Why We SUCK at Playing & Running RPGs (The New “Me” in 2023)

Why We SUCK at Playing & Running RPGs (The New “Me” in 2023)
As a GM, I like Milestone XP for exactly the reason given: it takes a load off of my plate. It also allows me to get more creative with my encounters because I don't have to worry about how much XP the encounter is worth. If my players insist on getting XP handed out per encounter, they're still going to get Milestone XP. It will just be fractions of the Milestone, based on how many encounters (minus special rewards) I have planned before they level. 😜
I have an addiction to Shadows... They are an encounter that can quickly spiral out of control if your party has weak companions with them and they realize they have to go back to the Shadows' lair later.
35:00 i feel like a way to better combat that is to have that player roll death saves and tell the DM privately so the other players know the DM isnt fudging it but it still has that level of unknown for the party
I always use milestone. I tell my players what needs to happened for them to reach the end of the milestone. "You will need to permanently solve this dragon problem for the village to be able to level up
Yes, 5e is a sucky superhero game!!
Glad I got this at Ollie’s for $3
I almost bought my kid the Campaign Case for Xmas. Found some discounted Reincarnated boxes instead. Thanks for the vid!!
Thank you so much! That really helped and its amazing video at that too ^_^ fun and informative 🤠
I think the criticisms for the D&D set, although a personal preference, if changed would take away the agency for DM and players. If it was spelled out to them, you may as well play a video game.
The whole point of a starter set is to make it easy to run
Nice fair and balanced review, thanks. I think this is a bit of an unfair fight. In a restaurant analogy the D&D Starter is more of a taste plate whereas Pathfinder Beginner is the entree. The D&D Starter is very expensive for what you get, it should be half the price - no character generation or maps? What were they thinking? A better comparison would be versus the new D&D Starter Essentials box. I'm buying my nephew both of them so he can decide which way he and his crew wants to go. Disclaimer: I am from Ye Olde Red Box/1E days and peaked at 2E blue books. I tapped out at 3.5E and PF, just too much powergamer superheroing for me. I have played the PF Otari intro and thought it was okay. I play much more Cthulhu, Alien, OSR Funnel/OD20 if I play anything at all.
A lot of the optional rules are old school rules that I do use. Especially secret roles for sneaking and search or perception checks.
The grid was very handy at a gaming convention. Small enough to carry easily yet big enough to support a few simple combats.
Great review! Thank you guys! Checking out the Dungeon Craft now....
Funky dice? Welp, time to adapt it to work with only D6s and D20s
Milestone XP can be S Tier for long campaigns
🍨🍩🌎🧱🗾🚲🦽🛶🚤🦼
How is this a problem. BG3 is a video game. DnD is a poorly written tabletop game. Two different things entirely. Like movies and books. You're comparing apples to oranges and claiming there's a problem with the apple.
If you store your books spine-side out, it's a lot easier to find the one you're looking for.
Just discovered this channel but it seems to be on hiatus? I hope more videos will be on the way
They have these in volumes now. I have both the books amd they come with codes for pdfs of them. Compendium of dungeon crawls vol 1 and vol 2. Cheaper to buy them then the individual modules. And they are also available on roll 20 if you prefer that.
Late to the party, but according to Milestone level-up. I've collected some small adventures over the years. A bunch of them are level 3, level 4 etc. Some say they will level you half the the from level 3 to 4. I would tell my players I have these 3 different small level-3 adventures, when the are completed you are level 4. I could connect the the adventures to a campaign, or you could run an episodic West Marches style of game...
Ill tell you the problem comparing the two products, one has a cooler name. You get DRAGONS! STORMS! SHIPWRECKS! implied by one of the boxes, the other is just trouble under Otari. Pathfinder is a better game, but DnD has better branding.
Wow savage worlds, probably the jankiest system on the planet with crit chances that go down if you get more proficient. Could i interrest you in some high quality horsedung perchance? Also an amazing solutions you are a hero by getting an additional d6 "per definition".
Wizard rolls 20 not kicking the dost? Sure you put your leg through the rotten wood. My nat 1 and 20 are crits but not allways success, but something funny will happen.
Slow healing (no long rest full healing) is not in the dmg. I believe I was first with this house rule. I have used this rule for years at my table.
there is the "gritty realism" variant resting rule edit and it literally is, they even cite the page....
@@xolotltolox7626gritty realism rules in the dmg changes short rest to 24hours and long rest to 1week. That is completely different from my rule where short rest is 1hour rest for each hit die rolled and long rest is still 6 hours but no auto healing.
@@FrederichLarsen yeah, i know, but they literally cite the page it is written in on the DMG
I am just getting back in to TTRPGs after almost 30 years. I am going the Pathfinder rought.
lol DCC RPG is the GOAT but jazz > metal
Savage Pathfinder is my go-to for fantasy settings now.
Have different opinions from you, but thx for a great thought experiment 😃
Stick numbers on bottom of pugs reverse size.
Doing XP based leveling up just reminds me of the SouthPark World of Warcraft where they butcher boars til they hit max level. Milestone all they way baby.
I tried running DCC due to your video and you are correct! It’s amazing! The funnel became a core memory for the players and myself!
Not having critical tables at D or a brand new F tier is the sole reason I disliked this video. I’m convinced that if a DM used this it’s a huge red flag
Chaosium has published several other “choose your own adventure” style solo adventures for use with Call of Cthulhu 7e in the “Alone Against The…” series. They’re all quite good.
I love DCC
The XP system is, essentially, a pacing mechanism; you should face so much stuff before you level. The only point that matters is the one that achieves the next level. After a while running, you know how fast you want the game to advance.
I start at level 3 because I think all characters should get their subclass from the get go.
I have an idea for an encounter that is less encounter and more interaction. The part hears of a grand archive deep in the desert that the town they are visiting rest on the edge of, and treasure trove of knowledge known locally as the Sapphire Oasis. Should the party decide to investigate this lead, then they will have to fight a few desert worms, maybe meet some wandering nomads. Eventually the part come upon a rather large rock formation, the crumbled remains of a mountain perhaps, and in one of its sides they find this beautifully constructed facade. Many arched windows with grand balconies, and in front of the large doorway sits a group of dragonborn. They are all of the blue variety, most dressed in armor, but a few in fancy robes. The party can be greeted by this group and led inside by one of the robed individuals, and as they travel down the corridor they notice a number of small doors on either side and catch a glimpse of a few kobolds running here and there through these small doors, most of whom are carrying scrolls and books, and all painted blue with splotches of their natural colors showing through. After they walk the length of the hallway, they enter a large high-ceilinged chamber that is a few hundred feet across and even further in depth, with a set of desks placed parallel to each other to make a path towards a dry fountain filled with a great many gold and platinum coins as well as precious gems, and on either side of this fountain appears to be a waterfall frozen in time carved out of gleaming sapphires, that boarder a greater waterfall of gold that seems to flow unmoving from the darkened space above. The dragonborn host at the desk welcome you and inform your party that they are permitted to search freely through the vast libraries after you have each made a donation, gesturing towards the fountain. The party can then ask the DM to learn about almost anything they could want, including formulas to higher level spells than they can actually cast, or to copy down spells they have wanted but haven't been able to find yet. No armor or weapons as any in the archive are for display only. If the party choose to stay around or investigate closer, then they will come to realize that the proprietor of the Sapphire Oasis is actually an ancient blue dragon that rest on a pedestal overlooking the donation fountain and it is his front paws and chest that make up the sapphire framed golden waterfall. This blue dragon is a good character that will tell the party that his name is Salafir Orises (Sal-a-fear Or-is-sis) which has been mis-spoken into being understood as Sapphire Oasis. He welcomes all to his lair to gain knowledge and is particularly interested in anyone that can donate further knowledge or can help to preserve the most ancient tombs and scrolls that are in danger of falling apart. Very much a rip-off of the Library from ATLAB, but with a twist. And there is a whole army of dragonborn that have devoted themselves to servitude of Salafir, known as the Servants of Sapphire. As well as the massive hoard of kobolds that worship Salafir as their god. The dragonborn's will come and go across the land to further expand the archives and to learn of ways to better connect it to the rest of the world, and all are welcome to come and study or present new material to the archive, usually taking a few days of research to make sure it isn't already there.
You nerds are dorkier than the dungeon dudes. Jesus why cant you people just be socially normal and not scare away people interested in gaming but fearful of people like you
Have you looked into Savage World's Deadlands ? Been a While, going to do more videos ?
About the Secret Death Saves. Easy fix. Only let the one doing the saving throws to know the results. Or better make him roll behind the DM screen, only the player and the DM will know. So nobody will distrust the DM. And as an additional rule to this. If the player rolling the Death Saves makes it apparent to the other players or tell them what his status. Punishes him with ONE automatic FAIL death save. because his character is inconscient so it would be metagaming letting the others know. That's how i see this.
Good video but that "You're a judge not a game master" bit was cringey. Regardless of whatever Semantics Goodman wants all of the advice you just said is exactly the same advice I've heard about any TTRPG referee/DM//GM/Keeper/Storytelling blah blah since the 1990s. Also I find it funny given the internal logic provided (do what you want with it -> renames Judge to Game Master 😊)
I simply increased the cap for fall damage to 150 d6 since it's about 1500 ft when you hit terminal velocity and stop accelerating. So have fun trying to survive 516 points of fall damage
Once every session the players have the right to hit the DM.
I played with a watered down version of gritty realism where basically every 7th short rest (full nights sleep) was a long rest. Best game I’ve ever played. Everything was more difficult and we actually had to worry about preserving our abilities for when we needed them, which I think was the crux of the fun for us. Hit die actually mattered. That being said, the party was a monk, a fighter, a warlock, and a rogue, and we started at level 5. Nobody was stretching 3 spell slots over a week of in game time.
One huge question I have is WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR SHIRT? But also I love the explainer and thorough coverage of all that DCC (and MCC!) has to offer! I went to GenCon '24 recently and took advantage of Goodman Games awesome sales they were having there and bought the core rulebook and some other items ("weird dice", The Music of the Spheres is Chaos, the MCC rulebook). Definitely like a blast from the past for me, since I've been playing RPGs since '79-ish.
We use the lingering injuries when you hit zero, so if a player keeps popping up in combat he gets another injury lol!! I wanted even rule that the second injury is rolled on that table with a d6 instead of a d20, making limb loss very likely…
When I started to DM I hated tracking XP so much. I switch to level up every 3 sessions, and it felt like a good balance. 70 sessions later I have never looked back.
In my opinion, that can be kinda fast. I usually like there being more sessions between levels, the higher in levels you go because if you do a level up every 3 sessions in a pre-written module, you'll probably out level the module pretty fast
That's how Pathfinder Society does it.
Damn :( I feel scammed for buying D&D starter set and trying to get some terrain stuff for the adventure because this will be our first adventure, I will be running the adventure as a first time DM and my players too so I had to buy a lot of stuff separately, spent a lot that I thought and seeing how PF has everything in their beginners box now I feel like I want to shift to that ;(
