The Road-Rail Cane Transport of Cairns! | The Cairns Railfan
Hello everyone! Welcome back to a new video which sort of acts as a follow up to the previous one where we explore the unique road-rail operations that have for the first time commenced at northern Cairns in Queensland, Australia. The 610mm (2ft) gauge rail network here is used by the Mulgrave Sugar Mill located in Gordonvale, 10 kilometres south of Cairns. The mill is owned by MSF Sugar where Mulgrave has an approximate track coverage of 200 km in length servicing sugarcane fields from northern Cairns as seen in this video and south to Babinda where it's connected to the South Johnstone Mill network which continues further south. The mill operates their sugarcane trains 24/7 during the June-December crushing season when the weather permits.
Unfortunately; record breaking floods struck Cairns in late 2023 due to the effects of Cyclone Jasper which ending up causing the collapse of Mulgrave Mill's bridge over the Barron River serving as the only rail link from Redlynch to the cane fields north of the river which was astonishing considering the fact the bridge was constructed with flood resistance in mind.
Due to this; Mulgrave Mill had to act fast with no quick re-build of the bridge in site and so quickly built road-rail ramps (also known as roll on-roll off ramps) at Redlynch still connected to the rest of the Mulgrave Mill network and at Barron; on the now isolated line north of the Barron River including a locomotive placed there as well to assist with shunting the cane bins on the separated line.
After the northbound empties train comes up from Gordonvale like usual; the locomotive kept in the Redlynch Depot at any given time is put to work shuffling empty and full cane bins between the depot and the ramp built in the cane fields of Redlynch with trucks constantly moving empties and fulls between that ramp and the one built on the now isolated line in Barron. As mentioned previously; a locomotive has been placed there as well to shunt the empties and fulls that end up there to assist the trucks and that's what we'll be taking a look at today! I hope you enjoy!
Maps in the video were made by me; with OpenStreetMap as a background, Google My Maps to create the rail line map data files and Microsoft Powerpoint for the labeling.
Intro and Outro Music was created by RKvc and is called "Fused" and was made for the TH-cam Audio Library. Here is the link to the song: th-cam.com/video/Fa7QlpWhed0/w-d-xo.html

      @@xbx.trains2192 It’s unclear at the moment but currently an auction is up for sale of the Mossman locomotives and spare parts for them as well. I can see Mulgrave potentially taking an interest in Mossman’s Comeng locos as Mulgrave loves Comengs and even was interested in acquiring some of Tully’s Comengs at one point. The sugar mills in Fiji like to buy Australian sugarcane locomotives so potentially they may be interested; however their sugar rail industry seems to be dying out so I’m unsure. Mackay Sugar might be interested in taking back the Clyde Engineering loco of theirs that Mossman has had for a while. As for Mossman’s large EMB locomotive, ‘Daintree’, I am unsure of where it may end up. South Johnstone uses a few EMB locomotives so they might be interested but they already have so many locomotives; I don’t know if they are interested in yet another one. Those are my best guesses for the moment; only time will tell where they end up going! The auction for Mossman’s stock ends on October 25th I believe.

    I sure hope they decide to re-build the Barron River bridge, as this idea seems too tedious an operation to be a long term thing. It might be OK as a short term thing, but re-building the bridge has to be the most viable option.

    • @thecairnsrailfan
      @thecairnsrailfan 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks! If you're just visiting Cairns and wanting to see cane operations in general I would recommend going to Mulgrave Mill itself in Gordonvale. You can either choose Gordon St to see all the mill yard action from above; or be at Rushworth Rd at the other end of the yard to be up close to the trains where most enter and leave through. There is near constant shunting in the yard at times so there should definitely be something! There isn't any forecasted rain at the moment except for Saturday so I don't think you'll have to worry about a wet weather shut down. Rushworth Rd is especially good if you want to chase some cane trains to various locations as well; almost all of Mulgrave Mill's trains enter and leave through there when heading / returning from south or north. Gordon St is seeing more action than usual since they are shunting Mossman Sugarcane dropped off by trucks and loaded into cane bins by front end loader there so every now and then trains cross there as well. If you wish to chase the trains as mentioned previously some kind of accurate mapping of the sugarcane rail lines are essential because of how utterly complex they can get in specific areas; usually closest to the mill is when mill networks are their most hard to navigate. I've made a map of all sugarcane railways in Queensland through Google Maps for anyone to use if need be; you can find it here: www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1UdDNF7SPSjDgLHLLNwgs7xTC0rv2hxU&usp=sharing It shouldn't be that hard to understand; coloured pin points mean a sugar mill and colour refers to what company owns the sugarcane railway line. For example Mulgrave & South Johnstone Mills are both owned by MSF Sugar so both are coloured bright yellow. I hope this helps, happy spotting!!

    Thank you very much for this most excellent video presentation which we have found of great interest along with the very professional commentary that accompanied it, for this we are most grateful. We were wondering if the automated brake van was formerly a locomotive. The reason why I think it may have been is the fact that it has six wheels and coupling rods rather than bogies which one would normally expect on such a unit. It is great that the locomotive is kept undercover in a shed rather than left out in the elements, it will certainly keep it in a better condition.

    • @thecairnsrailfan
      @thecairnsrailfan 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@johnsmart964 No problem, thanks for your comment! A few brake wagons out there are formerly locomotives; but most were built to be brake wagons in the first place. I assume they’re built similarly to locomotives so they can act like one when braking; as often they’re also loaded up with a lot of weight like a real locomotive would. Some of them have sanding capabilities as well. Mulgrave is one of the few mills that actually uses non-bogie brake wagons; other mills that use brake wagons tend to have much larger versions with bogies.

The fact that this is a rail motor that is used on this line means that the railway does not suffer from too much wear and tear as it is a lightweight design. The beauty of it being a stainless steel body means that it does not suffer from corrosion which will help to keep the maintenance costs down. Hopefully it will be able to get back to its full route sooner rather than later and it would be great if the line could get its sugar mill traffic back too as the more traffic the line has the more money will be there to provide for the railway's maintenance. We are most grateful to you for this pleasing video.

      @@johnsmart964 Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately I don’t think the sugar trains to port will start up again anytime soon; as much as I wish they would I don’t think the Tablelands Mill has interests in it they just do truck transport now. But like I said the branch to the mill is still classified as “open” so still receives occasional maintenance so the opportunity is always there! Also not sure if you saw my pinned comment but unfortunately it has been announced that Einasleigh - Forsayth section of the Tablelands System will not be reinstated for the rest of the year which is a real shame. It is actually unclear if it will reopen or not next year. Reasons stated include lack of funding and subpar maintenance alongside an apparent increase in damage this year thanks to Cyclone Jasper. Unfortunately relatively “small” closures such as this one haven’t been unheard of in recent times as Stanthorpe - Wallangarra was closed a few months ago now in south Queensland; reason being stated due to bushfire induced bridge damage.

    I'm the fitter behind the Cummins engines and Allison transmissions. Frenching the ditch light was from my car building days. Even the barriers between the cars is my design, we kept destroying the original lattice barriers on the curves the Sav travels on. I spent 7 years as their fitter from 2004. I sorted the wheel chair lifts from a company who had to get them from the USA because of how far they had to lower. I have many pictures of my time there

I assume the ditch lights were modern QR requirements? 2000 Classes in regular service didn’t have them; and I’ve noticed other 2000 Classes that have taken back to mainline running (eg. Outback Aussie Tours at Longreach and DownsSteam Tourist Railway) have fit marker lights as well. I think the Mary Valley Rattler’s 2000s also have the marker lights too.

    Sorry to viewers of this video if you get ads on this one. I didn’t put them there; copyright claim came in on the music that was played out of the passing ute in the Great Wheelbarrow Race segment and I believe has forced ads on the video which is a real pain! EDIT: For those wanting an update on the Einasleigh-Forsayth section reopening; well we just got the announcement that it will remain closed for the rest of 2024 and to me at least it’s unclear if it will re-open again next year in 2025 but let’s hope it does!

    May I say how delighted we are to see this most excellent video production and it was great to hear your narration has returned! These have to be the most impressive videos and always so clear and bright. It was a sad case to see at the railway station it had one of its shelters removed and only the frame was remaining, it was possibly receiving maintenance but I am sure that the passengers on that platform would appreciate being sheltered from the sun! It was great to see the steam locomotive at work, it will surely need that tank full of water as they will not be many places where it could obtain water as the old water cranes would been removed long ago. Thanks again for all the great work that you do, it is very much appreciated.

      Thanks for your comment, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I believe that un-sheltered spot at Toowoomba Railway Station has been like that for a while; as that lane isn’t used for passenger trains anymore and is commonly used as a spot to store diesels for maintenance runs and other maintenance related works. Toowoomba Railway Station is such a gorgeous station; probably one of the best looking in Queensland and a relic of a bygone rail era. Now it’s only served by a Queensland Rail passenger train 4 times a week which is the Westlander doing its twice a week service from Brisbane to Charleville where it’s usually there late in the evening or early in the morning. Other than that; heritage passenger services may use it on their runs which is a common sight in the southwest between Ipswich and Warwick where as you mentioned they usually always carry water tanks as well due to lack of water tower / cranes in the modern rail era! Thanks again for your comment!

Cairns Kuranda Steam (who operate The Savannahlander passenger service and the Cairns Rail cement shunts as seen in this video) is actually owned by Mainline Steam Heritage Trust in New Zealand who own DJ1229. One wonders if this class if train will continue to be constructed since Alstom have taken over Bombardier. Thank you very much for this excellent video presentation which is extremely well narrated. You had a good combination of passenger and freight. The train that passed which is based on the British Rail class 43 was interesting as where I live we have these still running in daily service, the last train operating company to do so, though there have been some sold for use in Mexico and others have gone to Nigeria for use as suburban trains! We hope that you did not get too wet but at least it kept it cooler and keeps the vegetation nice and green. Take care and we are most grateful to you for providing us with this excellent video.
