Wait, people build Sauron and DON'T go to Flavortown by putting in as many Amass cards as feasibly possible? Next you'll tell me that they don't see the obvious synergy of his Draw 4 ability with that new Mindless Conscription enchantment that has Amass 3 each time you draw a third card each turn.

Playing a flavour deck in a pod where 3 people are not playing the same game is the quickest way to find yourself in a power level arms race. Flavour is valid, and I have many a flavour focused deck. This however, is not one of them.
Given this is a budget deck, it definitely is win on our terms. That said, fun was the leading reason to build this, not winning.
@@BasedDeckDept yup, Im have this experience now. We collectively just got back into MTG about 2 months ago. And we have 2 people who arent used to the power creep of the game and arent on are same level as me because they want to play flavor decks.

I built my sauron a little heavier on the amass subtheme using the war of the spark cards that give the army keywords such as flying or trample, adding sac outlets that benefit from a tall army to get value in case I cant swing with my army (Shadowheart, Ghoulcaller Gisa) and keeping some light LOTR flavour as I'm a huge fan of the franchise. Will definitely take a look at this take on Sauron, I've been thinking about switching to a more reanimator focused build but I can't bring myself to let go of the LOTR Flavour and the uiniqueness of an amass-focused commander build
I like the different build to Sauron. I would like to see more specific highlights as it's hard to see what you're doing with the deck in a phone screen, but I get the idea. Definitely a neat way to build it
This gave me some good insight on my Sauron deck, which primarily focuses on using the amass triggers as aristocrats fodder. I mostly just ignore the bottom half of the card, but weaving in some ring tempt for the card draw would probably be a huge upgrade for the deck.

I built Sauron like that, but he kept winning with the orcs as combat because I ran enough removal/protection.

I went for a slightly different build of flavour town- I just played cards that I think Sauron would have played- so like cruel ultimatum, omniscience, the court monarch cycle and just a bunch of fun overcosted but flashy cards- the deck works fine for lower power and gets to be a fun but ultimately clunky deck that I just have a great time with- love your work on this list though and it makes me want to try and make a storm build with sauron-

One point for editing: it would be good to show the cards on screen as you mention them so people don’t have to tab and look them up as you discuss them. I like how you highlighted them in the decklist to show their concentrations, but doubling it with a cutaway or overlay to show some or all the cards mentioned, in full with name, art, and text, will add to the readability (and thus engagement) of the video.
Regardless, that was an excellent primer on a frankly much better Sauron build than most I’ve seen! Keep up the good work, man!

Very cool video. My sauron deck runs 9 nazguls aswell as a lot of ways to give my big beaters evasion. That can be my nazguls or the army. Also I naturally run some fling variants

Hey, from one group arch to another, I say you need to have fun with it. Being the big bad creates pressure to grow, brings more out of your fellow players.
I can definitely appreciate this If anything I see it as a fun reason to explore building various decks than a real problem
I made Sauron as Grixis Wheels.
Run all the Nazgul, and cheap reanimation spells to cycle through my deck.
The game usually ends with me using a mass reanimation spell and draining the table.
It's a little evil... And that is on flavor

Can you explain which cards you would replace with the "Key Upgrades" ones? (If you suddenly decided to up its power level). I'm very indecisive when it comes to that.
It depends exactly which cards, but you can for the most part swap out something similar. Swap out You Find the Villain's Lair and Unwind for Swan Song and Fierce Guardianship. Swap out swamps for the nonbasic black lands, and swap out Mizzix Mastery in favour of Lier. Bowmasters if you have it can probably replace some removal like Dark Withering

My Sauron list is a control one that focuses on making act of treason cards good. It plays lots of card draw, removal and counter spells, and then a couple sac outlets as well as conjurors closet and thassa which allow you to keep stolen creatures. Sauron provides a good beater to get in damage, sac fodder and a bit of draw if I really need it.
Would love a deck list, I'm trying to get Sauron Dark Lord as close to full control as possible with Amass as the win con, either through straight damage with some light combo.
As someone who upgraded the other Sauron precon and Rand it with this Sauron to dissatisfying results I definitely think this brew seems more promising and I will be looking to it for inspiration!

Very nice deck, though I was wondering why didn't you add March from the Black Gate? Seems like a good fit here.
Thank you! Glad you liked it. March from the black gate is great, but it doesn't synergize with our graveyard or spell slinger strategies at all, and more importantly, combat damage is our secondary win condition, so this card will do nothing, or be quite slow 99% of the time since we are typically hiding behind our orc army and need it as a blocker.
Hey, cool vid! I'm using his amass ability as aristocrat fodder, while it is cool when people at the table can't cast spells without losing 6 life, it's incredibly incosistent and undermines ring temptation ability. I'm going to add the 9 Nazgul, althought keeping aristocrats foundations, anybody got any tips?
i feel like a boogeyman aswell, ive had a Reaper king player hold up a shapeshifter he could use to delete Felidar retreat of the Duskana, the Rage Mother and counter my Birthing pod which i wanted to use to search up enchantment removal to delete it from existance. He held his shapeshifter almost the entire game and casted it later into protection once we were alredy all dead facing Stampede of 11/11 cats and bears just becuse he was afraid of me doing something.
Did you test this deck? How many games did it win? How did it perform? In what pods?
Yeah I did. I've played the deck a whole bunch. Too much to go into detail of different pods, at varying deck strengths, but the win rate is high, winning at least half the games I've play with it. The deck is very resilient. I've pulled out a win copying chandras ignition 4 times and using Sauron as the target.

I feel like in any pod possible there is no reason to go in on the amass subtheme. You already have a managorger hydra when on earth is that not the biggest creature. I feel like the discard/wheel theme is much better. Run madness and madness enablers. Then have the evil cards like archfiend of ifnir to truly feel like the big bad at the table
I feel like if you want to go the spell route saruman is a way stronger commander. I'd probably go the reanimation route with sauron personally
Having played both, I think they're fairly similar, with different strengths. I think reanimation Sauron is great, and fun, noting there's almost no chance it's a $100 deck.
no board wipe? and im not seeing an answer for artifacts either i got hit in a 4 player game with ensaring bridge
Widespread Brutality, Immolating Gyre and Chandras Ignition all wipe the board, noting that the only time a board wipe is typically needed in this deck is when someone goes very wide. 95% of the time a 10/10 or bigger orc, and a 7/6 Sauron means people don't want to attack into you. Then as for artifact removal. That's true, but most artifacts don't hinder our strategy too much. In the case of Ensnaring Bridge, we don't need to attack, as we can easily end the game with our primary win conditions in Chandras, Gravitic Punch, or Soul's Fire.
@@BasedDeckDept thank you that is fair, really appreciate the response as I dont contribute the time needed to learn new cards sigh... im old, im just checking out the dan-dan deck and im soooo intrigued a 25 year long magic friend told me about it on shuffle up and play prof/brian had rhystic studies on his show to show it and it looks fun. I used to be pooperdix ( pauper decks ) but changed my channel name to pirate homebrew and gaming.

Boardwipe tribal is such a bad time. Hopefully your friend decides they like having friends more than they like having boardwipes
Is the one ring not good with sauron? and/ or omniscience (im new)
The One Ring and Omniscience are good in general, but I wouldn't say they are good with Sauron specifically. They can of course be added, but the one ring is very expensive and costs almost as much as this whole deck 😂 Omniscience is very slow, but could work well if we get it into play.

@@CrapsGoodxD Yeah look if you already have it, the one ring will make any deck stronger And yeah unless it gets banned, the ring is surely a good card to have.

I went full flavour on my Sauron deck, and it was TERRIBLE. Easily my worst deck, despite the big expensive cards. This seems like a great re-tool of it. I'm keeping my Nazgul tho.
Have fun rebuilding your Sauron deck I have a nazgul deck with Lord of the Nazgul in the command zone. I think there's a high likelihood that I'll take it apart and make it a Sauron led nazgul reanimator build which I'll make a video about.

Alright I'm a random dude on the Internet that doesn't make videos and your video popped up on my for you page.
It's really hard to follow the video because your word pacing is so awkward. You constantly pause in the middle of the sentence like there's a period then continue a moment later. It's really distracting and I think you have a great voice for narrating and discussing mtg stuff, but read the sentence in full without pausing every 3-4 words. I'm gonna write an example and use periods to represent the paused to better explain what I'm saying.
Saurahn is a cool. Commander to build. He can. Be played in many ways. I chose. To make big orc. Get big. By focusing on. Voltron. This helps. Trigger our commanders. Ability.
Shit example but hopefully it helps fix the audio pacing.
