A 40 year wait to do this with my original ZX Spectrum from Christmas 1984
On Christmas day 1984 I received this same 48K ZX Spectrum. 40 years on to the day, I finally get to try out something with it I have never done before.

To be able to use that socket and running a game from cartridge like that on the Speccy is quite something! 40 years in the making! :)
Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked it. Happy Christmas ⛄
:o)
The compression on that muzak.....aaaaargh !
Apologies for that
I got my 128+2 speccy with a joystick, Soldier of Fortune and Fire&Forget, just a few months before christmas. At the time, it was being sold here just a few quid short of a minimum wage, and my dad was the only one working due to my mom doing chemotherapy. During that time I hardly saw my dad for almost a year because he was doing overtime in construction even on weekends. I can not even imagine the effort he made to make it possible, having to support a house of 4 and paying for experimental treatments. I don't remember if he got anything for me and my brother on that christmas, but we already had what we wanted, really. I still have it, and just waiting for a full refurbish, which I will do as soon as my workbench is free for a couple of days.
What an awesome story. Thanks for sharing that 😊 Have a wonderful Christmas and new year
I remember sending off £125 for my Spectrum (16K) in 1982 then later upgrading it myself to 48k. It was known as an Issue 1.5 (rare) meaning it had the Issue 2 Pcb with the original 5C102E ULA and the dead cockroach IC stuck to the top of the Z80.
I wonder how many of the 16K models stayed as 16K. Not many I suspect 🤔 Thanks for the comment and have a great Christmas and new year
@@RetroComputingReboot I've got a 16K Spectrum, and a 32K Cheetah ram pack for it!
@trance_trousers I forgot you could upgrade the 16K with a RAM pack
I wish I still had my original Speccy, I have my QL and highly upgraded Amiga A2000 but have no idea what happened to my last Spectrum. My dad (a Snr Systems Engineer) made me learn BASIC and tested me before I was "rewarded" with a 16K ZX Spectrum in 1982 and Planetoids was the first game I got for it, I only played it for a bit of nostalgia using Fuse this Tuesday. He made me learn BASIC to encourage me not to use it just for games and I've been a professional Software Engineer since 1987 working on the code for avionic systems such as the Head-Up Displays (HUDs) for C-17, F-16, F-5, Eurofighter Typhoon and the fly-by-wire (FCC) for Boeing 777, all thanks to my dad and my humble Spectrum. "From little acorns..." as they say, but I never had an Atom, Electron or BBC Micro 😉
Great story! I'm very fortunate to still have my Speccy. It got put away when I finally got my Atari ST. But me being as I am not being able to part with anything, it went back in it's original box, just waiting to be loved again 😊
I have many fond Speecy memories although not relating to Xmas. There was the time at my job during a lunch break, (I worked in a TV repair workshop so there was loads of TV's to try it out on) one of the guys showed of a new fangled thing called a ZX Spectrum and over the course of the week the guys tried to complete the Hobbit and failed. At the end of the week I was hooked and purchased my own Speecy and a copy of the Hobbit and solved the game over the weekend (more by luck than skill, they kept getting killed in the forest by the spiders, I had a brainwave and tried waiting before moving and it worked), so I saved at the point where you put the treasure in the chest and completed the game. The following Monday lunch time I smugly showed the guys I had completed the game before any of them! Another memory, is that I had being trying to go out with a girl at work and eventually took her on a first date. At the end of the evening I persuaded to come back to my flat and to my eternal shame I spent the night playing Horace goes skiing with her!! Unsurprisingly, the relationship with her never went any further. Changing the subject, are you limited to just 16K Rom images with the cartridge or can you put other games on it. Happy New.
Thank you for this video. I just picked one up for some projects I have in mind and made my decision based off this video
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you liked the video and it motivated you. I hope you liked the T shirt in the vid 😂 Merry Christmas and a happy new year 🕛
i liked your video and ypur christmas story about the spectrum and you mom! thats awrsome.!my favorite was1982 mom worked very hard and got me a colecovision!! my favorite christmas ever!! i live with mom to help her out with things. i love mom! and i bet your moms happy she has a good son!merry christmas simon!
Hi Mike, I really liked your story. A very merry Christmas to you 🎄
I guess that device only works with 16k games? I've never seen a 48k game on rom.
I suspect you're right there. I'm not completely sure. However, you can get modern recreated rim images from tape files such as Jet Set Willy which must be over 16K. Perhaps someone else knows? Good comment though, thanks. Have a great Christmas and new year
@@RetroComputingReboot yeh you are limited to 16k images as if you tried to to access a higher memory address with the cart it would cause problems / corruption . but there are more ROMS available that have been adjusted to run as 16k and there are other options of using bank switching and altered snapshot files to load a 16k bank into ram then switch bank and load another 16k but needs a little hardware + coding. i did try it on a breadboard manually switching the ROM page which to my surprise worked .. some boards use a resistor /capacitor delay to switch the bank page after a short time ..
Cool build. I do need a ZX Interface 2 now 😉 Merry Christmas !!!
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm really glad you liked it 😊. Merry Christmas ⛄
Nice. I am way too old to have received a computer for Christmas, but I can imagine the excitement. At the age of 74 I have just bought my first retro computer, a BBC Model B. Had it shipped from the UK to the US. I got to play with it for a little while, but now it’s packed away pending a 2000 mile move from Georgia to Nevada.
@Colin_Ames hi Colin. Thanks for the comment. Well done on getting yourself a BBC Micro. It's still one of my all time favourites. Good luck with the move, and have a great Christmas and new year
@@Colin_Ames Hope the move goes well!
What a lovely Christmas video - thank you for sharing it.. need to get my speccy up to scratch - that said, we never had one when I was growing up.. I'm making up for it now 😃
I purchased an ATPL sideways ram board years ago when I first started (in a very hobbyist way) mucking around with electronics and made the exact same mistake in that I used pin headers instead of turned pin headers. Normal (non-turned) pin headers are too thick and can permanently widen the dual wipe contacts in the socket that they go into, making putting a ROM IC back into that socket an issue as the ROM IC legs don't always make good contact any longer. Sometimes you have to replace the socket.
I'm glad it's not just me then 😂. Really appreciate the comment. I hope you enjoyed it. Have a great Christmas 🎁⛄
hey simon great job onthat board! you stayed on it when i probably would have stopped..mery christmas my friend !
Thanks Mike. I can laugh about it now 😂 Have a brilliant Christmas and thank you for your support over the last year 😊
I like your Pac Man ghost light. I have the same one. 💪🏼😺👍🏼
Interesting video. It certainly highlights the need to make sure that pins and sockets are compatible with each other. Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
Hi Colin. Thanks for the comment. Yes some lessons are learned hard 😂. So much for thinking all PCB pins were the same. It's all a learning curve though. Not only on header pins, but also checking those via's, which are an easy one to miss. Glad you found it interesting. It makes the pain I went through worthwhile. Have a great Christmas 🎄🎁
My goodness.. that was a rollercoaster ride (and not one if the fun ones for you!) Certainly a cautionary tale there - not all pins are made equal.. something I will definitely bear in mind! Thank you for taking the time to edit down the many hours it took to get it all sorted - the outcome was worth it! Happy Christmas 🎄 to you and yours, and here's to mkre retro adventures in 2025! 🥂
Thanks James. I hope you enjoyed it. Certainly some learning points in there 😃. I had never considered a header pin could have so many variations, but hey that's learning for you. I had a comment to say these pins weren't original, and with hind sight, I definitely agree. If it wasn't for doing a video on it I'd have given up, so thanks to you and the others that watch my shenanigans, I percevered 😊. Have a fabulous Christmas and thank you as always for your support.
Ever heard the phrase... you can't fit a square peg into a round hole? .... The singular reason for all your socket problems is because someone has replaced the original turned pin 0.5mm round riser pins for 0.5mm square section Dupont style headers. They're quite a lot bigger than turned pins hence damage the springs, and won't push into turned pin sockets. I'd remove those Dupont headers and fit the proper turned pin headers.
I know 😂. I should have picked up on this much sooner, but hope it made for interesting watching, if not frustrating at times 😂. I've already got myself some turned pin headers winging their way to me. Thanks for the comment. Have a great Christmas 😊
Could it be that R37 is the same as "EAR" input pin? That would explain why you pick this resistor and not others.
Exactly right! That's for watching and commenting. Wishing you a merry Christmas and a great new year 😊
how come very time i think " i will upgrade this computer or that computer" you pop up showing me the do's and don'ts that's a Christmas gift innit ??
Really appreciate the comment 😁. I hope it was entertaining and helpful in some way. I think by showing where and why I went wrong, it might just save someone else making the same mistakes. Thanks for watching and have a great Christmas and new year
Another interesting video. Wishing you a Happy Xmas and a Merry New Year, looking forward to many more of your excellent videos in 2025. Hopefully Santa will come down your chimney and bring you loads of presents, provided you had been a good boy this year and not been put on the naughty list. Santa come early this year for me and bought me an Atari 800Xl, never had one of these machines before, so I'm looking forward to unboxing this on Xmas Day.
Thanks John. I'm glad you liked it, and I hope it made sense.. Have a great Christmas and new year with your new Atari 800 😁

5:00 There ought to be a nose adapter for de-soldering multiple in-line pin components like these.
@@Stelios.Posantzis I just got various sizes of these nozzles with mine. I didn't know there was an adapter for doing multiple pins
@@RetroComputingReboot Is there one? If there is such an adapter, then it's a life saver. I'm sure someone will come up with a method for making one. It will probably require a high temperature setting though.
@Stelios.Posantzis Ive never seen one. I think it might cause more problems than it would solve
@@RetroComputingReboot You're probably right. Still, it's a nice thought - if it could ever work!
@Stelios.Posantzis I'll have a look on AliExpress 😂
Not up to date. Actual version of T12 is grounded to case
@@MrMultipaco Good to hear
i have blu teethed a few now , speccies of course acorn electrons and msx and a 64c very nice mod works and as long as you can get mp3 or wav copies of games etc works a treat , i will advise to buy the modules that have a built in amp as you need to throw the volume on your device high to get a good signal
Good advice. Thanks for that. I havnt run into difficulties myself with that, but I've only fitted it to a Beeb Micro and a Speccy. From experience I would certainly disable Dolby Atmos and choose mono on your playback device. You just want a plain mono output
Voce pode medir as tensões de +5v -5v e 12v no chip de memoria ram baixa, para saber se a fonte interna está ok.
Hi Marcio. Yes that's the best place to check voltages on the Speccy
Hi, wonder about the hassle of getting replacement parts like the seal and glass tube.
Good question! Parts are readily available on AliExpress and for good prices, from the whole gun, to just the seals and filters. All the bits are there
Interesting video. I saw the hard plastic cover you have on your beebs for sale on ebay recently, the seller was asking a mere £50 for one! I think I'll give that a miss - lol. I think I might have a problem, there was a very nice 1040 STE (upgraded to 4 meg and complete with box and polys all in excellent condition ) with lots of goodies on ebay that I just had to buy. That's 5 x ST's I now have! If you need the split tos 1.04 mages give me a email to send it to you. Did you use the same dye colour on your Amiga 500 as the beebs? Bone colour, I think?
£50 for a cover? Yeh I'd leave that. I have three of those covers. I think the most I paid was £30. They are quite rare but they do come up. Just 5 ST's? Same as me 😂 although I still dream of getting a Mega. That's what I really want. The ROM images would be handy. I need to go though mine and see whats in them .I know I have a 1040STE that needs an upgrade. It's currently connected to my Megafiles and has a buggy earlier ROM that doesn't auto load the desktop config file to bring it into medium res, so am currently using a bug fix program for that, It's an annoying fix though as it's using up a bit of memory which is then causing some of the games I have on the HDD not to work. I definitely need to get round to updating the ROM and a 4MB upgrade. Yep, the Amiga I did use Bone. It's not a perfect match if you're super picky, but I think it's close enough to make me not care. Gives a really nice finish that lasts. Just watch out for getting IPA anywhere near it as it will lift it - I know from experience 😂
Nice to see crt still in action
I have three of those Cub monitors 😊 (terrible to film though 😕 so apologies for that)
Yeah, we had the Sideways Ram back in the day. And Exile is a fantastic game.
Tha KS for the comment. Glad you liked it 😊
I though the switch was to 'write protect' the ram chips, so software protection though it was a ROM and would run correctly, where if it was still writable then the 'rom image ' would not run.
Hi Andrew. You're right! Apologies for that. Ive mixed it up with S4 I think. I'll pin your comment. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment
Love the beeb, apart from the zx81 and the Speccy this felt like a 'real' computer with a proper keyboard. I have a copy of the original Elite in its original box with disk, manual and the function key overlay. At my high school we started off with 4 Apple //es but they were replaced with 16beebs econetted together. One machine had a floppy drive this was the once I used to play games on. this was the mid 80s. This was is New Zealand of all places
Glad you liked it 😊 I've got a complete copy of Elite for the Beeb but the tape version
I used to have the Watford Electronics sideways rom board with 16k sideways ram and battery backup, it was ace
I'm glad it brought back some happy memories 😊. What happened to your Beeb?
@@RetroComputingReboot it died many years ago i stil have 1 disk left tapper/load runner, i run BeebEm now
I have a Yihua 995D station. It works well except that if I have the master power on (switch on the back) and I turn off both the iron and the heat gun it beeps at me non stop. I have no idea how to turn this annoying feature off. I've lost my owner's manual and the factory does not return my emails. Any ideas ?
That's really odd. Mine definitely doesn't do that. Has it always done it?
@@RetroComputingReboot Yes. It must be an alarm of some sort but I can't figure out for what. If I leave the soldering iron or heat gun on, it doesn't do it.
@SomeTechGuy666 It must be an everything is off and safe alarm 😂

every time i hear BBC micro it takes me back to the school days lol .. nice video RCR 😊😊
Thank you for the comment. I really appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
Just noticed you are getting a lot of scan flicker on your BBC micro monitor filming. If you want to get rid of this I suggest when using your video camera you change its shutter setting to manual and try coming down off high shutter speeds like 100-100 to 30 and you will probably find it stops the flicker. Hope this helps.
Thank you. I really appreciate that. Sadly I don't have a video camera. I shoot all my vids off my phone (currently a Xiaomi 11T Pro). I'll be getting a proper video camera at some point once my budget allows for one though, but thanks for taking the time to try help me 😊
Excellent video! I got one of those a few weeks ago. A pain to install but very useful!
Thank you, I'm really glad you liked it and let me know. What did you think of the price of £35 for two? I'm crossing my fingers that the second board works when the new sockets finally arrive
@ That price sounds very good to me, i got mine cheaper, but that was an unusual price. IME, they tend to go for around £30-50, so 2 for 38 is very good
Have you considered getting an archimedes?
@cruxinc I've ordered myself a couple of RAM chips for it, so this second one had better work! 😂
@cruxinc Many many many times! I would love one but they are just way beyond what I can afford at the moment. I have many happy memories of using one back in my youth. But they are very much in my wish list, along with a Mega ST, a Spectrum 128 toast rack, an IBM XT, Amiga 600... you get the idea 😂
always interesting computer vids simon...i grew up in the u.s.and had an atari 400 and colecovision!....but i have read about the bbc and its an awesome computer as well...good job!
Thanks Mike
One of my Beebs - an Issue 3 motherboard version from 1982 - is fitted with this same expansion board. The board however is faulty, I think one of the LS245 transceiver chips is the problem, as one of the lines is "stuck", so the board needs to come out to undergo surgery. I'm not looking forward to this, as they are a real P.I.T.A. to relocate as you have discovered! The problem for me is that the connections are basically "blind" as it isn't really possible to see everything you would like to see without having to dodge back and forth with your eyes until you're confident they are aligned, and then they need a fair amount of force to locate them. I agree that turned pin sockets are probably the way to go when you replace them, so good luck! Nicely shot and edited, by the way! 😀
@@martsmiscmix Thank you. I really appreciate the feedback. I've had a couple of ideas that might help you. Check pin alignments before fitting by using loose sockets to just push fit Second idea is I might fit the board by soldering in the new sockets whilst the sockets are already installed on the expansion. Just a couple of thoughts that came to me after messing up one of my Beebs. Hindsight is a wonderful thing 😂
Really interesting vid - looks like there's quite an art to installing the board... I'm glad it was only the sockets that were damaged and not the tracks. You've got me pondering the options for extra RAM/ROM for my beeb.. just got to work out what's best for the least risk! I'm wondering if there's a PCBWay project design to support extra ROMs... Cheers 👍🏻
Cheers James. Yes the sockets were mangled. I didn't dwell on it in the vid but the pins looked perfectly aligned. However, since making the video, I've had a couple of ideas... First idea is to install the sockets on the pins before I solder the new ones in Second idea is to install the sockets in the BBC and then fit additional sockets onto the expansion board before refitting (but I'm not sure there would be enough clearance for this) Either way., check the pins line up perfectly with sockets BEFORE fitting. I might do another vid on the second board once these turned pin sockets have arrived, but I don't want to bore everyone to death with a similar video. What did you make of the sideways RAM? I had no idea it could make such a difference 😁 I'd say go for it if you fancy one. It's a brilliant 'little' board to fit, if a bit tricky. I'd follow my own advice here with hindsight and double check pin alignment with a spare couple of sockets before installing into a Beeb
@RetroComputingReboot Good luck with the replacement sockets.. your suggested approach seems to give a bit more tolerance. Yeah - I do like the idea of that extra RAM.. certainly offers less of a constraint in programming - loading samples like that is a great way of making use of it. I've got a long term project to write a game for the BBC and the extra RAM may come in handy for that ..
Best of luck with that project 🙂
Thanks for the Video, do you know if these boards are compatible with the BBC Master ?
I'm glad you liked it. I appreciate the comment. In answer to your question, no this board isn't compatible with the Master. By default though it does come as standard with 64kB of sideways RAM which I understand can be configured to take ROM images. There's also the cartridge ports as well that can be used and fitted with your own ROMs subject to using a suitable cartridge of course.
Short and girthy heating element, it has a more thermo mass and with a shorter tube you get less clogs. Maybe replacing that conic spring with a straight one with few loops and put in top of the splatter plate a copper wool will help you can clean it faster and change less often the filters. Cleaning will be replacing the wool with a fresh one. I regret my Pro's Kit SS-331H which has a longer an thinner heating element, which means less thermo mass and lot of clogging. I think I have to mod it and replace the heating element with one similar to yours, shorter and girthier.
I get very few clogs with mine. It's very rare. Although what I tend to do it keep the vacuum running for a second or two after I've brought it away from the joint I'm de-soldering, just so it gets a nice clean flow through the tube. I might try replacing the spring with steel wool as that's something that has been recommended.
How did you get the painted one finished so nicely?
I used a spray on plastic dye
Great video.. I've been eyeing up one of these for a good while - being able to write my own ROMs for retro kit would be amazing. It looks like the T48 is significantly cheaper than the T56 but does pretty much everything I'd need.. maybe this is a Christmas present for myself 😁
Thanks James, I really appreciate that. I'm glad you liked it. I just wanted to make a video for anyone out there who had been toying with the idea of getting one but potentially put of thinking it would be hassle and overly complicated. I think the T56 is probably only worth the spend if you need a larger ZIF socket or do loads of programming where the faster programming speeds would be of benefit. When I got my T48, I just got the unit on its own without all the myriad of adapters you can buy. I can potentially see myself needing adapters for PLCCs at some point (maybe), but I'm going to be fine with just the ZIF socket for now. The good thing is as well, you can always buy the adapters separately at a later date for what you need. I've got some videos planned now making use of this, so it will be getting plenty of use
im glad you explained this , as i have been toying with a purchase to burn roms for speccies , the selling point is that it also checks IC's which means you can save on buying a dedicated tester nice explanation for us older slower users
@@firsteerr I'm glad you found it useful. I e been in the same boat as you have for ages. It's surprising pretty straight forward to use
Bought my programmer a few years ago and used it to make 1.04 tos roms for some of my atari st's. Found it to be fairly easy to use and is a useful bit of kit.
Funny you should mention that. I've got some chips on order so I can upgrade my Atari ST's
@@RetroComputingReboot In my ST's, I went from 2 x rom chips to 6 x rom chips. I don't know if you'll be upgrading via 6 x rom chips to 1.04, but if you are, I have split the 1.04 image into 6 parts and can email them to you if you wish?
@JohnSmith-bh4zx Thanks John. I'd appreciate that. I've got 4 ST's, a mixture of 520 and 1040 ST and STE's. I can't remember off the top of my head how many use 2 ROMs and how many are on 6. What chips did you use?
@@RetroComputingReboot 3 of my STFM's had 2 rom chips ( in each machine) with TOS 1.02. I used 6 x 27C256 -10 (I'm not an expert but you may be ok using 27C256 -15 or similar) and split the 1.04 image into 6 parts. What's your email so I can send the images to you. If you replace 2 rom chips with 6 chips there are 3 links on the pcb that need solder bridges to be removed from "1M" and soldered across the "256K" bridges, but they are easy to spot.
@@RetroComputingReboot Hi, I don't why but YT seems to have lost a reply from me? But anyway, the Eprom's I used were 27C256-10, but I think you could use slightly slower chips like 27C256-15. If you increase the number of roms to 6 you will need to unsolder 3 bridges on the pcb from the "1M" link to "256K" link (the exact location of these links can vary with the motherboard version) but they are fairy easy to spot though. Let me know your email and I can send you the split 1.04 images.
Can it program 27v and 25v eproms ? That is the important thing.
@@G7VFY According to the specs it can go up to 25v
@@RetroComputingReboot Can it do 2708, 2716, 2516 2732 and 2532 as well?
@G7VFY You would have to check on the Xgecu website. All the specs are there and a full list of chips it can work with
@@G7VFY No not 2708s unfortunately.
