I mean I wasn't really arguing that it is "objectively" a slog, just my own personal experience was (I probably could have been clearer in my word choice).
A lot of things about the super arc structure that Oda was developing was rubbing me the wrong way: I didn't like all the henchman that ended up being pretty irrelevant/unmemorable in their personality gimmicks (Machvise, Dellinger, Gladius), or the constant cutting away that made really quick fights feel like a slog bc of how long it took to get back to them. But these are things that Oda's only gotten better about since then, making all the chaos feel structured (admittedly, there were a bunch of henchman and cutaways before, but not on the scale that Dressrosa forward has had).
But I'm glad you had a good experience, and I will totally grant you that all of the main story beats did not feel arbitrary or superfluous.

i can't speak for others but my main issues with the dressrosa arc and why i also initially stopped reading one piece weekly is due to the fact that they introduced soo many characters that at a certain point it just became frustrating seeing oda trying to juggle 5 storylines / fights at once instead of really exploring and making an enjoyable / relatable character / story
i couldn't enjoy the flow of the anime, everything feels so artificially slow and as soon as you started noticing the ammount of flashback / "filler" that were being used you just couldn't unnotice it
-> let's be clear i don't dislike flashbacks since they are vital to storytelling (law / corazon / doffy) but the rule of thump tends to be that you should make your "reminiscing / recapping" flasbacks as short as possible, short enough so that it will still "conjure" the emotion that you want you want your viewers to feel
there were just too many moments where it feels like the story was elongated just to fill in time
      - seeing luffy get punched by bellamy's bouncing attack 4 episodes in a row while i'm wondering how many times he actually got punched and how many times it was a recap
      - flashbacks to already seen flashbacks where they showed the large part of the flashback again instead of limiting it to a couple of seconds
      - the constant "recapping" by viola while also constantly cutting towards everyone AND their mother's reaction to something that's happening
      - doffy being a complete moron when it comes to "going for the jugular" -> the ammount of times that doffy was pissed out of his mind by the fact that nothing went as planned and that luffy kept foiling everything -> we're supposed to believe this guy is completely ruthless when he's allowing luffy who's completely incapitated to recover so that he can get beat by him.
we're supposed to believe that doffy took luffy's invade serious after seeing what happened with crocodile and when he actively started following luffy's battles
doffy was in his room with a dozen of his executives basically doing nothing while he knew sugar was getting attacked and the only protection sugar had was trebol, it's like what the actual fuck what's the point of having a dozen strong executives when you are terrible to the point of utter incompetence at using them effeciently which is completely unbelievable considering how he was portrayed as "joker"
the constant contradictions in people's values and the sheer incompetence of how the marines are displayed as
      - doffy killing his father and brother without mercy, being portrayed as this complete ruthless person -> luffy foiled literally everything, pissed doffy off so incredibly hard only for him to "get distracted" and go torture viola / rebecca to "lure out" a completely incapacitated luffy he could have just disposed off if he just hunted him down
      - seeing fujitora having this heartfelt moment of giving a speech of prioritise the people of dressrosa, do whatever you can to help them, they are the priority
      - > only for us to then later on see the following scene "the scene being there for sake of shock and for the sake of seeing people be in COMPLETE despair, building up doffy's ruthlessnes" the scene being the hospital scene where the personel is taking out the beds with sick people on them after the bird cage started accelerating, the personel pleading for help to the people who are passing by only to be completely ignored
it's like HELLO??? there's gotta be some protocol on "what to do as the marines when a country goes to shit" and the fact that there was an ACTIVE admiral present wo just recently declared that his values were to prioritise the people at all cost only for the marines to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to tone down the chaos and guide / reassure the people to the best of their ability is straight up poor storytelling
when a country goes to shit (people were manipulated into hurting other people) wouldn't the first thing the marines should do is make sure the hospital is supported and potentionally expanded, isn't the second thing the marines should do is to make sure that people injured and people who are in complete chaos get guided to said hospital / or any other field hospital while reassuring them to minimize panic
i swear i was gonna keep this short but since i recently completely rewatched dressrosa everything is just very fresh in my memories
and the final complaint is Doffy's powers man
is there any reason why doflamingo can use and maintain the bird cage for an incredibly extended period of time, while using and maintaining a string clone of himself and while also fighting at full power against Law, Luffy and others again for a very extended period of time
there seemed to be no effort / stamina used to maintain the bird cage and he doesn't seem to lose ANY focus / power for maintaining it all while fighting at his full power against others so why is thestring of the birdcage so incredibly indestructible, it's literally strings, you would think he ate another devil fruit that gave his string insane unbreakable durability
WHY are the strings of said birdcage strong enough that even a combined effort of an entire country which includes an admiral, Multiple high level pirates and multiple haki experts can't even stop it let alone destroy it ALL while doflamingo is barely conscious after luffy hit him like what??
the more i think about it the more i feel like there are "objectively" better ways to tell this story so that the story doesn't undermine the set "values" of it's characters
      - establishing what the navy is doing so that it's believable when there is absolute panic / despair
      - when doffy is actually losing it by how pissed he is -> GIVE HIM THE MOMENT -> make him actively hunt an incapacitated luffy -> or atleast let him have a "law gets his arm cut" moment on someone who isn't important to the future story, make us believe that he's pissed beyond belief (i'd also personally would change "the birdcage", there is no great reason why string is strong enough to contain an entire country of elite fighters aside from the fact that IT HAD TO BE THAT STRONG to create urgency and the opportunity to unite the country in the story)
      - change some story pacing issues -> don't insult your audience by constantly recapping or showing the same things, also stick to "show, don't tell"
i genuinely believe that if dressrosa did these 3 things that it would have been an incredible arc with an amazing villain if not one of the best villains
But seriously i swear i was gonna keep this short but I didn't think i'd feel this strong about how this arc went, it just feels like a "setup" arc for the future war arc more than it feels like it's own consistent arc -> as in alot can be redeemed later on potentionally

Dressrosa honestly represents One Piece's biggest strength, as well as it's weakness, which is Oda's ambition. You can tell Oda was incredibly ambitious with regards to the vision for this arc. It had the best antagonist and it had alot of great reveals. However it was clear he bit off more than he could chew (which is unfortunately a problem that is common in the post-timeskip arcs) and covered alot of characters and events that people just didn't care about.

The problem with Dressrosa (manga wise) was that it didn't adhere well to weekly releases because of how complex it was. The anime made the problem worse with the worse pacing in the entire series happening during this arc. If you binge read it its pretty good and the One Pace cut of the anime is pretty good as well. I have been reading weekly since thriller bark, and sometimes i just drop one piece till the full arc is out. Its a legitimate way to read it. However i would also say some arcs are absolutely amazing week to week. The assault on Onigashima, was very close to being peek weekly one piece, but I feel it has gotten a little rushed and chopped up, as Oda is already preping and organising for what is coming next. Which is a shame the Four emperors sagas climax being possibly not as epic as it could of been, but it does hype up the final saga Majorly.

      1. Quite a few gladiators didn't join the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, The Kelly Funk Brothers, Ascilla, Rolling Logan, Damask, Meadows, Mummy, Cactus Guy, and more I probably don't remember because there were so many.
      2. Many of the gladiators were completely useless and had no presence, some were so bad that they literally had no shown personality or fighting style, like the aforementioned Meadows and Mummy.
      3. At the time of writing this, The Straw Hat Grand Fleet itself has done absolutely nothing outside of cover stories, and a few chaperoning world nobles at the Reverie for like one chapter. Don't get me wrong, they probably will have importance in the future, and when they do, I'll reevaluate my opinion, but right now, The Straw Hat Grand Fleet seems like a completely useless addition to the story.

Like, a clone made of string was able to be cut in half by Kyros, however none of the individual pieces of string of the birdcage were able to be cut by Zoro, who just got done cutting several hundred square meters of stone apart, or a goddamn Marine admiral. Rebecca is cooler than people say. She's a strong willed survivor whose compassion and pacifistic lead her to developing a nonlethal fighting style. Her costume never bothered me as Red Sonja is an iconic character I grew up with and I loved Oda's homage to this legendary badass female warrior. The only disappointment I have regarding the character is that she was not fighting alongside her father while he was facing off against the man who killed her mother. I really wish that Diamante had brought just one or two flunkies with him so that Robin and Rebecca could have something to do if Kyros was going to face-off against Diamante alone. Maybe Diamante could have tucked a couple of folded up henchmen up his sleeves and released them just as the fight got started. Rebecca really was denied an opportunity to prove herself in the narrative and I find that to be a shame. But aside from that one blemish, I really love the character, her story & everything else -- I'm even 100% behind her shipping with Koby. I give Rebecca a B+ rating and I look forward to seeing her again in the future. (Hopefully as the Swordsman of The Princess Pirates captained by Renegade-Princess Vivi)

Yes, those arcs already exist we don't need MORE of the same it's unbearable that so many fans want every arc to be like the East Blue or Fishman island arc. One Piece is already very formulaic in its storytelling it doesn't need to be even more generic to appease the lowest common denominator of audience members.

The most impressive facet of the Dressrosa Arc for me wasn’t Doffy, but the fact that Oda was able to keep the plot so tightly knit and actually pace it well in spite of 100-plus characters and chapters. Unfortunately, it did not come across this way when serialized volumes were coming out every week, keeping readers in the same setting and impatient for the inevitable clash to happen. Shame it will be remembered as mediocre-at-best, but I don’t see how Oda could have expected an arc this long and redundant to be a success, especially with all of the hype leading up to it and mystery surrounding Doffy. Crazy how a mangaka could follow the same formula for two different tales - Alabasta - that virtually parallel each other and they could be received so differently.

I read the manga and this was the same for me. It took me over a month to get through Fishman Island and Punk Hazard, and I planned to just charge in and read Dressrosa over the course of a week. I was basically forcing myself to read for a little bit, and then I ended up getting super invested and read the entire arc in three days. Its much more enjoyable when you can read it in one sitting

I don’t know, I really liked that about this arc. Sure, the chapter they’re ALL introduced, I’m thinking “alright, most of them will be fodder, but Oda is introducing them surely because at least SOME will be important”. Turns out I was right, and I liked how it played out. Obviously the creation of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet is extremely important, and I loved it.

Dressrosa was actually the first arc I read weekly, and it was...an interesting experience. I do agree that it's definitely a better story when binged than when read weekly, but it's honestly in my top 5 arcs in the series. At the very bottom of my top 5, but 5th place out of 31 (I think?) isn't bad.

    • @brainydiode
      @brainydiode 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Tenyasha That's actually not a question I'd considered too much. Obviously I'm coming at this as someone who has only had the weekly reading experience with Dressrosa, Zou, Whole Cake Island, Reverie, and Wano. Whole Cake Island I also enjoyed more when I reread it after it was completed, but honestly, with Reverie, the Wano intermissions, and now Wano act 3, I've been really enjoying having the time to let the new big information stew for a while and watching the community theorize and speculate each week as we wait for the chapters. So I guess from my perspective, I prefer binging the slower-paced sections but I prefer reading the big info-dumps week-by-week. I guess that might just be a case of me subconsciously adjusting the pacing to fit my own taste.

They say they like one piece for world building then when oda literally builds the entire world for the story going forward by having all the major factors involved now they complain if we didn't get fishman and punk hazard instead went straight to Yonkou then they would have said ho there is continuing Power scaling is not good how can luffy fight a Yonkou so easily.....and they complain too many characters and too many story lines then say they watch one piece because it has great world building,,,, what horseshit is that Dressarosa set up so many plotlines and expanded so much of the world..... people say oda shouldn't have done this or done that like they could write a story

Leading up to this video I've seen a ton of comments saying this arc is one of their favorite arcs in the series. In the defense Of Dressrosa.
I started watching one piece about a year ago. I remember being told it was so long and filled with filler, so I was a little nervous when I made it to Dressrosa but I loved it. It’s actually my 3rd favorite arc right now right behind Enies lobby as number one and Water 7 in second place.(side note I just started Wano). Doflamingo is actually my favorite villain and Rebecca was one of favorite characters of the Dressrosa arc, i didn’t think she was annoying at all but I do have to admit I was getting a little tired of her flashbacks after a while. I also enjoyed the Colosseum part especially meeting Sai. I also loved Baby 5 and Sai love story. Then getting to see Sabo and get his backstory and being in the revolutionary army. Then Law backstory hit me like a brick. From Law’s white lead disease to meeting corazon and getting his and Doffys backstory, getting to meet more celestial dragons, to corazon sacrifice for Law. And personally I loved the aesthetic of Dressrosa. And God fucking Doffy! Getting to have a actual real psycho, manipulator villain.
Thank you for who ever read this all the way through, I’m very passionate about this arc.❤
