Chobe, Savuti and Khwai 2021: Episode 2 - We Camp at Ihaha & Experience Chobe!
Hi. I recently bought a Metalian Maxi, partly based on your excellent review. However, we opted for the Metalian tent and awning, thinking that it would be the best option as it is custom built by Metalian to fit the trailer. However, we are very unhappy with the Metalian tent. It is not sealed and we had spiders, mosquitoes and other insects in the tent. We are exploring other options, especially the ikamper. Our one concern with other tent/awning combinations is the lack of a seal between the tent and awning, which may allow water to run down the trailer side of the awning and onto the trailers kitchen area. This would make the kitchen and stove unusable in a rain storm. What awning do you have? How did you find it, and what was your solution to keep your trailer kitchen dry in the rain?
This is the best episode by far ❤️. Magic
Hi Just a quick question. What carrier did you use to get your stuff from the US?
Nice vid, thanks. Any issues with heat and dust in the tray? Im looking to do the same.
Thanks for sharing.
Howzit Jay, who do you use to make your bookings at Magotho?
Hi Jay and family, could you please tell me what September is like in Moremi and Khwai . Is there a lot of thick sand? Does a Bush Lapa manage it easily?
Hi Sue, its fantastic in Sep, you wont have any problems, the road are not really that sandy and its a great time of year to visit. Still dry so the game are always at the river and all the roads are dry and easy to drive.
Thanks for your reply. I need to bother you for one more question. Is a direct route up to Chobe Safari lodge a good option, or must we go back down to Maun, across to Nata on the A3, and then up the A33 to Chobe Safari Lodge.? Hope you can help. Thanks Jay
If I need to pay you for all the questions, just let me know. I would rather speak to you, who is experienced. Kind regards. Sue
Another amazing video
Glad you enjoyed it
brilliant . thanks so much for sharing

Another amazing video guys, great footage as always!!! Thanks so much for sharing. We are dying to camp at all three places - with any luck in 2025. Any advice for how we book at all 3 places @epicafrica? Wishing you all, peaceful , safe & blessed Festive Season 🎄🛍️☺️🥳
All of these camps are run by different operators, perhaps worth trying a trusted booking agency. We personally can recommend Ultimate Routes ! Www.ultimateroutes.co.za
The people at Symthonia are wonderful, as we enjoyed one night there a few years ago on our way back to Windoek. They offer super clean rooms and camping sites as well as a great dining. Will stop in again next trip. Great video as always, keep it coming and stay safe😊
Thanks! We had one of the best steak dinners there as well!
I must say, we have a small Eco River to charge all our cameras, but this is a great solution to add…. I might just add this as additional to our setup….. I really like there produce, including the solar panels…. They out perform all the other brands by far currently
Awesome video Thanks Much appreciated
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks nice one again As a family living in Botswana we like your videos especially as you do it as a family
Thanks for watching! We are really enjoying being out and about in the bush with our kids.
👌👌 awesome. What site number was that at Magotho 👏
Thanks! Its not a numbered site, it was overflow as they were overbooked
@ nice 👏👏

great vid. I may be going to mabua 01 next year. What camera trap do you use?
Our friend Brendon had one from Temu and it was actually surprisingly good! Ours is a bushnell
Awesome Jay. 7 months and counting and we off to Mapaya for 7 days
Enjoy the trip, Mpaya is a fantastic spot!
Thanks for sharing. Can you book Mogotho camping at Maun?
Thanks for watching! I think you can book from Maun. You need to go to the Khwai Development Trust Offices. If Google is correct, its located at 246 Mophane St, Maun, Botswana
@@EpicAfricaThank you very much! 🍻
Thanks for sharing this awsome footage again. Cannot get enough, only problem: want to get back to Botswana asap. Been to Zimbabwe this year , Zambia next year so I will have to wait a bit. What number campsite was that in Mogothlo and what other campsitenumbers can you advice there (secluded and good for predatorsightings)? Merry Christmas, from The Netherlands
Thanks for watching! We will be doing Zimbabwe (Hwange and Mana) and a little bit of Zambia (Lake Kariba) in 2025. This was not a numbered campsite - they were very overbooked and when we arrive someone was in our spot (which is not ideal but we ended up benefitting from an amazing site) They then took us to this random spot. We like campsite number 1
You mentioned you had run your Starlink from the Delta 2. I am looking at the Starlink Mini, with the hopes of being able to get out to the bush and still have full signal to allow me to work. I wont be using any big fridges or high usage appliances. With the Starlink / internet connection being my main concern. How long do you think it would be able to run consistently? Another question, do you have any issues using Starlink in SA? I think the Roam plan would be best as you can pause the plan when not needed, is that how you are using it? I'm thinking the Delta 2 would suite my needs better then installing a whole duel battery/ invertor system. Side note, I just watched your video where you mentioned the reasons for selling your Raptor, its such a pity about the fuel consumption. but good buy with the V6, I've recently bought a 2022 Stormtrac which I'm loving! it has a 140w charger in the cab and in the bin, which I would use to charge the battery station instead of the alternator charger. I would also get the solar charger as well if i get the Delta 2. Thanks!
Spending so much money on a well fitted out rig. Then compromise with some temporary power solution? Spend a little more and have a proper 12v system.
Really neat! Thanks for sharing🙌
You’re welcome, glad you liked it!
What is it that you can't use a power inverter
You can, but its not well integrated. This is fully automatic, much smaller and silent, and can reverse the flow to recharge your starter battery if needs be.
Looks like you have your ecoflow placed in the rear area of the truck. What path did you run the main cable from the engine back to the box of the truck?
I run mine in the back as well. Drilled a whole into the tub and came down by the back right wheel.
You can run the cable along the chassis and up into the tub making use of the holes that are already in the corners. Just make sure you use some sprag to protect the wire.
You mention coffee machine and a fridge! How long can this system charge a coffee machine and camping fridge - whilst camping/ stationary?! (ie. not 4x4ing/ overlanding) Regards, r
Depending on what you have running it should last 18 hrs maybe even a bit more and then with just an hours drive the 800w DC charger will have it at 100% again. If you needed more power then take a look at the Delta 2 Max!
Great review thank you, I have fitted 3 of these already to friends Fj’s. Can I ask did you connect your 800w AC direct to your secondary battery after your DC / DC charger? In the back of your pickup? I am installing my 800w this week but have been reluctant to connect it to my house battery in the cargo space of my Fj due to lack of information available. EcoFlow tech advised me to run to starter battery as they did not have the technical answer connecting to the house battery with DC / DC charger. Connecting it to the house battery obviously saves a long cable route in the vehicle. Your input would be much appreciated.
Also looking at the Alternator Charger as I already have a Delta 2. Want to use it in an off-road trailer though. So run Alternator Charger cable along chassis, cut, fit Anderson plug at tow hitch and connect to trailer and use part of cut-off original cable to again fit to Alternator Charger and Delta 2 in trailer?
Yes, that’s a clever way to set it up, I’d be interested to see how you manage the cable routing and connection.
All good and all, but let’s talk cycle life. Ecoflow does not have a great cycle life, Compared to a simple lithium battery with inverter setup, with dcdc charger or victron mppt setup. Ecoflow is great for a quick solution, or for those over landers with limited 12/220v experience. I cant justify paying the same price for something that would only give me 500 cycles. Yes the built in wifi is cool. But increase cycle life and I would buy 4. A good lithium battery and bms would give you 4000 to 5000 cycles. That’s 10% of a ecoflows cycle life.
EcoFlows cycle life is over 3000 so I’m not sure where you get 500 from? The warranty is also 5 years with I think is very reasonable given it covers all parts of the device, not just the battery. If you had to buy everything separately and install it, the cost would be well over R18k, so again in my opinion it’s good value especially considering it’s dual purpose and it’s quite compact.
Hi - you have the Wildtrak 3lt v6 which has a 400w inverter in the bak So why would you need the Ecoflow Alternator
Hello, yes it has a 400w inverter but that only runs when the car is one, it is very limited for what you need when our camping off grid. It also wont run the bigger appliances that you might want in your setup.
@@EpicAfrica Sorry are we talking at cross purposes?. I know that you can need the Delta 2 but what I do not understand i why I would need the Ecoflow Alternator Yes I understand that my inverter is 400w and this is 800w Do you feel that the the 800w worth the extra
@@redinzaWhen you switch the vehicle off, the built-in inverter becomes obsolete (unusable). Therefore he is using the EcoFlow as an alternative for when your vehicle is turned off and you are camping.
400w vs 2000w
great thank you
You are welcome!
Great video. I own the Delta 2 and a Ford and looking to get the Alternator Charger. Is it possible if you can share how you ran the cable? Can this also charge the extra battery if you have one?
Thank you, I just ran the cable along the chassis in some sprag to better protect it. Then just cable tie it up.
Same setup. I ran mine from the truck battery and along the frame and through the plastic inserts into the bed. I have a camper shell on the bed. Hope that helps.
@@EpicAfrica Thank you
Great Vid! Thanks for the review - makes this a real option - how do you manage 12v out? Or do you just use the cig lighter?
That is correct, I just used the cig lighter but there are other options too.
@@EpicAfrica I literally just ordered - what are these options you speak of? Hahahaha
Ok excellent Im sure you will be very happy with it. You could make use of the DC5521 Output and just fit an Anderson plug to it.
@@EpicAfrica Ok cool thank you sir. I will do that - its for small lights i want to run (additional to the ones the bakkie has) I go fishing and handy to have bright LED's when you trying to rig up lures etc...but thanks again for the review I got the deal with the Delta 2 Max, Alternator Charger and Free Solar panel...cant wait to get it now haha. Take care
Nice 😊 content and try to include the Africa sounds on the background
Thank you and will do!
Sincere thanks for one of the most informative videos I have viewed on a support trailer layout, many thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Great design and it fantastic to learn first hand about the individual components. Which awning company provides the lift mechanism? I haven't see it before and would like to know more.
Thanks very much! The awning and lift mechanism are all made by Metalian.
Another great video Jason.
Glad you enjoyed it
My family and I are planning a trip for September next year. In your opinion, how are the tracks around Moremi and Kwai. Did you ever get stuck towing your Bush Lapa? Would you recommend taking sand tracks? Just love watching you tow your Bush Lapa everywhere with your family.
Hi Sue, that's great, Sep is a good time of year to travel. It will be very dry still so that chances of getting stuck is very small. Its only very sandy roads that might catch you out but yes take sand tracks and let your tyres down to an acceptable pressure and you should be fine. We haven't got stuck yet but I'm sure the day will come LOL
Very nice, well done! I see you have a Smartcap Canopy, why not mounting it on the inside on 1 of the side doors? When opening it up, it will have a nice angle to it, similar to OEM. But will the signal go through the door? I know Starlink is illegal in SA, but does it work in SA, does it have good coverage?
Thanks very much! Moving to the door would mean it wouldn't work while driving, it also cannot go through the door if it was mounted on the inside. It works very well on the roof and all the new dishes from starlink are flat mounted now. I only use it when I'm outside of SA for travel but I think it wont be long before it comes to SA.
Long time guys where have you been 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
