Siiick. Just saw this, going to go make a cup of coffe and veg out to this on the lay z boy.
i'm one of the few that has a original copy of the book i had it for years it's still in a nice mint condition.
that's rad. I know there are still copies out there floating around and I hope to come upon one some day. But not from an online jackal haha
Thanks for the flip through. You’re right, the “spreads” make every genre look fascinating.
Loved the video. I’m not familiar with a lot of US punk, but definitely got the vibe. And a nice range of music too. When’s part two?
Thanks! The punk collection definitely goes world wide in the future episodes. I figured I'd do one of these record videos once a month
Love this look at your music journey. Two things that have been a constant in my life, music and reading. Really do dig your channel. And it is not so much the content but how you present it. But I really came here to say that Pink Floyd's Animals is the only album to ever give me nightmares. When I was young I would spend the night at my friend Deano's house. He shared a room with his older brother who always had the turntable cued up with rock and metal albums that would play all night long ( I liked that and it became a habit of mine, but more or less just falling to sleep with the headphones on). But that damned Pink Floyd album f'd me up. Some of the strangest and worrying images I've ever dreamed. It would be years before I could appreciate anything by Floyd.
First off, thanks so much for the kind words! Animals does have a nightmarish quality to it, eh? I think it's the pig squeals. Also, it is heavily a Roger Waters album and his stuff always felt dark, minor key and cold. They were something else.
The one that did it for me was the first Minor Threat EP. Five seconds into "Filler" my DNA was rewired. I instantly stopped smoking cigs and traded in every piece of music I had, searching, like you said, for anything that "looked" punk or HC (grabbing several you showcased here).
Minor Threat changed a lot of people's heads! That EP was perfection and they were saying all kinds of things that were inspiring and different and angry.
You're a badass, Nick. Love this format of the telling of your musical journey. Rush is one of the greatest bands of all time. Maiden > Priest. Also, you were going to a Fugazi show the year I was born, HA. Cant wait for more of these vids.
ha! Now I would agree with your assessment that Maiden was better than Priest but back then it just wasn't clicking for me.
oh, man, I grew old before my time, being raised on classic rock radio. I still remember my mom laughing at me as I sang along to ACDC lyrics I couldn't understand, driving back from a dentist appointment. You talk about Soundgarden, but Audioslave is my own. Finding those three Audioslave albums after getting nostalgic for ATV Off-road Fury IV was like rediscovering fire. I would listen to Revelations every day on the way home from work.
That's awesome! I think around the time of Audioslave I was deep down in the punk years but I did love Rage Against the Machine. It's interesting to hear how often people who came up a little bit behind me often mention how they first heard some music through video games. I hear the Tony Hawk games mentioned a bunch. I mean, there still is no Google at the time so it has it's own romanticism.
Black Flag ''Loose Nut'', Crass ''Penis envy'', The first Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I. ''Dealing with It'', The Exploited ''Jesus Is Dead'' EP, all The Meatmen (Turbo Lover, parody of Judas Priest, I hope you have that), and amazing compilations like ''We Wont Be Your Fucking Poor''. So much souvenirs... You should definitely keep this up Nick.
Hell yes. I have a few of those. I saw The Meatmen open for Gwar once. It was amazing.
I loved this. You better do the rest of the videos because I need the punk deep dive.
haha awesome Duncan, thanks! I do plan on doing some more. It was too much fun not to.
yes sir, I was smitten by Sabbath as a D&D dude too :) ... still am... thanks for the great video mate, very interesting.
Black Sabbath is so D&D that it should be mentioned in Appendix N
I found this book in the wild a while ago. I might have to crack it open. Different cover art, but still pretty neat
It's a great read!
"Care Bear record player . . . I promised myself I wouldn't sing on this . . ." 😆 this is a great video! I love hearing about how people got into different genres of music. And yes, The Misfits Walk Among Us! One of the best!! The Misfits and The Ramones got me into "classic" punk rock and totally changed my life. I played in a variety of different bands but I was in a punk rock band for close to 10 years.
Sam, I'm going to need the name of that band. Are there any recordings online?!
@@TheBookGraveyard We cut a rough demo right when I joined and it's (unfortunately) the only thing we recorded the whole time we were together. I'll send it to you
Uncanny. Your musical journey mirrors mine almost to a T. The only deviation is Pink Floyd; never been a fan.
They are kind of the odd one out there. I would guess we're probably very similar in age.
Yes! More punk rock storytime videos, please! But be careful, Nick. Whenever you say something nice about post-Danzig Misfits, Glenn gets a little fatter and more miserable.
haha aww poor Glenn.
Pretty amusing, Nick. Being an old fart, I listened to Alice Cooper and Blue Oyster Cult as a teenager. Strangely enough, I also own most of the punk records you showed. I suggest you buy a copy of The Suicide Commandos "Make a Record". Straight up Minneapolis punk. Saw them many times and I can't even tell you how many times I saw Husker Du. My favorite punk concert? Clash/David Johansen/Undertones at the St. Paul Civic Center in 1978 or 1979. I was drunk that I fell off my chair three times onto some poor guy in a wheelchair that was seated behind me.
Stiv! Of course you are also punk. You're my man. I have heard the name Suicide Commandos before but never heard them. I'm listening to it now. It rules. I would have loved to seen Husker Du back in the day. Were you at the recording of the Land Speed Record?! Whenever I hear St. Paul Civic Center all I think of is that Replacements song. That's one hell of a time to be going to shows with punk just starting.
Thank you for sharing!
Just that thumbnail alone it’s a nice collection
Turns "a blind, black eye". Love it.
Excellent! I need to read more juvenile delinquent books.
I've only read a few but they've all been great. They're hard to find
I love the old sci-fi channel oringinal movies.Good cheese
They were! They became a little too self aware later on but at first they were great
The guy on The Gang Girls cover looks like Ty Burrell. 0:30
haha yeah, he does!
Nice reads...surprising nuggets.
I was very surprised by The Gang Girls
This was great! 100%
Rocky Marciano was the only undefeated heavyweight champion , his trademark was to act like he was exhausted almost beaten , then to suddenly strike and knock out his opponent. The greatest of them all in my opinion. 🥇🥊
he was a brawler!
This is a pretty impressive episode! The pecking order of choices is wonky, but it's your list, and I think it's great. Happy New Year!
haha! Jim, what are you saying here? I have bad taste? ha. Just kidding. We all know I have bad taste.
The same has been said about me; I have taste, it's just all bad. 😁 I really enjoyed this one, Nick.
"Thumbs. Thumbs. We're Knife fighting." Duck, duck, goose must have been a whole different game in your grade school.
Love the review! Definitely some interesting reads. The Gang Girls sounds fairly hilarious.
oh yeah, it has it moments. Especially if you have a sick sense of humor haha
More next level book reviews! 😆 Should I be enjoying them this much? 🤔
Thanks Jim! I hope so.
Great reviews, Nick. Please keep them coming.
Thanks Josh!
Do you have any Nick Carter “Killmaster” spy books? I read one and didn’t like it, but I’ve heard they are pretty good. I’m currently reading the very first Carter book which was serialized in a weekly newspaper in 1886. So far it’s good!
I have a few and even a radio drama record of some Nick Carter but I haven't read any. I was so surprised to find out the character went back that far.
Just as I was recovering from "You’re my gash" you go and hit me with "This is a non-r@cist thumb". Good grief, Nick, I think I'm gonna pass out...
anti-racist thumbs up only!!
Re-watching the video again. This is the hardest I've laughed in a while. I lost it at One White Thumb Up
Yes! Hey, all I got are these white thumbs.
😊
These sound awesome. I need to find some juvenile delinquent books.
I've only found a handful in my years of looking but they are all like this.
A quadrilogy
Has Cold Front not come out yet? I can't find it on my kindle.
@katiecook6006 The book doesn't come out until the end of January/ early February but I don't know if he's doing a digital version.
Nice walkthrough, thanks 🙂
Great job on your articles Jules! I'm reading the MAQ UFO issue now and I'm on your UFO show series article. It's now on my to be watched list.
I love to read this novel called cold front one day i love horror novels but I write short stories on Facebook.
There’s a little sub-genre of “movies being produced in haunted/scary houses”. Satan’s Manor is the same premise as Simon Clark’s The Tower. Also, C. Dean Anderson’s Torture Tomb and David Sodergren’s Night Shot feature movies shot in a scary/violent house. Little Saigon series is by Nicholas Cain who wrote Saigon Commandos, Chopper 1, and War Dogs titles. Doomsday 1999 is cool as an action-adventure novel set in snow - I know how much you love snow!
Cool magazine!
Great haul! You always find a ton of great stuff. Satan's Manor sounds really cool
I used to romanticize those far northern places as refuges for calming peace and then I read about the people who live in Barrow, AK and the police reports and suddenly my affection for Arctic tranquility hit an avalanche. COLD FRONT sounds like it taps into the reality of those places and even though your review makes it sound interesting, I can’t spend time with characters like the ones you describe in the story. Those folks make me want to head for the hills with no forwarding address.
haha! Yeah, I'll pass on the arctic get away.
😺
The Falklands War is our Vietnam War.
Ahh. Yeah, see I should have known that. Embarrassing! hah
The magazine looks great. Picked up some possible gems yesterday - Bronc #1, Hammer’s Slammers, and Alone in the Ashes.
I've heard great things about Hammer's Slammers
Hammer's Slammers rocks.
What was your record label?
@@DuncanMcCurdie Night Animal Records nightanimalrecords.bandcamp.com/
@ oh sweet, that’s my Sunday listening sorted out. Do you know Dead Beat Records? I think they’re in your neck of the woods ish.
@@DuncanMcCurdie No, I hadn't heard of them. I've been kind of out of the game for a couple years
Great book recommendations for winter, here. Really like your video. Warner Lee is also known as B.W. Battin - I really enjoyed his horror chillders - please have a look at my reviews on Goodreads. Cheers Peter
6:29 John Keel also wrote The Mothman Prophecies 1975.... Point Pleasant, West Virginia alleged sightings back in 1966 and 1967. Keel went back to that town I think every few years. Visit the people and keep looking for the Mothman but never seen anything. Watched a TH-cam video about John Keel... interesting guy.
shhh... I was saving that fun bit of info for my MAQ flip through. hahaha. But yeah, I love the Mothman Prophecies and all things Mothman. I've been to Point Pleasant and drove over the bridge.
4:20 that is a Cool cover right there!!!!!
