Welcome to The Green Yard! My name is Schuyler and my wife and I just moved into a new house in the heart of Phoenix. Join me as I take the brown, slightly landscaped and mostly unusable yard into a beautiful, green, profitable and livable landscape. There are many plans in the works and plants in the ground. See you soon and remember to live green, plants lots and of course, have fun!
Touring a UNIQUE and ABUNDANT Food Forest Garden in Phoenix, AZ! (BOUNTIFUL Flowers and Fruit)
**If you have a Green Yard that you want featured on the channel make sure to comment or email me at thegreenyardarizona@gmail.com. I am looking to film tours in Phoenix, the US and Abroad.**
Welcome back to The Green Yard and another one of our Green Yard Tours! It is always so amazing to connect with fellow Gardeners who enjoy creating green spaces full of abundant fruiting and flowering trees and plants. These spaces definitely help nurture the mind, body and planet. Ed has one of these Green Yards. On our tour, we got to explore mature stone fruit trees dripping with fruit as well as tropical trees beginning to flower. Ed has numerous trees that are producing and their bounty definitely helps provide for him and his family. Starting in the front yard, Ed has created a welcoming sitting area, which is lined with a Limequat, Barbados Cherry, Plumeria, Early Grande Peach and many more beautiful trees and plants. Moving into the backyard, Ed has created a water feature, which houses several water plants, as well as a large variety of tropical trees like Guava, Angels Trumpet, Mango and more. Continuing further into Ed's Green Yard is his pool, which features a mature Peach tree, White Sapote and Bamboo, as well as several younger trees like a Tiger Panache Fig, Jaboticaba and Black Sapote. Moving into the more mature sanctuary of his Green Yard there are 20 year old Bananas, several Jackfruit trees, a beautiful pond and turtles. I find it inspiring to see such beauty and productivity from one Green Yard. To learn more about growing fruiting and flower trees and plants in the Phoenix area follow us on social media. Welcome back to The Green Yard and a very exciting video featuring our very first Papaya harvest! I just released a video about growing Papaya's here in the Phoenix area, th-cam.com/video/xhWxQgQIgBk/w-d-xo.html. I have found that they are one of the easiest fruit trees to grow here in Phoenix and they produce a lot of fruit! This is especially true with the correct microclimate. While Papaya's...

Hey, thank you! It was fun working with Schuyler. He did a great job editing the video.
What the update on your mango tree brotha
I love the turtle sanctuary
What kind of sun protection do you give your mango trees? My Nam Doc Mei suffered some sunburn its first summer. It is under noon day shade and then I only had 30% shade cloth when it got hit with the western sun. This summer I gave it 60% shade cloth from the western sun and it’s looking super healthy. It almost died its first summer. I’m curious, did your dad’s OS mango survive? I had an Orange Sherbet mango that was getting too much radiant heat from two walls that were too close to my new tree. Had 30% shade cloth but just couldn’t survive its first summer. I know someone else whose OS died and learned from someone who grows them in Florida that they seem to be a little more delicate to get started. Plan on planting another mango since I’m finally having success.
Cool video. I enjoy watching these yard tours and having the owners discuss the unique aspects of their yard/trees!
Hello @TouchGrassGardening, thank you for watching and commenting! I agree with you 100%, it is so much fun to go and see different owners discuss their Green Yards and trees. Let me know if you ever want to collaborate and do a tour of your awesome yard! You're trees are all amazing!
@@thegreenyardaz Thanks, I appreciate that. Let's do it sometime in the future when it's not so hot!
Got lemongrass bulbs from Asiana store in Glendale. It has been growing well in our hot summer outside. Love it!!
My brown turkey taste like a peach. I have several different figs and BT is one of my favorites.
Please, Are there any updates ? Was it a success?
Hello @saklynabil4149, thank you for watching and commenting! Unfortunately our Sweet Granadilla was not a success. I personally think that they can be grown here in Phoenix but I believe I planted mine at the incorrect time. I feel that if I would have planted it in spring after the last frost it would have had enough time to get acclimated before our summer heat. If you get a chance to try one let me know if it is successful or not. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you for the reply
Hi Schuyler how its going?
Hello @fancydog5866, thank you for watching and commenting! Everything is going great, the plants are growing very well and I'm going to be harvesting Mango's soon.
What species of Paulownua is this ?
Hello @yourhealthcareguru2592, thank you for watching and commenting! I am not sure the exact species of Paulownia tree this is. It was just listed as a Royal Empress tree when I purchased it at the local nursery. It does appear to be a sterile variety as it has not produced any seed pods, which helps narrow it down a little. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hi. I'm interested in buying apple rootstocks, is there a good nursery website you could recommend to me?
Hello @emmanuelmbah3364, thank you for watching and commenting! I think that's amazing that you are looking to buy apple rootstocks, is your goal to graft your own trees? I do not know a website myself as all of the trees that I have purchased are already grafted, but I did some research and found, www.copenhavenfarms.com/, which seemed to have good reviews. If you are looking to purchase already grafted trees here in the Phoenix area I would recommend Greenlife by Shamus O'leary. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks alot for your reply, I am looking to buy just rootstocks so I could graft myself at home. I'll go with the website you researched, I just emailed them. Regards Emmanue
Wow i didn't know they grew from cuttings 😮
Hello @geriannroth449, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, this was new information I learned from my local tropical tree nursery. I always figured they were grown from seed only.
Your garden looks amazing!😊
Hello @jadele574, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words. The food forest is really starting to take off and I'm hoping it starts to produce more abundantly as well.
I live in Arizona! Someone is giving me a four foot papya tree that needs to be transplanted I to the ground. What do you recommend for soil?
Hello @shawniedaily7744, thank you for watching and commenting! That is so amazing that someone gifted you a four foot Papaya tree. I would definitely put it in ground. You can check out my Papaya planting video by visiting, th-cam.com/video/tBl6mOcv9fA/w-d-xo.html. I would recommend using any in ground potting soil and creating a mixture of 50% native soil and 50% potting soil. Let me know if you have any other questions.
How do these taste? I keep hearing that they are kinda bland?
Hello @FC2ESWS, thank you for watching and commenting! I feel that these figs taste pretty good. I will say that they are bland if they are not completely ripe. It can sometimes be a fight with the birds to get the ripe figs, but when I can they are very sweet and flavorful. Let me know if you have any other questions.
What kind of fertilizers should I use 😊
Hello @pmurT4202, thank you for watching and commenting! Personally, I have found the most success using fish emulsion as a fertilizer for my tropical trees, including this Jackfruit. I just put out a short about how I feed my trees, which you can watch here, th-cam.com/users/shortst3yZmirMR28. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Did these end up being sweet granadillas? Were you able to get them to fruit? Just came back from Peru to Phoenix and tried these for the first time there - I’d love to grow them or find out where to buy!
Hello @marensorensen2013, thank you for watching and commenting! Unfortunately, the vine did not make it through our record heat last year. I have a feeling that they can grow in Phoenix but they need to be planted in the spring to get acclimated before our heat. That is so amazing that you got to go to Peru, I love the country and am always excited to eat the exotic fruit when we visit my wife's family there. I have had a very hard time finding any Sweet Granadilla plants so if you find some please let me know!
You will love it when it starts fruiting. The fruit tastes delicious. I'm in Mesa, Arizona the one we have has 6 fruit on it right now.
I've been trying to get my hands on one of the fruit for years !! Would you be able to ship one to me in Pennsylvania !? I would be SO GRATEFUL !!!!
Hello @edibletropicaltrees, thank you for watching and commenting! I am so excited for it to start fruiting. That is amazing that you have a mature plant with fruit! Is there any way that you would be open to giving me a tour of your yard or at least your Monstera for the channel? Just let me know here or email me at thegreenyardarizona@gmail.com.
Hello @dylancook8863, I'm not sure about @edibletropicaltrees, but if mine ever fruits I will keep you in mind. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hello @themangovista, thank you for watching and commenting! I really appreciate your kind words!
Wow, good job sir,,,we try ,try try, which tree will trive in AZ.,,,,its hard when we have 4 seasons,, tropical is tropical, as always sir,,keep on ,,,❤❤❤
Hello @user-nm7xx5cr8z, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words, it has been a lot of work but also very rewarding, especially since I am finally starting to get to harvest from some of my trees.
Wow,,,I was wondering if a mango tree will trive in winter,,,seen the video now after 1yr. ,,how did it go,? Pls. share so I could plant a mango tree too in Tx,,thank you sir!,,
Hello @usernm7xx5cr8z, thank you for watching and commenting! This particular tree did very well over the winter, my other Mango trees did even better. All of them are currently holding Mango fruit and doing very well. I did an update short video recently, which you can view here, th-cam.com/users/shorts54M0KVPLuC4. Let me know if you have any questions.
Amazing! I'm in the west valley and am seeing huge growth out of all my sugarcane varieties. This humidity is helping so much
Awesome! What varieties do you have working for you out here?
@ALLDRAINSEMERGENCYPLUMBING I have one that I got from Shamus that is a black sugar cane variety. I believe it's either Thai or Vietnamese. And my newest variety is purple Hawaiian. Surprisingly my purple Hawaiian sugar cane is the most hardy. I've had my black sugar cane for a few years now and unfortunately it is dying from red spot fungus
@@bigpapaplantman5126 purple Hawaii sounds yum. :)
Hello @bigpapaplantman5126, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words, that is amazing that you are seeing such growth on your sugarcane. I have been thinking about planting sugarcane but not sure if it's worth it. Would you recommend? I agree, the small increase in humidity during the monsoon season is definitely helping all my trees too.
Aren’t you worried that letting a first or second year mango tree fruit is going to kill it? Have you ever tasted a fruit punch mango? I have a Nam Doc Mei but I am trying to figure out what kind of mango tree to plant next. Your trees are looking great.
Hello @daveaz9962, thank you for watching and commenting! From my experience, a Mango tree will not hold onto fruit unless it's ready. My Fruit Punch and Spirit of 76 dropped all fruit until this year. I feel that they did this because this year they finally have a good structure and are ready to fruit. This Super Alphonso has always had a good structure so it must be ready. I am planning on covering it this winter though to make sure it makes it through the cold. I have not tasted a Fruit Punch but I have one on the tree and will put out a tasting video soon. Honestly, I think any Mango tree is great. I feel that they are one of, if not the, easiest tropical fruit tree to grow here in Phoenix. I've enjoyed our Carrie Mango so that might be one to consider too. Thank you for your kind words! Let me know if you have any other questions.
How do you do cold protection for your tropical?
Hello @annabenedian1625, thank you for watching and commenting! I have a video on how I cold protect my tropical trees, which you can view here, th-cam.com/video/CDZaqKkREc0/w-d-xo.html. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Really cool
Hello @dthedad7330, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words!
Dude, these trees are beautiful but they are gonna mess up that wall
Hello @samiam777, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words about my Mango trees. I'm not sure if they are going to mess up the wall or not. Typically, from my observation of mature Mango trees here in Phoenix, grafted Mango trees end up acting like a dwarf variety of Mangos and top out around 10 - 15 feet. I plan on continually trimming them to keep them smaller and more manageable as well. I guess time will tell, I appreciate you letting me know and I will keep it in mind as they get more mature.
Tight looking good ASF bro ❤
Hello @haze9601, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words!
Hello, where did you purchased it? Thank you
Hello @vianeygastelum569, thank you for watching and commenting! I got our Jocote from a local tropical tree nursery called Greenlife by Shamus O'leary. I know that he has some in stock now and they do love to be planted in the summer. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hey man, I just bought a brown turkey from a Lowes, im also out here in the low valley.. What would you recommend for watering? I havent put it in the gorund yet as I'm trying to break up the caliche with elemental sulfur applications.. So i transpotted it into a 10 gallon fabric pot and it seems like its doing just OKAY, if i dont water it in the earily morning the leaves sag, Im brand new to growing anything outdoors here in the desert, some feedback would be highly appreciated thanks bro!.
Hello @haze9601 thank you for watching and commenting! There are a lot of factors that go into how much water a tree needs including it's age, the soil type it's planted into, etc. Since it is in a fabric pot (grow bag), from my experience, I would water it two to three times a week. I would also make sure it has shade after 11am. I feel that this will help it survive until you are able to put it in the ground. I have several plants that I had to place in pots/grow bags and they are doing well with bi-weekly water and afternoon shade. I hope this helps and I hope you're able to harvest some figs soon! Let me know if you have any other questions.
There isn't an issue with the roots being that close to your block fence?
Hello @doloresseames5067, thank you for watching and commenting! I have not had any issues and I really don't foresee any issues in the future. The reason is because I am on flood irrigation, which helps properly water the trees. There have been many growers in the Phoenix area that have found that deep watering less frequently allows the roots to follow the water further into the ground thereby minimizing any potential damage to foundations or walls. Proper deep watering can also be done by hand through the use of a berm around the root zone of the tree. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
I’m about to try in SW FL lol. Bought a bag of them, and the seeds had already sprouted inside the apples so… I’m gonna try lol. I don’t know how well it’ll work.
Hello @brie3679, thank you for watching and commenting! That is awesome that you are going to try growing some Pink Lady Apples in SW FL! I hope it works out for you. They are a good apple and a somewhat easier tree to grow and have produce here in Phoenix. I think it may be interesting to see how they grow from seed since I know most Pink Lady Apple Trees are grafted. You'll have to keep me updated on your progress and hopefully your successes. Let me know if you have any questions.
Is it still alive?
Hello @jimmydean123123, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, our Rose Apple tree is still alive and doing really well! It's been putting on a lot of new growth this spring and is finally growing in a more upright direction and getting a tree shape (before it was growing more on the ground). I recently did a short talking about it, th-cam.com/users/shortsNamaSppbtWo?si=qT8n_Rj1bWHo_JI6. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Good job brother I love figs tree
Hello @oldyspices, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate the kind words! I love figs too, they do great here in the Phoenix area.
I'm in Virginia now so sick I had to go home to mom
I would like to buy please keep in mind I'm poor don't have much and no support
Hello @TwanaHanson-dv2yp, thank you for watching and commenting! I'm sorry to hear that you are sick and not doing very well. Unfortunately, my Soursop did not do very well this past winter and died back to the roots. I thought it was gone but it just started coming back. This means I will not have the ability to harvest any leaves or do anything with the tree for several years while it recovers and gets back to the size it was before. I hope you are able to find another source of leaves.
@@thegreenyardaz thank you for responding
I live in Queen Creek (East Valley) can I grow bananas here? No way…what’s your secret?🤩👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Hello @eurikia1961, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, you can grow bananas here! I think they are actually one of the easiest plants to grow here too as they love our heat and tolerate our cold. They also produce delicious bananas. You can watch our video on growing bananas here, th-cam.com/video/HJN2Vr3151I/w-d-xo.html. Let me know if you have any other questions.
They don’t give much shade right?
with a height of 50 plus feet and a width of 30-40, and leaves the size of your head, i'd say they give plenty of shade...and in record time since this is one of the worlds fastest growers...
Hello @alejandroortiz4510, thank you for watching and commenting! They actually give a lot of shade but only in the warmer months. They are deciduous so they loose their leaves during our winter months here in Phoenix. This is part of the reason that I think they are one of the best shade trees for Phoenix, if you're using them as a foundation to create a tropical food forest. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hello @ravenred201, thank you for watching and commenting! I would agree with you. My trees have grown at an astonishing rate and they do give plenty of shade during the warmer months.
The 48 second intro of the video is waaaaaaay too long!
Hello @geoph1972, I appreciate you watching and commenting! I agree with you, it was definitely too long, Unfortunately, I can't go into the past and change it so I have worked on making my new video intros 30 seconds or less.
@@thegreenyardaz At least it's a pleasant 30 seconds.
Appreciate your videos and knowledge share! I just picked up a Pixie Zee from one of the big box stores and brought it home only to have it get really crispy and curl on me! I had originally thought I could place it on my patio by my hot tub, but maybe it got too hot there? Will it bounce back? I have since repotted into a larger container and placed in a grass/dirt area. I have about 2-3 inches of mulch at the top. Any tips and advice would be much appreciated. The plant has a set of peaches and I was hoping to have a harvest! Thanks!
Hello @EdnaSmith, thank you for watching and commenting! Of course, I love growing plants and I figure I can share my knowledge and experience to help others grow too. That great that you were able to buy a Pixie Zee, I'm sorry to hear it's not doing well. It really just depends on how damaged it is. I have seen Peach trees be very resilient before when given the correct care. Is it doing okay in our summer heat? What I do is, for the first year, no matter the tree, I give it afternoon shade. The mulch is definitely helping to keep the soil moist so that is a good thing. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Would you consider selling your blue java banana pups? I'd love to try growing them in a container

Your mangoes look great can you do a video on how you plant and feed/water? It seems I’m really good at killing them , I have tried different methods through the years and I just can’t get it. Also if you need a “how not to “video I’m here😂
Hello @jeffconboy7146, thank you for watching and commenting! I put a short video out recently about how I feed my plants, which you can view here, th-cam.com/users/shortst3yZmirMR28. I have not done a video on watering yet so I will consider putting that out. It seems to happen sometimes, I kill plants too, I have just seem to found what works for me in my yard and have had some thrive and survive.

Hello @dulcegomez201, thank you for watching and commenting! I bought this Papaya tree at a local tropical tree nursery called Greenlife by Shamus O'leary. They have an amazing selection of different tropical trees. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Cool bro! How did it taste?
Hello @SubrubicultureAZ, thank you for watching and commenting! They actually tasted amazing. I was a little shocked about how sweet it was. I have harvested several since then and I will say that they need to be completely ripe before harvesting or they do not taste as good. They can ripen on the counter though as well, which is amazing. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I just found your channel and am so glad to see what actually IS possible to grow in Phoenix (I'm by South Mountain). You've inspired me to experiment with planting more fruit albeit in containers--so we'll see how that goes. Please keep it up!
Hello @broady1247, thank you for watching and commenting! I'm so glad you found my channel! Yes, it is possible to grow a lot of fruiting and flowering trees and plants here in Phoenix. In fact, I would argue that Phoenix is one of the best climates for growing plants. Let me know if you have any questions about your plants and maybe I can help.
Congratulations on the harvest! I tried growing the Pakistan Mulberry but it didn't survive the cold and wet winters we have here in Wales. I'm trying again with a variety called Wellington - fingers crossed!
Hello @PlasBachGarden, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words, they were delicious and I'm so excited for next year. I'm sorry to hear it did not survive the cold and wet winters in Wales. I hope that variety will be successful, you'll have to keep me updated on your success!
@@thegreenyardaz Hello! Bad news - no signs of growth on the Wellington. Oh well. Will have to save up and try again with another variety!
Nice garden. But you didn’t even talk about the monstera…. Lol
Hello @Nopalitoss, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, I realized I did not talk about the Monstera very much in the video. I'm thinking about putting out another longer update but I did put out a short recently, which you can view here, th-cam.com/users/shortsW9Poe_Ob45E.
Pakistan Mulberries are only ripe when they turn a very dark pruple, or black. Tree is looking great!
Hello @paradisusAZ, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, they are completely ripe when they turn that really dark purple color. I've found that the birds typically beat me to the harvest if I wait that long. They do still taste good when they're not completely ripe but they are not as sweet. Thank you for the kind words!
@@paradisusAZ I do like the red ones just before turning dark. they can be very sweet, but not soggy like they are dark.
how old that tree...
Hello @manilaboy659, thank you for watching and commenting! At the time of the video it was about three years old but only two years in this spot. I took it out of the ground at my old house before moving it into The Green Yard. Let me know if you have any other questions.
