Heck Rick first time facing a large group was just after Shane died and that's where he learned Shane was right about it when it comes to fight.
Lori being so two faced is why I hated her as a character. She's what drove Shane insane & drove a wedge between him & Rick. Not to mention she was more of a liability than an asset, because every time she turned up it was always some kind of drama she'd create all because she didn't know what the hell she wanted from anyone.
Shane was by far the most realistic character on TWD during the first few seasons. A total badass that belonged with Madison and Strand over on Fear the walking dead (seasons 1>3)
Madison and Strand didn't do anything until later. Strand just was stubborn and selfish, and Madison did a lot of dumb things. I say Travis was the badass of that show for the things he did.

I can name at least 12 different things for her character in season 3 alone. Killing Troy was the right call. I liked Troy, but he was a loose end at that time. I agree with you about Travis being a badass, though. The pit scene put him at the top of the food chain of the entire TWD universe. Then he died, unfortunately. Madison was more of a badass in a human chess kind of way. And then when she beat you down emotionally, she took over and killed you. I agree she made mistakes in the first two seasons but adapted far quicker than Rick did. Ultimately, her lack of morality, in the post apocalypse, is why Shane would've been a far better fit to be with Madison and Strand over the group he ultimately died for.

I agree with you about Travis being a badass, though. The pit scene put him at the top of the food chain of the entire TWD universe. Then he died, unfortunately. Madison was more of a badass in a human chess kind of way. And then when she beat you down emotionally, she took over and killed you.
I agree she made mistakes in the first two seasons but adapted far quicker than Rick did.
Ultimately, her lack of morality, in the post apocalypse, is why Shane would've been a far better fit to be with Madison and Strand over the group he ultimately died for.

So Shane did kill Otis but he didn't do it out pure selfishness considering he offered to be left behind and let Otis live. But him being involved with Lori has no excuse and that was his biggest problem.

Shane wasn’t a villain. He’s exactly the type of man that is needed to survive in the immediate apocalypse. All he wanted was family loyalty and those he loved to be safe. The show eventually shows that he is right but having Rick become Shane when they reach Alexandria
