when you dropped that faceplate into place, and started with the closeups, i couldn't quit grinning, shaking my head, and saying, _"Wow."_ between the board, case, keyboard, and faceplate, it looks like you got max "bang for the buck". (well, i guess in YOUR case, _"more pop for the pound".)_ 😃
Thanks for the comment John, I'm so glad you liked it. I debated colours forever. I just figured 'Lets go for it'. I ummed and erred most about the fluorescent keys, but I love them 😁
same here. through-hole is my groove. SM takes more gear. my old eyes have a hard time seeing the components; my hands have a hard time manipulating them. through-hole for the win!!
@@JohnLeePettimoreIII I found with SMD, I used silv er solder and a very tiny tip to do the practice boards from AliExpress. I enjoyed doing them but I lost a capacitor and never found it again as it was so small. I used a 50x magnification to see what the values are and taken my glasses off to solder as I see better close up with out glasses. But through hole is best and easier. In the end, I had a few SMD practice boards and made an open box with them by super glueing them together and drilled two holes in two sides for a bolt to go through and a 2mm hole in the front and it was a solder reel holder for quite some time for me.
@@RetroComputingReboot If you try it on practice boards, you need tweezers with sharp tips, thin solder and thin tips. You have your microscope so it will be better for you, I have a hot air gun but prefer to use an iron to do SMD. Its wuicker than waiting for the hot air to heat the solder up. It is satisfying when you make a practice board with leds on oit and they work as they should.
Looks bloody amazing mate! I love that so much. I own the 48k OG and the +2 grey model. Became a HUGE fan of this computer over the past couple years. Might be my favorite of all time. Yours there looks awesome! Those glow keys are fantastic
Ive started another one, just because I wasn't happy with some of my earlier soldering. Having got over those glitches, the idea of building another one seems like fun
I actually havnt made my mind up on that. It does sound great and all that. I never bought the Next as it was just too expensive, but I might buy this as I just love Spectrums 😂

That looks absolutely brilliant Simon. What a testament to the humble Speccy and you must be so proud of building one from scratch 🙌🏻
Thanks Jon. I'm glad you liked it. And that is for your support making it 😊
looks great. now is time to play on it
@@KraftyLive I'm glad you like it. I've played on it loads. I love 'charging up' the fluorescent keys and turning the lights down 😁
uh....that looks absolutley brilliant!!!simon!!i think we have similar taste in this!
😂 Thanks Mike
Wow... That's a lot of hard work Simon 😮😮
It was but worth it in the end 😊
I prefer through hole soldering to surface mount. The Spectrum looks great. Well done.

@@coffeecuparcade thank you. I'm glad you liked it. It's a pleasure to share this with other fams
You can "feel" a computer that you make yourself.
From being a huge Spectrum fan back when I had my original (and still have), to bring a new one into the world was just so much fun
truth.
that populated board is looking sleek and sexy!! well done, m'lad! 😃

now spend an hour and a half trying to load "daly Thompsons decathlon" from a binatone cassette player and your golden
😂 I'll give that a miss
ah yes... it reminds me of a song.
