Especially if your play group allows wipes and removals. The best defense is a good offense. You deal with the threat by becoming an even bigger threat. Not by adopting a victim mentality because your deck or your skills are lacking. My group plays three games on game night. Two casual and one full competitive. The first two allow no negative interactions in the decks. We also forbid tutors and fetches to even the odds. But yet, as we scarf down our pizza, we still accept the fact that one of us is going to win. That's the nature of the game. The third game is usually over by turn five. Don't bring a gun to a knife fight when the Goblin already has a grenade.
I like to build decks that can work with multiple commanders at once. My golgari deck was originally built around Meren, but is also designed to synergise with Grist, Beledros, Tevesh / Kodama, or Erinis / Scion of Halaster. I pick which commander I’m playing based on how strong my opponents decks are, with Meren being hard mode and Erinis / Scion being more friendly. I also have an Esper deck that runs about 10 commanders
I aspire to make a deck one day that my friends ask if I'd play again At the moment, my dimir zombies deck has some weird crap going on with it with numerous ways to repeat ETB's, I've got three cards incoming specifically, Cryptoplasm, Paradox Haze, and Misleading Signpost. Specifically looking at Misleading Signpost + Rogue's Passage for a 6 mana play where all of a sudden that supermassive creature someone was targetting me with gets sent towards someone completely unintended, and I get to continue being the biggest threat at the table for a few more minutes. Cryptoplasm + Paradox Haze, in that Cryptoplasm may become a copy of a creature I control every upkeep, so I can cheat out multiple ETB triggers through that copy effect. And even if I can't pull both for the combo, both still stand alone as a great card to get repeated ETB triggers like from Gray Merchant of Asphodel or Rot Hulk through Cryptoplasm, and Paradox Haze directly buffs my commander Scarab God.
The goal for all of us. Your zombie deck sounds like a good time
@@BasedDeckDept I hope so, I've only won like one game out of 10 with it so far and I've fully scrapped it like twice
Thank you so much for this video
Thank you for watching ❤️❤️
One of the best commander videos I’ve seen
❤️❤️❤️
This is why Arc System fighting games are so appealing to me, the Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear guys. Every time I play it's like "I'm getting my ass beat but DAMN it looks cool!"
Any opinion on best art of the year? I loved Villarrte's Oltec Matterweaver, by far favorite art in a while! At least not counting borderless and secret lair type stuff
$60 goes to the commander
Alas
I would also add a lot more untapped synergy pieces, this deck is really an engine when you can activate baba multiple times per turn. There are a plethora of 1 cmc untap spells in green which also buff!!
I would replace e witness with gloomshriker, strictly a better card. Same cmc, recurs a card and has is two permanent types: enchantment creature. Also slightly cheaper!!
The way I see it is: Normal magic formats are quickly becoming the Yu-Gi-Oh tcg. Commander is players trying to recreate the Yu-Gi-Oh television show.
Went to my first game night at my LGS last Friday and had a blast in the first couple games I played. Everyone knew I was new to commander and revolved the decks they played around mine, and we were laughing, had some funny shit happen, it was a fucking blast, but the third game of the night, 2 of the guys in my pod were straight up neck beard discord mod type mfs, so I had a really bad feeling. They didn’t announce their decks at all or ask what me and the guy next to me were playing, you could just tell they had a superiority complex and were there to win like their lives depended on it. One of them wheeled the table turn like 4 then played a card that “whenever an opponents casts their first spell each turn, they reveal the top card of their library, you may play it for no cost” type effect, and I almost just scooped, but I didn’t because I was really just trying to test my deck and how it draws and stuff despite knowing I couldn’t make a comeback. The same guy started getting salty when me and homie next to me were targeting him, and the other neckbeard was building a scary board state. I literally just tilted my head and talked my shit calmly. “Didn’t you wheel us all on turn 4? What do you actually expect me to do with my fucking vampire deck? You’re stealing everyone’s shit, I’m on 1 card in my hand, fix it your self. Who the fuck are you?” And he got soooooo fucking salty when homie next to me was backing me up (they all knew each other) and I spent the rest of the game trying to ally oop the other neckbeard (though playing a pretty sweaty deck, he was actually pretty chill and wasn’t trying nearly as hard to dominate the table) to beat the other guy. Which he did end up doing to me and homies relief. The wheeler was so fucking salty, and honestly, that made me feel a lot better about the game despite not being able to literally do anything. My vamp deck is definitely fun, but it made me realize that if I’m gonna be playing with the lgs crowd, I have to build at least a deck or two that can deal with the virgin sweats like him who only care about winning. So now I have both a Tasigur, and a toxrill deck list I plan on building and pulling out specifically on occasions where i need a toxic ass deck just to be able to compete with the table. I like the philosophy on fun commander, but that experience made me realize that’s really only an option when you’re friends with the people you’re playing with.
Discord invite is expired for some reason?

Imagine putting Apocalypse into your deck
😂😂😂
One of my greatest ever commander moments was shooting off 3 boardwipes inside the same opponent's combat step (myojin facilitated) because his deck was so resilient. I stopped his win and killed him on my next turn.
Based
Nice video, it much better explains the questions I , as a new player, had left over from your previous video; know what mindset to build a deck with instead of don't put these unfun cards in your deck.
Glad you enjoyed it 🤜🤛
Are you like me and hate when other people have fun. Me: yes
My goal every commander game is to deck myself and lose. If I don't get to touch all 100 cards it isn't fun
8:00 I used to have that happen all the time. but i had no idea what was going on, i just had a pile deck with prossh because big dragon look neat. everyone started claiming i was going to go infinite any turn now with combos i've never heard of
🫂
my favorite deck to run right now is a fae deck that has as many cards like "tempting contract" that i can find. I want to make deals, i want people to benefit from being my friend and interacting with me. It has the capacity to have an instant win con, but i often don't pull it out even if i have it in hand. I want the interaction, i want to push the power from player to player. Then in the end? well maybe they learn why you shouldn't make deals with the fae.
Based
Wholeheartedly agree on pretty much everything said here. There is a little bit of me that wants to say that it is all rather subjective though. The point about disliking decks with a lot of stax and very slow wincons is one I'm not fully behind. I dislike the opposite a lot more. Very slow decks allow all the other decks to breathe, go through a sizeable portion of their cards, be okay with not having immediate answers cause time will allow for stuff to happen. To me, fast aggro or combo decks are much more likely to make for a bad time. Aggro will likely just arbitrarily rush someone out of the game first, and sitting around watching other people play is no way to play commander. Very quick gamewinning combos are no fun for 75% of the table either. My own rule on these is that if you do run a deck like that, at the very least show us your combo before the game, so that we know what to watch out for. A "gotcha" turn 5 win is just about the lamest way for a commander game to end imo. My favourite deck by far to play with, against, and lose to, is my friend's Zedruu deck. It is very slow, very staxy, very group-huggy as well, playing tons of stuff that he can give away that either benefit all, or are equally to the detriment of all players, or specifically slow down someone who's running away with the game. The games with this deck on the table are always the ones we'll refer back to the most.
Thanks for watching 🤜🤛 I agree, at least in the sense that people likely want play experiences they expect and that extreme outliers be that extreme aggro, combo, or stax that they don't expect can make for a bad time. A well thought out and interesting deck like Zedruu and a pod that's up for it is a recipe for a great time. I've made related points in other videos focused more on play than deck building.
What do people have against long games? The point of games is fun, if a match takes longer, you have fun for a longer time. I just had a 6 hour commander match a few weeks ago and I personally loved it, was very well balanced and a nice back and forth with tons of interaction. Shows who actually crafts the most resilient deck in the end. I totally agree though: board wipes need to be deployed well planned and not randomly. I only use them when I know I will be the person who will benefit most from it
As long as the table is up for an experience like that, no problem 🤜🤛 in most cases, that's more time than I have for a commander session let alone a game 😂 and in my experience most people leave long games very drained rather than happier than when they sat down. You reference the 6 hour game, and I'd be curious if all 4 of you loved it and if not, how many outside of you loved it. That's not to invalidate your experience, but again my observation points to that being the exception not the rule.
No I'm here to remind you that magic can be miserable and to bring back mana burn
How I miss mana burn and combat damage going on the stack...
I just really want farewell banned, braindead card, should have been pick one effect.
Let’s go Melek!!!
What do you think about adding some other combos here that are also easy to use in this kind of deck like Brain Freeze + Lotus Petal + Underworld Breach or Dualcaster Mage + Molten Duplication and add some cool value creatures to duplicate, like Archmage Emeritus, Storm-Kiln Artist and spell cost reducers? Will that dilute the core gameplay too much or is that actually a good idea to have a plan B?
My personal take is that a laser focus is the best path for this deck to take. Adding in option B's adds more cost to the deck, and as you say, dilutes it. I'm the very unlikely situation that my twisted fealty gets exiled, I'd rather admit defeat than slowly try to stumble towards a cobbled together plan B

I feel like this could’ve been a really cool 1hr+ long video with more analysis. Just reading off the cards for 14min seemed to fall flat for me. I don’t have to time to pause the video and read the cards, I prefer if they were just read off to me. It’s still an interesting concept tho! Sorry if the criticism was too harsh 😅
Not at all! I appreciate the input a lot. I had the same thought so it's good to know that's correct. Will likely try some follow ups in each of the categories ❤️❤️
I agree with what Kanyda commented. I need some more indepth analysis. But i will add that its nearly impossible to make the video short, and long at the same time. Maybe this could have been a multipart series? You divided it into categories yourself already. These could have been different videos, and then this video could have been a summary for those videos. I know theres a lot of work in making multiple videos, but i really want this channel to hit main page for magic!
Thanks friend, yeah I had the same thought. This video has, if anything been a good lesson for me. I agree with everything. ❤️❤️
In my group of friends we all have a characteristic deck type There's the mono Dragons, Hydras (my gf), mutants, dinosaurs, vampires, elfs, spellsingers, adventures and me struggling to make my dimir zombies work since I'm still a noob But it's always fun, loosing too much like myself can be boring, but most of the times it's fun It really feels like playing the combat part of an RPG, and it's great ~ We have a group rule that the players starting later than the first one have a scry 1 to 3 (in a game of 4), so the starting player doesn't get a very unfair advantage
I love that you love Izzet 💧🔥
I am nothing if not a filthy control player at heart 😭😁 and casting huge silly spells is definitely a guilty pleasure
Same 🤩
There was a game I played a while ago where I had two nicol bolas planeswalkers and one another one that could add loyalty counters to them, one of them was a one sided board wipe and the other one had a -8 that made opponents lose if they didn't have any legendary creatures or legendary planeswalkers, so I board wiped and immediately won, and was probably one of the few times I've played where a board wipe felt good
Based
I didn't really care for this video. I don't know every card printed and you just say some card names then say who the winner is. There's no analysis on why the card is the best card. Just that it is. Maybe I don't understand the point of the video but when the algo recommended it to me I thought I would get a cool video where you explain why you like a card that wins the category which I think is cool.
Yeah I think that's very fair
Yeah I think that's very fair. I was trying to not make the video 45 minutes long, but in hindsight breaking it into several shorter videos or making one long one and giving reasoning would have been better. A good lesson for me
@@BasedDeckDept I run a youtube channel on another account so I know how hard it is to break through which is why I gave honest feedback. I'm glad you took it for what it was. Hoping to see more good stuff from you!
Bloomburrow had a lot to offer for commander players, and the art was great, but as a limited set, it was not very good. Blue and Red were underpowered, with the Izzet otter deck in particular being downright unplayable, and it’s so focused on its signposted creature types that once you focus on a single two color pairing, the set practically railroads you. I do appreciate that it brought so many new players in, but I doubt the format they were playing was draft.
Yeah I definitely agree it forced certain lines of play a lot in that environment. Other sets like thunder junction seemed to have a far better draft environment
I would add an ozolith to the mix as well
Definitely a good upgrade option
No love for Gisa the Hellraiser? Perhaps control is not that based.
Gisa is fine, but limited in the fact that you really have to build her a particular way. Is she bad? Not at all? Is she my favourite? Not at all! 😁
Last time i played commander only 2 of us really had boardstates and the gisath player kept swinging at me to the point id lose if he connected again. I noticed this and immediately set up a way to remove his commander. While i agree, to him i was the only threat at the time, i made it clear i would remove his commander and they just wanted the threat of his commander gone.
I will be having strong words with you about Alexios. Players should not be bullied by not knowing the rules.
Huh
Bloomburrow "in-universe" yea sure 😂
I'd be really interested to see your take on an Anhelo, the Painter deck. :)
Another one for the list, although I imagine it will be a while till I get there 😁
Your videos keep matching my thoughts - curate experience, cultivate fun, and make memories! While listening to this one I was compiling artifact lists for Oswald Fiddlebender and Arcum Dagsson, and it hit me: Lantern Control............Group Hug ?! Build around the lantern control shell and help curate game experience/flow via give and take deck manipulation rather than strictly ruining players' draws. Oswald can have that online pretty rapidly. Arcum probably has the higher ceiling + being blue. "Yes, you can have that Protean Hulk, but you know I just drew Teferi's Protection. Plan accordingly." "I know what so-and-so is about to do with that card. If you don't attack/kill me right now, I'll make them mill it." "I'll activate this Pyxis and put it all into play to get us back up and running after that boardwipe." "Don't worry, this Static Orb is temporary - keeping us alive from the archenemy until so-and-so draws that answer." I *think* stax pieces can be fun used this way. I'm willing to try. Finally a clear home for a card I think is heavily underused in general: Glasses of Urza. See what people have/need, and yap respectfully/responsibly lol. The ultimate game of information. New rabbit hole to dive down!
I'm interested to know how this goes 🤜🤛
I'd add Season of Weaving to your big list of better board wipes! It works wonders in my Geralf the Fleshwright deck, where the tokens he produces are your wincon (and don't get bounced), and it can set up future popoff turns with the other stuff you bounced.
🤜🤛
Unlike in real life, tax effects are very cool actually.
Said the tax man... 😂😂
