- Kidney Disease is si common in cats. This veterinarian gives such a great explanation of the function of the kidneys, the disease condition, and most importantly, how to manage the disease.Every cat parent needs to watch this one!
Great informative video.
Your videos are very helpful and informative! Though I’m stuck and a little confused on finding the best food for my kitten? What are the best brands for dry food? My kitten has a pretty sensitive stomach and most wet foods so far upset her a lot. I really want the best food for her. Do you have any suggestions?
Fancy Feast kitten wet food made one of my cats throw up. I just kept switching foods until I found one they both could eat. Then the other one got sick. Even Hill's sensitive stomach dry food made her sick. I now feed them homemade, which is not popular around here. But they are both healthy and no more throwing up. All cats are different. Have you taken your kitten to a vet? There are foods with limited ingredients and others with unique proteins. Good luck.
@@edschulhof6303 thank you, she’s going to the vet soon as we can get her there
@@Isabella_TimarieArabianHorses Do you ride or train Arabians? Cal Poly Pomona has an equestrian program. Famous for their Arabian Horse Center.
@@edschulhof6303 yes I ride, breed and in the process of learning how to train/back Arabians. I have never heard of that program definitely will take a look!
Kitten food is probably the easiest to deal with since there’s so many good ones. I would stick with the more popular brands. I’ve really not seen bad nutrient levels I. Kitten foods. Once Adult, then it becomes more critical.
18:55 - Royal Canin has it. "Early Renal Support".
"Senior Aging 12+" - 30% protein
"Early Renal" - 28% protein
"Renal Special" - 26% protein
"Renal" - 23% protein
@@ZaryaTheLaikaholy cow! As typical for food companies now, that might be a bit overkill, but the point is more moderate protein for cats is optimal.
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Yeah, what Uri Burstyn said about maintaining muscle mass reminds me of Danielle Conway on
All-Star Veterinary Clinic's Roundtable podcast explaining why she prefers Royal Canin's research setting upper limit of 60% protein over Hill's research setting upper limit at 45%.
Then ah, everything clicked in after looking at the protein content of each of the renal support products.
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy I would also post the protein levels of their 7+, but it's all over the place depending on lifestyle, breed, type etc
@@ZaryaTheLaika In the USA, three of those four contain carrageenan. Carrageenan is a known carcinogen and a genotoxin. So to fight kidney disease, we are going to give our cats cancer and cause seizures. Got it. Carrageenan is banned in the EU and Australia.
This video is two years old. I guess that does not matter? Dr. Burstyn advocates that older cats be fed wet food only. Cats that are boarded with Dr. Rea are fed wet food. Baby steps.
Ed, yes, I saw it was older but info still accurate.
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy This vet posted a "short" about how happy he is for getting his Pfizer covid vaccine. Comments are disabled.
At what age should a cat have an sdma?
@tj, based on my experience and what the doc said, statistically your cat is at higher risk of age related disease like renal disease at age 7 or 8. So that would be a great time.
@PetFoodPuzzleGuy great, thanks for the info.
All my labs contain SDMA now and any running idexx is probably the same so there is a good chance if you consent to yearly wellness labs your getting an SDMA . It’s pretty standard now, I even do it on my in clinic labs starting about a month ago.
@@AnimalDocRea that’s awesome! When I retired there were still many clinics not using it. Hopefully that’s changed in two years.
What’s Asma?
