Video 4. Impacts and Examples of Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs)
มุมมอง 173วันที่ผ่านมา
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) threaten the health of people, animals, and aquatic ecosystems. Toxins produced by HABs can have minor to life-threatening health effects and the increased costs associated with HABs may be in the billions of dollars. HABs can also be detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. This video explores the impacts of HABs and provides examples of HABs in Florida.
Video 2. How Algae Live and Grow
มุมมอง 253วันที่ผ่านมา
Algae vary in size from microscopic to large enough to see with the naked eye. Microscopic algae live dispersed in the water or grow as a mat attached to surfaces beneath the water. Macroalgae are large enough to see with the naked eye and grow attached to surfaces beneath the water or float freely. Algae require sunlight, water, select nutrients, and carbon dioxide to grow through photosynthes...
Video 3. What are Algal Blooms?
มุมมอง 161วันที่ผ่านมา
Algal blooms are a rapid overgrowth of algae that occur under certain environmental conditions. Algal blooms are considered harmful when they negatively impact ecosystems and people’s health. Ample levels of nutrients including nitrogen and phosphorus plus favorable weather conditions can trigger an algal bloom formation. This video explores the environmental conditions that support an algal bl...
Video 1. What are Algae?
มุมมอง 273วันที่ผ่านมา
Algae are a large and diverse group of organisms that use the sun’s energy to grow through photosynthesis. They occur naturally and are an essential component of a healthy aquatic ecosystem; however, an overgrowth of algae can be harmful. Scientists estimate that there are hundreds of thousands of different algae species. This video introduces six major types of algae that differ in their appea...
Introduction. Understanding Algal Blooms in Florida
มุมมอง 416วันที่ผ่านมา
Devastating algal blooms have topped Florida headlines during the past few years. However, algal blooms are not a new problem, and the documented cases of algal blooms are on the rise around the world. Harmful algal blooms are a growing concern for the public and decision makers. This video series focuses on different algae topics and can be viewed individually or in order: - Video 1. What are ...
Solar Generator vs Fuel Generator Comparison
มุมมอง 45010 หลายเดือนก่อน
Comparing generators - solar vs. fuel Having a solar generator during hurricane season provides advantages over other options for keeping the power running during an outage. Fuel generators are loud and require gas, diesel or propone that can be difficult to find after a major storm. Storing fuel and maintaining the machines pose additional problems. In contrast, solar generators are quiet, low...
Why Use Solar Powered Generators?
มุมมอง 23010 หลายเดือนก่อน
Researchers at the Center for Environmental Studies (CES) at Florida Atlantic University are compiling a solar supply kit that aims to provide security to vulnerable communities during events where usual electricity sources may be lost. Solar generators are a clean, safe alternative to fuel-powered generators. CES researchers are working to raise awareness of alternative portable energy sources...
Setting Up A Solar Powered Generator
มุมมอง 11210 หลายเดือนก่อน
When hurricanes cause power outages, solar generators provide a way to keep the electricity running in your home. Solar generators are a clean-running option, unlike gas or propane generators that emit toxic fumes and must be kept outside. And setting up a solar generator is easy, with just a few simple steps needed for the device to be used to power home appliances. Florida Atlantic University...

Home & High Water S1 E3. Why Do We Care About Our Salt Marshes?
มุมมอง 333 ปีที่แล้ว
How do we value an environment? This is a question scientists and economists have been studying for decades through what's known as ecosystem services, a term researchers use to describe what ecosystems provide to humans. But, what about the things that aren’t quite as tangible? What if there are ecosystem services that the market doesn’t put a price tag on? What if those services are so fundam...

How about the levee on the north side of the 11 mile stretch of the Tamiami Trail? Is that coming down to allow the water flow, or we going to depend on the canal between the road and levee? Doesn’t the levee defeat the purpose of natural (as it once was) water flow southward?

Great work guys. Hope there will be more follow-ups to this! Water moving in straight lines is usually a bad thing. Wood jams, beaver dam analogs allow the water table to raise and soak into the nearby lands. Has that been a part of your project as well?

If this is cleaning up Florida's waters, how come I saw corals and hundreds of fish in Biscayne Bay in 2017, but found nothing but dead coral covered in algae and almost no fish when I went back in 2019? And who should I blame for the antibiotic resistant bacterial infection I got from swimming in Biscayne Bay? Three people died of this in just the week I was hospitalized.

To whom it may concern ,,,,, Wow , you didn't mention that the C-38 , ruined Lake Okeechobee . I know , I watched it happen . The fecal matter from the cattle that the Graham family owned , flowed into the lake . This canal was pushed through to only help a few very rich land owners with no studies done of the consequences . It broke my heart to watch a lake I had fished from the age of 10 years , be destroyed by the time I was 30 . Growing up in the Everglades , the levees and flood gates screwed up a perfect place . FCD , WM , and the ACoE , love to pat each other on the back , but truth be told , what the hell were they thinking . Mother Nature had it right in the first place . Now millions upon millions of tax dollars were wasted . And why ? Could have left well enough alone .

Well done, a great job of describing a few CERP projects. It's to late for Florida, no amount of money and projects can save the state. Environmentally, the only thing that can save Florida is to reduce it's population by 1/2 and outlaw golf courses, AC and mosquito control. Problem Solved!
