Just had a thought. Crazy Shane vs The Punisher. Both played by the same actor, two very different characters. Shane is exactly the kind of person Frank Castle deals with. After he's done with Shane, he'll take out the Governor, and then Negan.
Shane was such a crucial role for TWD. If not for him, Rick and the gang would have been dead long ago. People say he was a psycho or something. Those people are wrong. He was simply ahead of his time. He knew what needed to be done in this new world and had a best friend dead set on getting them all killed for the sake of morality.
Shane was the only one who made Daryl look weak with just words alone. Not even Negan could do that. Also bullied the hell out of Dale. That was up Dale was said with so much smugness. Man was cool.
What if Rick was never in the hospital and him, Shane, Lori, and Carl joined the Atlanta crew together? Could Rick and Shane have coexisted in that scenario?

In a group of strangers he would be the last man standing, though. But in a group with someone that determined to lead, there was no chance.

But where Rick had looked out for everyone in his group, Shane only really wanted to look out for Lori & Carl _(and Judith by extension, though she hadn't obviously been born yet),_ and his obsession with them brought him down.

He waited for 'permission', and it got Redge killed. Shane would have already killed him, even before that, which would have been the right thing to do. Rick's 'permission' thing, showing other leaders respect (Hershel&Diana), as well as ppl in general, tho, is what gained trust that the group needed. Where Shane went wrong was going crazy, as we saw he started hitting himself in the head, then killing ppl and lying about it (Otis&Randall); that eventually turned onto Rick, but Rick, being the more balanced person, was already onto him and showed that being unhinged doesn't work.
Shane should've just taken that ride into the sunset with Andrea. They could've become a good team and made their own way in the world, instead of clashing with Rick, Dale, Herschel and all those guys still stuck in the old world.
