  • Welcome back to The Green Yard and another planting video! It has been hot here in Phoenix, with record breaking temperatures and it's time to add to the Tropical Food Forest. As our food forest is maturing it is important for us to add new layers to our ever evolving ecosystem. Our food forest layers include our canopy or shade trees, fruit trees, herbs, shrubs, ground cover, root crops and vines. In this video, I am planting a Red Button Ginger. This unique plant is native to Central America, and while often grown as an ornamental, it does have an edible flower, which is supposed to be sweet. The herbaceous and shrub layer not only allow for growing edible plants but also support species that can attract pollinators and add to the beauty and biodiversity of a Food Forest. Our Red Button Ginger is a welcome addition and is placed between our Soursop and Santol tree. Red Button Gingers need afternoon shade and protection from our cold winters here in Phoenix. This position will help with easy protection in the Winter, since it will be included in our frost fabric placed over our Santol and Soursop trees. It is also well protected from our afternoon sun by only getting sun until 10am. Lastly, I added agricultural Sulphur to lower our soil PH. Where do you get your plants? Is it mostly one nursery, or several? You’ve always got such interesting ones you’re planting!

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! I typically get my plants from one nursery, Shamus O'Leary Tropical Fruit Trees (Living the Greenlife). I have found that he has not only the expert knowledge but also the healthiest plants in the valley. What I have in The Green Yard is less than half of the inventory he has in his nursery. It is incredible to see what does well here and also the amazing diversity of plants that exist. I have in the past also bought a few plants from Costco. Let me know if you have any other questions.

@@thegreenyardaz awesome, thanks! Yes, his place is awesome… I guess I don’t even know half of what he has there!

His place is really amazing! Yes, they have so many trees and plants. Sometimes they have plants in stock that aren't listed on their website too so keep a look out when you stop by.

7 months later, how is your red button ginger doing? Have you posted in another video?

Hello @nataliesanchez9993, thank you for watching and commenting! Our red button ginger did not like the winter this year. It was frost protected with supplemental heat and it died back. I know they go dormant in the winter but I didn't think it would die back to the roots, so I'll know in a few months if it's going to come back or not. I will have to post an update video on whether it comes back or not so keep any eye out for that in the next couple months.
