  • I didn't like any of the hitch options for the 944, so I made something custom. Now I can carry bikes with the Porsche and I don't have to drive the Land Rover to the trail head.

    Dude fantastic job and thank you a ton for sharing this....will be doing this as well God Willing....make sure you replace the fuel lines with something that can't catch on fire....a TON of 944's go up in flames....and google for the other causes too....I forget the other cause, but has to do with clutch line or brake line I believe....it can burst and catch on fire since under high pressure and by exhaust as well.

      Thanks, glad it was helpful. I’ve since replaced the fuel lines with some nice Rennbay ones.

    We must share a taste in cars! I used to own a 1989 944 S2 and currently own a 1994 Discovery 1 ES V8i.

      @@jamesross2373 I've always wanted one, but I've actually never had a BMW. My only other car right now is a '68 Volvo 142 that I'm building a 16 valve 2.3 turbo engine for.

      @@tfrasca142 That Volvo 142 looks so sick. I've thought of doing an engine build on my E28 but it's only a 520i so it would be quite the undertaking. Might stick to just doing a restoration.

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. Honestly, engine swaps are fun, but there's something to be said for just fixing a car up a bit and driving it the way it was built. I swapped an 8 valve turbo engine into the 142, and it was nice and simple and a blast to drive. That engine blew up and I probably just should have put another 8 valve in over a weekend and been back on the road. Instead, it's been three years and it's nowhere near done. What engine would you put in the E28? S54? @@jamesross2373

    Very cool I was considering building my own as well for my 924s, but I want haul a very small trailer so can take my Rally Tires with me to Rally-X events. Nice work

      Thanks. I think I’m going to add some more mounting points to mine so I can possibly tow a trailer or carry more bikes. My 944 will end up as a “safari” build eventually. Is your 924 lifted, or is that unnecessary for rally cross?

    Curious, what's the benefit of attaching the hitch to the bumper?

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With this design, it needs to be attached to the bumper for added stiffness. If it was only attached to the sheet metal on the body, it would flex way too much and probably rip the bolts out.

    • @mikeygarcia3017
      @mikeygarcia3017 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tfrasca142 what if I were to add a plate of steel on the backside of the sheetmetal?

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeygarcia3017 That's what I plan to do, in addition to keeping it bolted to the bumper. I just don't see how you could get the stiffness needed by only attaching it to the sheet metal. Another option if you don't want to bolt it to the bumper would be to build out some structure that ties into the bumper mounts on the body. Then you'll get some triangulation. I'd think the structure you build would have to be very stiff, since the bumper mounts are so far to the left and right of center. I'd like to see someone do it that way.

    • @mikeygarcia3017
      @mikeygarcia3017 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was planning on adding a hitch but don't have a welder so that's why I was asking about attaching it to the bumper. Maybe a plate mounted on the backside of the hitch mount will be enough rigidity to hold a bike rack. I do still worry about the sheetmetal like you mentioned. I haven't even gotten the car yet so this is all very preemptive!

  • @chromaventure
    @chromaventure ปีที่แล้ว

    You could have had the reinforced end of the hitch on the inside of the bumper

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to do that, but it would have looked weird with the angle of the bumper. Maybe.
