- Finishing building this ZX Spectrum from all new parts was a long time in the making, but in this video the build will be finished? But will it work or will it be an expensive mistake?? This could be the birth of an all new original ZX Spectrum :-)

Well done, I can see this ZX Spectrum was assembled with love and care. It is a fine example of the Spectrum that brought so much joy and enthusiasm to the homes of millions kids.
Thank you, I really appreciate the comment. If I could do it all again, I would, I just wouldn't use cheap solder in the beginning... But it's all a learning curve and I enjoy learning 😊
Fantastic Si, so glad it worked out so well for you. Having done an Amiga 500+ build from PCB up (rescuing my own original Varta victim in the process) I completely understand the elation at seeing it boot up and work for the first time. I'd never been so excited to see a Kickstart screen, lol. I was also a 48K rubber-key speccy owner, but sadly didn't keep it, so I'm sorely tempted to follow in your footsteps here. The cost is worth it to have the satisfaction of having built it yourself. That outweighs the value of originality for me personally. Congrats!
Thanks Neil. It's one of those things, you either get that elation when it powers on and works, or it just goes over your head.
I did a Speccy fix for a viewer a while back which I did for free (other than parts), and has very kindly got in touch and is buying me a case for this build 😁
Inspiring stuff. Tempted to add to the Speccy population myself... One day maybe!
Thank you for the comment. I'm glad you liked it 😊
Fantastic project .. i lived in uk for over twenty years i had lots of electronic hobby’s when I was young living in the uk left uk twenty years ago I now do lots of computer hobby’s I find it relaxing wish you well
Thank you. I really appreciate that. There was quite a lot of sweat (and money 😂) that went into this. Making the videos is a bit of a lonely process, so comments like yours make it all worthwhile
And thanks Jon for C73 the only person on the planet to had any 😂. Now you are the only one. That was a fab watch Si, really pleased it all worked for you. Just to see that smile on your face at the end was like Christmas Day 198x all over again. We both must be mad if you think building a brand new Spectrum from board up is special because it really is satisfying. 🤓🙌🏻
I couldn't have done it without you. Your help has been amazing
I like the board versions that implement the ULA with discrete components. It's actually not too bad in terms of size.
@@rootbeer666 like the Harlequin? I'd definitely like to build one of those at some point, but in this build I was going for the new original look 😊
@@RetroComputingReboot Yep. One of those.
Hey! I just finished a Sizif 512 in a Plus case and had a moment of WILL IT WORK? Lol. Thankfully it did, and the ULAplus is very fun.
It's when you've put so much time, effort and money in. So nerve wracking that moment of switch on, so many potentials for mistakes to have been made 😂
i was waiting for a Frankenstein-esque, "IT'S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!" 😃
😂😂😂 nearly, I was that thrilled
Excellent work, and congratulations! Have you ran diagnostics on the first ROM? Maybe the screen was made with inverted colour for the boot screen. I like the white on black, easy on the eyes. Thanks for sharing
Thanks. I appreciate the comment. I havnt done anything with the ROM as yet. It puzzled me though, as none of my other Speccys liked it either, all of them behaving in a similar manner
That is a minimalist RF modulator.
It sure is isn't it? 😂
Well done - when you first booted see all them square colours that is all I get - but I think it is the lower ram problem I have. Ill try week-end to fix mine.
@@davidcocklin2109 the fact you get the coloured blocks is a good sign that it's nearly there. I find it easier to swap out components with known good ones, but a logic probe or oscilloscope may help you otherwise
@@RetroComputingReboot Thank you - looking at yours I notice you have OKI 3 joined - I have 2 joined - so will try 3
@@davidcocklin2109 yes worth checking those jumpers are set correctly.
Search for the Spectrum repair field manual as well. It's a great reference tool. If you struggle finding it, send me an email as YT doesn't like links in the comments
nice job on that cool red board!! thats a nice computer..
Thanks Mike. I'm looking forward to getting it in a new case 😊
Great video series on your zx issue 3b build. I've just received my issue 3 pcb and I've started gathering together the parts ready for my build. Where did you source the Axial MLCC Axial caps? (I'm in the UK) I found some but they are silly prices. Love the Speccy videos keep up the good work! I think the bluetooth module is a great idea, the loading sounds take me right back - LOAD "" (ENTER) - Big smiles 10 again!!
Thanks for the comment, I'm really glad you liked it.
I got the caps from Retroleum. A quick Google should have you find them
Phil there is brilliant.
Good luck with the build. It's certainly not the easiest or cheapest by any stretch of the imagination but it's great to see an all new Speccy come to life 😊
Freaking w!ZaRd! Sir
Well Done
Thank you 😊
It’s the J G Harrison ROM I sent you it is inverted.
@@jonathangratton4761 I thought it might have meant to be inverted 😂. However, It was giving me a K cursor rather than when you first like press a key you get the word on the key rather than just the letter (if that makes sense 😂)
@@RetroComputingReboot Yip no keywords you just type commands like in 128 basic. Know we been conversing, so will let you explain to your readers when you’ve swatted up 😂
@jonathangratton4761 😂
