    Layout seems about right. I personally don't like the asymmetrical lifts. Have one at my work. The rear arms are often way too long for many vehicles, and the front ones too short for others. Sometimes you can shift the vehicle back farther, and sometimes the weight balance doesnt allow it. The ones that give me the most trouble are ford super duty, and many short wheelbase vehicles(or vehicles with odd shaped frames) We have both styles and I rarely if ever have those same issues on the equal length arms. Might I suggest cheating the hoist as far away from the wall as your footings will allow so you can pull axle shafts and such. Lastly, consider a diy extraction unit for grinding or weld fumes. Sometimes I put a furnace filter on a box fan next to where I'm grinding and it makes a huge difference, I can only imagine a downdraft table or actual extraction unit would be 10x better.

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good to hear some lived experience about an asymmetric lift. All of my vehicles have relatively short wheelbases, and I was under the impression that it's a pain to set up symmetric lift arms for short wheelbase cars. Like, you have to roll the car back and forth to be able to get both sets of arms under the car.I've been thinking about ventilation/exhaust and my current plan is to mount an 18" louvered fan in the gable of the wall behind the lift. It'll be up high, but I'm hoping that'll pull fumes out pretty well.

    • @FlawedOffroad
      @FlawedOffroad วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ yeah that rolling does have to happen sometimes on both style lifts. Especially on something like a two-door Jeep. The rear arms are so long on those asymmetrical lifts that even collapsed they are a pain to get underneath past the tire on short stuff. Generally I just stop short and get out while the engine is still running and kick the rear arms in and then pull forward to where I want to be then shut it off. Or toss in neutral. Honestly every single vehicle is different. I just know I have more problems on that hoist than I do the other ones but for most vehicles it works fine. Generally I only work on trucks Jeeps Broncos and stuff like that but get the occasional car or small suv so my sample size is a bit different.

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ thanks for this. I’m going to start looking at some symmetrical lifts now. With a symmetrical one, can you load a car facing either direction like the name implies?

    • @FlawedOffroad
      @FlawedOffroad 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ yeah I load them backwards on occasion. Useful when you need to go higher and have a ceiling constraint one way but not the other way. Not advisable on the asymmetrical lifts tho. Plus those ones are supposed to be angled in a bit. some are still installed straight. Do you have access to anyone with a hoist where you can take one of your trucks there and try it for yourself?

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I definitely wouldn’t use an asym lift backwards. I do like the idea of being able to load a symmetrical one either way, since it’ll be pretty tight to the back wall. Don’t know anyone local with a lift unfortunately.

    Why did you choose to use metal instead of stick built?

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I go over that a bit in the 2nd shop build video. Basically I have no contractor experience and dealing with all the engineering/permitting stuff seemed like a big hassle for a stick build. With this metal kit, I just paid a bit extra for the stamped drawings, and got my permit issued with no questions asked.

    Looks good to me. Put air compressor towards the garage door so if you need air outside it’s a snap. You might consider a 4- post drive on lift. You can park underneath if you have a car in the air. You would need to put it more towards the middle if you plan on working on lifted 4x4 trucks to have more vehicle head room. Something to consider

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yup, air compressor will go right in the front corner between the garage door and the man door. I went back and forth between 2 and 4 post lifts, and since the main goal is working on stuff and not necessarily storage, I'm pretty committed to a 2-post. I know it can be done with some extra jacks, but being able to unweight the suspension easily is a huge plus for the 2-post. Also, I have to do some welding on the body of the Land Rover, and I can't see how you'd pull a body off a frame with a 4-post.

    So when you get done and you start fitting out the shop, can you hang shelves on the wall or will it have to be free-standing shelving units? I would worry about th weight of the stuff bending the metal that is already supporting wall & ceiling.

    Size wise, it's pretty much ideal for a homeowner/DIYer. Layout wise, same thing, mind you me, personally, I would have brought the hoist out forward slightly more, but then, I work on larger/longer vehicles. Fab area, tool benches, yer pretty much right on point. I think the wall-light is a good idea, natural light can be brighter than most electrical lighting. The front area for extra parking and working on projects, perfect. Will also make a great shelter when the "bros" come over to "chat," And it rains. Add a stereo, a cooktop and the wife won't find you for days! Will also make a great hiding spot for her gift when she gets mad, cuz you were hiding for days and now you need to make it up to her...........

      Yeah, even with my smaller vehicles, I'm wishing I'd given myself an extra couple feet from that back wall to the lift. I think it'll work, but it's definitely tight. Really, what I should have done is had that entire half of the slab poured at 6" thick. That's how we learn, I guess.

    Buy industrial pallet racking. You can stack up high and put your work benches underneath. Use every bit of vertical space you can. Put everything on wheels, Store it all in a corner or under the pallet racking when not in use. Systems like LevRack are glorified pallet racking.

    Not familiar with your content outside of this project as this is what got me to subscribe. Love your details and editing! As for the layout, it seems you have a decent interest in fabrication. Keep in mind, if you decide to work with a fixture table, you’ll want 360° access to it. So it’ll be a floater around the shop or a staple in one area where you can walk around it. A bit inconvenient at times but entirely necessary depending on what you decide to build on it! Looking forward to more updates!

    • @tfrasca142

      Yeah, a nice fixture table is something I'd like in the future. Right now I have a Certiflat 2x3' welding table that's wedged into a corner of my current garage. I plan to use that table in the new shop, but on casters so it's more flexible. Still small, but at least it'll roll on the nice smooth floors in the new shop compared to the garbage floor it's on now.

    My shop is about 32'x64' with a 14'x14' door. I got a 4-post lift I keep right inside the door. This location makes for quick use when an oil & filter service is required, etc. I don't park vehicles inside the shop unless they are there for an extended service so that isn't part of my use. Instead, the back of the shop is available for fabrication in wood and metal. I really like the 4-post lift because I made filler panels to drop into the center which makes the lift into a massive worktable. I do wish for a 2-post lift though, deeper in the shop for those times I need to let the suspension hang - it is much easier to do that with a 2-post than a 4-post lift but it can be done. Get a lift rated at least 50% bigger than the heaviest vehicle you imagine you will ever have! Keep all work surfaces the same height for easy bridging of larger projects and put wheels under everything that rests on the floor. Wall cabinets are your friend. Hang bikes and canoes from the ceiling.

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Man, I wish I had that kind of space. I'd definitely go for a 2-post and a 4-post. There's no way I'm fitting more than one lift in mine, so 2-poster it is. One thing I have going for me is that bike storage will remain in the current garage, so in theory, this shop should be filled only with shop-related stuff. In theory...

    I'd make all you can in the new shop moveable. welding cart(s), a bench on good casters (levelling casters let you set them solid or roll them at need) Maybe find a used pallet jack and make heavier things on a pallet style foot so they can be re-arranged at need. I like having a couple inexpensive folding tables that can be deployed for a project to keep things organized and off the floor but folded out of the way when not in use. I'm sure you already planned for power and air runs. Maybe a little overhand and pad for the compressor (if you want/have one) to live outside so things are quieter. Last, a loft would be good, OR maybe surplus pallet racking to make use of the vertical space. Storage Storage Storage! Looks great!

    As a mechanic with a smaller shop: - When you're placing the lift, consider the width required to remove axle shafts on a solid rear end. - Think about what you may be moving when you're at the tightest points. If you're pulling a wheel off that Disco, is your back already at the wall? Can you roll a wheel past with no worries, or a dolly? Adequate space isn't just a luxury, it's for your own safety. - Ventilation!! Especially if you're going to be reversing vehicles in, make sure you have adequate ventilation for exhaust and other fumes. - Make more bench space than you think you need. Consider rolling benches where possible, great for rearranging in the future or rolling under a vehicle for heavier jobs - Heavy duty racking is incredible, racking along the wall opposite the lift would probably be a more efficient use of space than a mezzanine or similar. - Put more electrical outlets than you think you need - If you run an air compressor, don't cheap out. Focus on a unit that can output solid CFM, the air tank is the easiest thing to expand later. Shop looks great so far, following this with interest! Great work.

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142 วันที่ผ่านมา

      These are great points, thanks. I did grab a spare driver side axle for the Disco and it'll come out with room to spare with the lift as-is. Ventilation-wise, my plan is to put an 18" louvered exhaust fan in the gable of the back wall, behind the lift. It'll be pretty high up, but I think it'll still help pull fumes out? I guess the ideal location for an exhaust fan would be at ground level right being the lift, but it would take up precious space right there. Thoughts on that?

      Our budget was 30k, but I think we’re over that now. The concrete ended up 3-4k higher than the quote, and I think that’s the bulk of it. I think after I finish the electrical, I’ll do a cost breakdown for everything so far.

      @ thanks for the input. Sounds like it’s still significantly cheaper than a stick built building. Appreciate the info! Good luck on finishing it up, can’t wait to see the progress.
