Today I had the pleasure of going to Northampton to visit Joes garden and tropical pond. Joe and his brother of Shadelandscapes created this absolute gem of an ecosystem pond which gave me so much inspiration for my own garden. For more pond videos check out their work on instagram @ shadelandscapes Honestly my video doesn’t do their work justice.

Great comment and insights, as usual. Would really like to see videos on your insights to landscape architecture! 👍💯
Thank you. I have lots of plans for this season so I will try to film the process. Cheers
Great concept with the new paths think you will enjoy the additional tropical plants to enjoy. Someone mentioned you bring their favorite Channel, I watch a lot as well and very few other channels teach and entertain like yours. Wondered if you had a frost yet or freezing temps. Here in panhandle of Florida we will be getting out first cold weather next week with temp -2 to -4 C with even lower wind chills
Hi and thank you. Tropical style gardening is my biggest passion and I also love the design and landscaping side of it too. If people watching can learn or be inspired by any of the videos or tours I do that’s a bonus. My garden plans are getting bigger day by day at the minute. I’ve had a few days of -1.5 Celsius so far and lots of frosts next week. Nothing that will hurt my garden though. Cheers
@ hope your weather luck continues
Love your channel! Can you please label the plant name on the screen or mention in the description. Tysm!
Hi and thank you. It takes me quite a while to edit the videos when naming all the plants on screen so I don’t do it all the time. Sorry. I will try to do it more in the future. If you ever want to know any names you can comment what time you saw them on the screen and I can check and let you know. Cheers
Привет чувак везёть тебе 😊 мене очень нравиться твои папротники ❤...
Thank you.
It's stunning.
Thank you. I agree it really is a beautiful garden.
Your garden always looks great !!! no matter what time of the year you film it 😊
Thank you. I get lots of nice compliments but for me I feel I can improve it quite a bit so that keeps me excited about the garden. Cheers
I always loved your garden as is, but I am sure whatever changes you make will look great. Having lived in a wet winter climate previously, I agree you need a path heading to the back. You’ll probably end up kicking yourself for not having done it sooner. With the expanded sunny garden area, perhaps some room for a Jubaea somewhere?
Thank you. I think I always knew I needed a path but at the time with young children the lawn came first for them to play on. Now they are older it’s finally time to get the garden a bit more how I imagined it. I’ve been wanting and looking at Jubaea for quite a while. They are expensive here as I would need one that’s already got a bit of trunk to not look out of scale. I do feel it will happen I just need to budget it in at the right time. Cheers
Great idea! And I'd love to see the landscaping part on your videos.
Thank you. My plans get bigger every day so I think I will have lots to film. Cheers.
Yes please, I would very much like to see the process of redesigning the path and some more planting !
Thanks for the comment. I do now plan on filming the changes to the garden. Cheers
More planting space??!! YESSSS! I'm here for it! Your circular lawn has always drawn me to your garden - I've loved the way your evergreens frame it. But the introduction of a 'journey' through paths will elevate it, creating curiosity and intrigue whilst keeping the flowiness of the inner circle. Your channel has definitely hit the mark in inspiring others, thank you for sharing and I hope your projects go well!
Hi and thank you very much. I love the fact that more people are getting into this kind of gardening and hopefully with all the channels out there now people keep being inspired and more of these kind of gardens are created. Cheers
I will tell you something we both know: that lawn will disappear one day, it served its purpose so instead of making it smaller just go for it and start making that jungle-style garden, and instead of enjoying that small forest of yours edging with the neighbors, start with planting a pivot fast-growing tree right in the middle of the lawn, as a mother tree like in Avatar :), and make that maze around it, using Miyawaki method and one day enjoying under the canopy trees felling like being in Costa Rica or somewhere really in the jungle. Take a winter trip somewhere to the jungle in Central or South America, maybe you will have a different perspective. Thank you for your videos and the time you put into them. Happy New Year!
Thank you. I’m not quite sure I’m ready to loose all the lawn yet. I like the jungle look but I also like to see open spaces to appreciate the garden from different perspectives. Plus jungle gardens make it hard to plant sun loving plants as it can become very shady. Cheers
Yes, to videos about building hardscaping
Thank you. I will definitely film some of the construction as I go along. Cheers
Thoroughly enjoyed your videos this year and have taken a lot of inspiration from them. Would love to follow along with your build plans and redevelopment next year in addition to your regular walk-arounds.
Thank you. I’m really glad they have helped inspire you. The main reason I do these videos is to encourage more people into having the confidence to try these plants and this style of gardening. Cheers
I would like to see you landscape your garden, it gives us gardeners lots of new ideas, sure it will look great especially the pond area 😊
Thank you. I feel this project is getting bigger day by day but I’m looking forward to doing it. Cheers
What about a water feature in the middle of the circular lawn? Whatever you do it’ll look great.
Thank you. I’ve done a few designs today and one has water in what is at present the lawn area so it may happen. Cheers
Hi. Love your videos. Of all the tropical garden channels I find yours the most inspirational for what I’m trying to achieve. Edging and paths is on my to do list this year and I’d love to see how you do it. Thanks very much
Thank you. I really appreciate your comment. I’m definitely going to show some of the Construction of the new work and I will try to include the paving. Cheers
Looking forward to seeing the new path. I agree a lawn in the UK at winter is a total mess and a waste of area
Thank you. I’ve spent most of the morning drawing different designs. Each time I do one I make the lawn a bit smaller 😂 Cheers
You mentioned that you have good nurseries now with more plants. Do you know of any in the Pacific Northwest of USA? We are in Seattle, Washington and surprisingly we don’t have many. A few small family ones here and there, none really specializing in hardy tropicals. Any good mail order places with bulbs/tubers….?
Hi. Sorry I don’t know of any nurseries your part of the USA. If you watch Texas Tropics channel on TH-cam. He used to live in Portland Oregon and I remember him mentioning nurseries in the past so he may be a good one to ask. Cheers.
Looking forward to next year’s plans. I would find it interesting to see the actual landscaping for ideas and how to actually do it. Love the idea of rocks giving another texture to a garden, I’m hoping to create more texture in my garden next year and add some more plants of course!🌴🌺🌳
Hi and thank you. I think I’m going to film some of the landscaping projects as I think design and landscaping really is the backbone to a great garden. Hopefully I can start soon. Cheers.
Love your lawn looks so lush in summer I think a path will look great save walking over lawn keep it in great condition.i love my lawn I’ve done a round lawn like yours after watching your videos.i do cheat and get my lawn treated 4 times year and it’s absolutely lush.
Hi and thank you. I like a nice lawn as well. I like the idea of having that open space to see the garden from all angles. Thanks for the comment. Cheers
Hi, your garden always looks great. However, I do think your idea is good. Looking forward to seeing it all done at some point 😊
Thank you. Hopefully I can get started soon.
Looks like a great idea. I always thought the lawn looked a little too big but it could just have been the camera showing that as the plants looked a little too pinned back. Saying that you have one hell of a beautiful garden. Another thought is have a architectural palm in the dead centre of it as a show piece.
Hi and thank you. I agree with you that the lawn looked to big for the scale of the garden. Now my children are older I don’t need it to be as big and I’m looking forward to making the changes. I have thought about a Jubaea Chilensis. In the middle of the lawn in the past. So many ideas in my head. Cheers
Yes that was what I was thinking of. Might be a bit expensive to get a decent size but you could put a couple of fast growing deciduous exotics and some rocks round it til it gets a bit bigger. Hard to to tell the size of lawn but would only take up to half metre all round off at first to see how it looks as it’s easier to take more off than add it back. Looks like a great project to do and look forward to seeing the progress
Like idea of the path and the wider border . That will look great mate .
Thank you. I feel it will make a huge difference to the garden. Hopefully I can get it done by spring. Cheers.
Thank you.
Great stuff! Looking forward to seeing the progression. Happy new year👍
Thank you.
Yes please, love your videos. Will look forward to seeing how you construct your paths and pond area.
Thank you. I really appreciate the comment. Hopefully I can film the process. The ponds a bit of a learning curve for me but I’m looking forward to doing it. Cheers
the new plans sound great, it would be interesting to see the process! i think it will really transform the space. i also love having loads of rock and hard structures around the garden
Thank you. I’m really looking forward to making the changes this year. I just need to get the design right and then I think I’m going to get started. Cheers n
What a work of art! ❤ if you didn't tell us in you were in the UK, I would say it looks like you are in a tropical/subtropical climate zone. Where in the UK are you located?
Hi and thank you. I’m in Peterborough which is north Cambridgeshire. Well away from the coast but I’ve been lucky with a few mild winters recently which helps. Cheers
This garden is in Europe? With this type of plants? Kudos to the dedication and hard work of its owner
Hi and thank you. Yes this garden is in the U.K and it shows what can be created over time if you have passion and dedication for this style of gardening. Cheers
Beautiful garden, I hope the bad weather has done too much damage.
Thank you. I think the garden is fine. Most of it will be now protected for winter now. He’s been doing it along time now So this garden has faced some Bad weather in its time. Cheers
Absolutely fantastic. From the canopy to the koi pond to the structures and accent lighting. I appreciate the way you walked through it and explained how a lot of it were the same plants used over and over. It really gives inspiration.
Hi and thank you. I agree it really is a fantastic garden with so much inspiration. I think this garden is one of the best self created, private gardens I’ve visited. I also have a couple of other great gardens on my channel like Oak Barn Exotic Garden and Simon and Harriet’s garden Which are also very inspiring. They are all very different but show mature tropical style gardening in the U.K. at a very high standard. Really appreciate your comment cheers.
Really nice 🤩
Thank you.
amazing, like from hungary :)
I’m glad you liked it. Cheers
You have had right,, your garden is more better now! Congraturation :) !
Thank you. I feel my garden is getting better but still lots of room for improvement.
@tikitropicals65 you know this, but it is very nice alredy now (Sorry for mistakes i m write from hungary)!
Lovelly garden, great channel. i would hate to think what a lot of those mature trees cost in the UK. I understand what you are saying, I think the look you are trying to get is the thing that everyone ties to understand and achieve - I spend a lot of time trying to work it out myself, trying to work out where to buy plants, and I live in SE Asia.
Hi and thank you. The mature trees would be expensive but I planted most of them about 13 years ago from much smaller plants. I love searching for new plants and changing the garden it keeps it interesting for me. Cheers
The fatsia polycarpa can be propagated by cuttings.
Hi and thanks for your comment. Yeah I have grown various Fatsias from cuttings in the past. I like to grow them from seed as well If possible hoping that one day there may be some natural variation that you don’t get from cuttings. Cheers
Nice work! Looks amazing ❤ What’s the size of that seating area gazebo?
Hi and thank you. It’s approximately 4 metres x 3.2 metres. Cheers
How do these plants survive the winter? Does this area not have freezing temperatures? Beautiful garden.
Hi. Yes it does get freezing temperatures. Most of the plants can take the cold and some are brought into a heated greenhouse for winter. It’s about finding plants that look real tropical but have evolved in colder climates so they can survive our winters and then add a few really tropical plants to complement the look. I have a few gardens like this on my channel including my own. Cheers.
This is only my second winter growing a Tropical style garden, and like you said.. people do worry about getting through winter months. Having plants that work with our climate is deffo the way to go,,, great video and your garden still looks amazing 👍
Thank you. I’m glad you liked it. I think when people start this type of gardening theirs a tendency to want as many different plants as they can and lots of the big leaved tenders which are great but you need an evergreen backbone as well to give it all year interest and make the overwintering process more manageable. Cheers
I really admire your Dicksonia palm trees. How do you protect them in the winter months? Thanks for the great videos.
Hi. How you protect them really depends where you live and your climate. For me I start by using horticultural fleece in the top to protect the new growth from frost. If it gets colder like -5 Celsius = 23. Fahrenheit then I will wrap insulation or fleece around the top foot of trunk and more fleece in the top. Once it warms up I take the protection off again. Lots of videos out there on how to protect them on TH-cam. Cheers
Watched your video again and appreciated your comment about learning how to make your garden tougher against cold weather. It’s true learning what you can plant and leave on ground is so important and otherwise you have to learn how to protect or bring in the tender plants. Every area is different and it takes experience to know what you can get away with
Yes lots to take into consideration when starting a tropical style garden in a colder climate. From winter lows to summer highs. Knowing your soil type and microclimates in your garden as well. I think with experience we learn which plants can make up the backbone of our gardens and then add the more tender ones to give a bit of a wow factor. Cheers
where in UK? does it snow? obviously not. i always thought that UK, the whole country snows
Hi. The U.K. tends to get cold and wet winters but it doesn’t snow very often in most areas. The north of the U.K. can get very cold and is more likely to see snow than the south The garden in this video has had snow this week so some plants would have been brought into a heated greenhouse to protect them. Thanks
Read you comment about zone 8 US vs UK and you are right here in panhandle of Florida neat city of Pensacola we are on 8b/9a cusp. It is much hotter June To August 95-105 F at times. Also great humidity which tropical love. Out challenge here is we have had over last couple of winters 4-5 nights that go crazy with temps to low 20F for a few hours plus couple times 20-30 mph winds which is a real killer. So you have to protect for those few nights when rest of winter which ends March 2 usually. Rest of winter nights are low 40s F which is not an issue. Enjoyed you sharing your challenges
Hi. Yes the zones give a minimum temperature comparison between the U.K. and the USA but the climates are quite different. I imagine it’s similar over there between the different states. I’m not sure but I would imagine your zone 8b may face different challenges to a zone 8b in Oregon for instance. It’s good to be able to compare but realistically it’s about learning our own climate and challenges. Cheers for the comment.
Thanks for the update look forward to watching your videos and amazing garden and plants. Built a veranda this which was a well made from a company from Holland and already noticing the difference with the plants left outside and the ones I have brought under cover so hopefully won’t have try and squeeze too many plants in the greenhouse this year.
Thank you. Yes a bit of overhead cover from the wet and cold can go a long way plus it makes it easier to wrap them if they are in the dry. Cheers
Your area is plant hardiness zone 8b
Hi. Generally I think I’m classed as zone 8. My coldest temps in this garden have been -12 Celsius. In the U.K. the temps may be the same as zones in the USA but we get much wetter winters in general and don’t get the summer heat so a zone 8 in the U.K. can be very different to a zone 8 in states. Cheers.
@ Your garden looks good even in November . I like the design , We’re 9a here on the south east coast of England and -1c last night . I have two big blue agave as well as a few sago palms growing in the garden. I do use plant fleece to protect from frost but you can grow a lot of different types of plants down here but it’s work to keep them healthy but it’s worth it .. Winters are getting wetter but we’re getting less frost than we use to get thirty years ago and the plant growing season has extended by a month I read.
Your garden still looks stunning 🤩
Thank you.
Great job to the both of you! ❤ from Georgia, USA
Thank you.
I like the look a of a natural garden too, but it can be quite difficult to do successfully. Achieving that balance of not making it look haphazard or messy is tough but I am sure you will figure it out. I know you want to fill all those gaps under large growing plants/tree with taller things, but I personally like the look of those open areas, as they are like small viewing windows into the jungle. If you put some larger plants in then you limit the amount of plants you are able to see in one view. Think of each of those gaps like your lawn area on a smaller scale, it allows you to take in mini vista.
Hi. I appreciate what you’re saying regarding the natural look and it will be a bit of trial and error. I think using good architectural foliage will really help and a greener palette too. I think once I’ve thinned some of the plants out that I no longer want I will get a better feel for how I want to use the spaces. I don’t want it to feel like a tropical style garden anymore. I want it to feel like I’m somewhere truly Tropical if that makes sense. Easter said thank you done. I always appreciate your feedback. Cheers
Утро доброе потресаюший меня очень нравиться папротники слов нема ❤...

Alstromera indian summer is on my list for next year. I am never happy with my garden either ;-) it keeps me busy though! Looking great, thanks for sharing.
Thank you. Yeah the Alstroemeria is a really good plant. Just watch for the slugs and snails as they like to eat this plant especially when young. Cheers
I think words like amazing and stunning are thrown around a little too easily these days, but definitely not when it comes to this garden! Hard to think of words to describe it better, actually! Is that a Solanum quitoense under that Schefflera macrophyla? It almost steals the thunder!
Hi and I totally agree. It really is a garden full of interest and passion. Yes it is a Solanum next to the Macrophylla. Cheers
