Rebuilt a husky 288 last year with aftermarket jug, piston, bearings, still running like a champ, the gaskets were kinda funky, but a little TLC with a razor knife and they were good to go.
Like one poster said if you're gonna go oem you might as well can the thing and buy a new saw, you can do three after market rebuilds for the price of one oem.

I have rebuilt quite a few stihl's and I can tell you that if you use NWP Brand Pistons and Cylinders you will actually be getting as good or better quality rebuilds than any other brand and they run about $100.-$130. per kit. One thing that I like about NWP is they coat most of their pistons with a teflon coating which really helps allow proper break in without metal to metal friction and also the entire outside of the cylinder is coated with teflon which is a superb way of helping reduce buildup of baked on sawdust and oil. Go with NWP and try it out for yourself!

Jeremy I finished the install on the new cylinder and piston. I purchased a NWP big bore from baily's on line Every thing was good except the gasket that came with the cylinder kit. It cost me $129 for the kit plus tax. It actually runs better than the original saw. It has a lot more power and little or no stalling under a heavy load. I use this saw for milling wood so it gets put to the test. Thanks for all the helpful videos.

I have a Stihl Farm Boss MS290 20" $399. new. I've found more Aftermarket engines for this than any other saw, that says something. Mine was was less than one year old when it lost compression and stopped running. I had a bottle of generic 2 cycle oil in the case when I took it to the dealer and because of that they said they wouldn't cover it under warranty. They wanted $379. to replace the Cylinder, Piston and Rings. Got Ebay Aftermarket within one week for $39. and have used it for three years and over 30 Cord. I definitely got $39. dollars worth of cutting out of it.

      Awesome to hear!
And it also makes sense for 39 bucks...
For $379 to repair it, i would tell them to stuff their saw, and would spend the $20 more to buy brand new!

I broke piston on my 10 year old ms290 (my fault) 4 years ago, I installed amazon $40.00 cylinder/piston kit and still working great to this day and I cut lots of oak fire wood, I don't see how stihl $350 kit could have served any better

If you are rebuilding the engine and you actually know what you are doing and have some tools at your disposal you can fine tune the aftermarket stuff....I look at it like I’m saving some money because I’m the final inspection station and I’m going to need to ease my edges and possibly straighten something out... they are less finished than the OEM... although I’ve definitely needed to tighten up some OEM topends as well... the quality of the aftermarket has jumped up significantly in the past couple years for certain and some aftermarket actually exceeds the OEM option! It’s a beautiful time to be into saw’s and saw repair! And because of some competition we are seeing those OEM prices come down out of the stratosphere!!! Why weren’t they more reasonable for the past 10 years??? It’s definitely a great day to be alive and working on powersaw’s!!!

I realize you posted this 3 years ago but I'm gonna agree with you. I've worked on my own stuff all my life and I'm talking since 1996 when I was racing go-carts and I'm 33 now. I'm sure you've been in it much longer but I'll use aftermarket part on a lot of things as long as the parts aren't so cheap that it's garbage and wont last. It's happened, I've bought a brand and it turn out to be junk and I just stay away from that brand. I have 18 old chain saws. Some from the 70s and 80s and a few from the early 90s ( My dad was a logger ). Most are Jonsered, a few Stihl and a few Husqvarna. They haven't run in years and some haven't ran in 20 years. I've been able to fix most of them on my own. I was glad to have stumbled upon your video earlier tonight on pressure testing the crank case. So I've been watching more of your videos. I have air getting sucking in from somewhere so I had to search for reasons unknown to me. This is the first time I've needed help fixing a saw and I'm very thankful for ya.

I am a gold certified Stihl masterwrench technician and I have had varied results with aftermarket cylinders. Some I've put on are still going strong after two years, and some lasted about 60 seconds or less before exploding. I've never had that happen with OEM parts.

Meteor kits are as close to oem as you can get I put a hyway kit on my 036 only lasted a few months before a catastrophic failure rebuilding it with a meteor piston and cylinder. As far as gaskets and seals go always use OEM aftermarket is a gamble enough and they tend to cause air leaks

I put a Zama Carb on my Husky 359. After fixing many other issues with the saw, found that the carb wouldn't adjust. Ran extremely rich ( even with both screws all in). Ordered another. Worked perfect. Didn't even need adjusting. I guess first one was made on Chinese friday.
Also would like to know the origin country of manufacture of these cylinder kits. Some retailers will tell you, others dont.

    Here's another angle.
I just got a Stihl 038 AV Magnum saw back from the Stihl dealer's repair shop. They say it's not repairable because it has cylinder & piston damage and parts are not available.
"Aftermarket" looks like it may be my only choice if I want to use that saw.

  • @grifonks

Thanks for the vid, I don't know how I missed it last year. I am picky about AM parts especially about the rings, on the Tecomecs, Meteor/Caber's and Highway Kits I'll use the rings, but everything else get's Caber's- the better rings give more compression.... I am wary of the Chinese circlips too.

Found the aftermarket pots and pistons on Ebay and Ive given a few old saws a new lease of life.
    2xms200t's and my first (1999) 020t
Currently rebuilding an old 026. £30 for pot and piston kits and £12 for a carb (the rebuild kit was £8 so its a no brainer) Just ordered 026 bearings which I'm slightly concerned about but in truth the saw has been sitting in a box for 5 years in bits so nothing ventured nothing gained I think.
Just wish they did ms200t carburetors cos they always fail and are notoriously hard to rebuild (C1Q S32)

Been a power equipment tech for 35 yrs. Looks like the general consensus here is that aftermarket stuff is OK. I agree and here's why. I've got news for the few that disagree in that one of the "major player" brands purchased ZAMA corp a few yrs ago and thus why you'll find ZAMA carbs on virtually every model sold. ZAMA is in China. Several models of their equipment are manufactured and assembled there as well and state such on the serial number sticker, which also by the way are more obscurely placed rather than in plain sight. Also they are not manufacturing their pistons, bearings, etc in-house but are having them manufactured in China. There are exceptions but for the most part those 50.00 - 129.00 aftermarket kits are just as good as the 300.00 ones because they come from the same place. Like it was mentioned there is overcast (one of the reasons they're cheaper) so a little clean up (polishing is recommended) and use LOT's of assembly oil. Installed correctly these CHEAP kits will provide years of good service.

    • @wizlivesagain1
      @wizlivesagain1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm not going to elaborate any further because I'm in the industry as a tech. I know what I know. I never mentioned any manufacturer by name. "Some", not all but including pro models machined parts were indeed manufactured in China and due to tolerance issues failed prematurely and they have gotten away from doing that as much and just recently. It's all about saving a buck.

MS = Most Sh***y. I love my Stihls but the new stuff is junk. Old stuff = West Germany...yeah baby!!! Even the Husqy dealer says gotta buy a pro model to get something decent...wont even deal with the 1xx series. 435's and better i think he said.. Zama may be a Japanese company but imho an American flag made in China by China is still a Chinese flag. And I will use Chinese parts myself because what the hell makes a Husqy cylinder worth 55bucks and a Stihl worth $300 At that price Id expect it to say "Polaris" on it.. if you've ever bought Polaris parts you'll get it!!

Amsoil engine builders lube soaks into the cylinder lining and piston. Lube then and put them in a ziplock after quick polish and put them on the shelf! They're ready for years of service! Hutzl Chinese parts are good. There's casting flash and imperfections in the transfers and ports of lots of husky and Stihl saws that are brand new...

Rebuilt an older husky 288 I found in the trash(no joke) with a cheap ebay p/c and ran the piss outta it last year for my firewood buisness. No issues. Still be using it, but the 288 was a tad overkill for what I was doin. 357xp is now my go to saw. Only thing bad I have to say about the ebay stuff, and you mentioned it here, QC kinda sucks. Definatly watch for casting marks were the molds didn't sit right. And check the ports. Continued.......

I think after market is the better choice in this case as long as you mic it b4 installing it and look for defects you will have a good chance its not a bad part. Oem doesn't stand for quality like it used to also people that don't work on this kind of equipment every day just don't see the same junk parts all the time that oem and after market both seem to be sending more often nowadays.

Some good, some not so much. Got a kit from Amazon for my MS180C that contained carb and filter, fuel line and filter, oil pump, oil line and filter. It began leaking oil and really made a mess when stored. I fooled with that thing for about a day and a half trying to find the leak. Finally got so po'd, tore it down, pulled the fly wheel and the oil tank thinking it had a hole in it. Nope, POS oil line. It didn't have enough flange on it to hold securely in the oil tank. Plus, it seemed like it had too much plastic and not enough rubber. Got one from Stihl and problem went away. Big difference in material. What a PITA.
But the good news is everything else seems fine. The air filter that came in the bundle fits and seals better than the original.

Never had an Asian part go bad (since the late '90s). I have had many OEM parts come back wrong. Stihl in particular changes parts around so fast you can't keep up. The MS880 exhaust fit to the cylinder is a good example.
Funny thing happened when I ordered a knock off MS192 engine. It showed up in a Stihl bag. I compared them with calipers. They were dead equal. I paid $125 on eBay for a complete assembled OEM engine, boot, impulse, plug and Tiny tube of Dirko. Hilarious if you do any of this stuff for very long.

if your running stock power for home/occasional use the aftermarket cylinder will probably work... if you are falling timber or using the saw 6+hrs per day and are going to do any modifications to it (porting, milling, transfer port work, decking, changing the timing). then the OEM cylinder is the way to go. the aftermarket ones don't hold up. just my 2 cents and what I've seen.

I guess I have used just about every type of two cycle oil in existence in the past 40 odd years. I think I still have several cans of stamina that I used in my Poulan saws for years. the problem, today, is the sorry gas we are forced to use thanks to the Clinton's. I use stihl's ultra oil because I have a good supply for it and it is synthetic. I also know it is made by a good manufacturer- Castrol. I like Penns oil better but I do not have a good source for it. my friend from Wisconsin uses Citgo two cycle oil but I do not have a supplier for it, either. I have used a lot of husqvarna LS oil but it is only partially synthetic. I do not run my stihl or husqvarna equipment with other than a 50:1 mix. I do break in new engines at a little bit richer mix but not over 2 cupful of extra Ultra oil in the tank but only for the first tank. the second tank gets only one cap full extra. after that they get my standard 50:1 mix of premium, non ethanol mix. the key to the life of any chainsaw is not to work it beyond its capabilities. my ms 170 only works at a one tank a daw clip ,but I will work my bigger saws more. I generally get tired before they do.

i'm pretty happy with using cylinder and piston kits on my saw. just finished rebuilding my ms 361 two days ago, it has great compression and power. it's a NWP big bore kit from baileys. the first kit i bought from them lasted about two, maybe three years and i do a fair amount of cutting and ripping with it. this second kit should last me way longer though! i have two other saws now, a 441 and an 880! if you can get an old saw to run for half or less than what a new saw cost, it's worth doing!

I had to replace the engine head on a FS55 trimmer. I got a after market kit. They did not send the clips to hold the pin for the head. So after going to several small engine repair shops. And nobody has them but not to worry they can order them. Also no one has the ring compress tool. To put the piston back into the head. So it goes to a shop next week.
. I am thinking , OH Great ! since I just got one. This may be a bad omen, No locking clips, No tool to compress the rings. And I have to let someone else work on it.

Maybe you should just not try and play mechanic and skip straight to the part where you take your equipment to an experienced and trained professional. Reading your comment made my brain hurt! It was like ... I think I should fire my tennis coach while eating a Snickers because the sky is blue.

Also, jack- wagon (refuses to associate you and and 442 ... what did you read about them in some magazine?). Anyway in or before 2014 your thinking would have been more in line. With production advancements and the hiring of really experienced manufacturing engineer's the "clone's" are getting better by the day. And that a great thing for a guy that cuts wood.No loggers would ever dream of a non OEM jug&piston .... I mean 32:1 of 40:1 max % of an excellent synthetic oil and a mechanic with the ability to put a good tune on the saw if not auto-tuned and equipment still fails.... for someone not running 8 hours the non OEM is a viable option these days.in my humble opinion and the hundred of hours I have on my 350 and various other builds. Amsoil builders lube and 40:1 and Rock and Roll feller''s!!!! Get'er Done! ✌️😎

what is the port below the spark plug called and its purpose? I am trying to figure out how the air fuel mixture is released.

    • @THEMOWERMEDIC1
      @THEMOWERMEDIC1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The piston serves as a valve in this case. When the plug fires and the piston is on it way down it starts to compress the fuel charge inside the crankcase. When the
Piston starts to uncover the transfer ports and the fuel mix is forced on top of the piston, as the piston makes its way up and closes off the transfer port. The piston starts compressing the fuel mix for the next power stroke.

I've used dozens of aftermarket pistons and cylinders for years on all my Stihl chainsaws with ZERO issues, and all my saws are HEAVILY used!!!!! And like you said, OEM Stihl engine parts have NO warranty and aftermarket does, and at less than 1/4 the cost over OEM!!!! To me, it's a no-brainer!!! Going with aftermarket has saved me literally $1000's over the years!!!! And BTW, I NEVER use Stihl 2 stroke oil, either regular or their synthetic, it's junk!!!!!! I only use Redline 2 Stroke Racing or Klotz Supertechniplate oil, and always mixed 40:1!! Maybe that's part of the reason I get way longer use (even running aftermarket) out of my saws between rebuilds than the guys dead set on using only Stihl oil??

I have to agree, STIHL oil is Junk.
I disagree with the 40:1 ratio mix. I run 80:1 or 100:1 Amsoil Saber and have for years in all my Equipment.
Long story short my wife helped consolidate my gas collection and I unknowingly ended up with mineral spirits in my 2 cycle gas can. Well that didn’t end well. It causes the crank seals to fail in my MS310 modded chainsaw, my pb210e blower my MS461 and a 55 Husky. The MS310 is 18 years old and you could still read the part number on the dome top piston that was in the saw. The blower was a 1978 echo first failure ever. The MS461 was a year old still under warranty the Husky is 17 years old. Guess which piston was in the worst shape because of the manufactures extra warranty clause? The MS461 because I had to run 50:1 STIHL junk oil for the first 25 hours for the warranty to be active.

I've used the aftermarket husq 55 cylinder piston with aftermarket carbs for my own personal use. They hold up ok. Tries an Everest brand aftermarket 455 piston cylinder kit and it was crap. The holes for the screws were not drilled deep enough and the base of the cylinder busted when I torqued it. The corner broke right off. I've also used the complete aftermarket long block for a Stihl Ms 290. It was supposed to be a big bore upgrade, but it had no power. That model saw was supposed to compete with a Husqvarna 55 or 455. Not even close. The saw even from Stihl without any aftermarket parts was junk. So, I have had limited success with the aftermarket stuff. When it let's go, I just buy another. That way I have no come backs, because it's my own stuff.

If you're a professional logger, obviously you have the money for OEM, and buy from the Dealer, and want someone to hold responsible if your saw burns up.....I've had GOOD luck with aftermarket...although the piston rings they supplied Sucked.....cheap cast iron, and DIDN'T even fit the piston! So had to order a second set of Steel rings from Greece.(only $15 more).....after that, the saw ran Great! Odd how 2 Wanus's are talking to each other like they "agree" that aftermarket can't make the power that stihl OEM makes. Yeah.... Bullshit. Quit hugging stihl's nuts. I like stihl parts. But not any better than I do meteor. The kit I have on my ms361 makes far more power than a stock 361. Not ported. Just a little love. The last 361 piston I got I took back. It was horrid looking. Worse than any cheaper chinesium I've ever seen. If you think stihl doesn't have QC issues, man are you wrong! Plus, Mahle no longer makes the P&C. How much force does it take to close them? What did they plate the cylinder with? The answer to all are not good enough. The only Aftermarket cylinder that are any good time after time are the ones made by Meteor Pistons. They have been making cylinders and pistons for more than 40 years. How long has the cheap knockoff been around? Tell me you really believe a cheap knockoff going to perform like one that has the right specification that will give good performance. Cheap is cheap

After 60 hours hard use the oiler stopped working and upon tearing the saw down i noted 3mm vertical crankshaft play and zero lateral play. Something has caused the main bearings to eat into the transfer port bearing ridge on the Chinese barrel which has lead to this problem. I am going back to the old oem 210 barrel and fitting a meteor piston/rings. I would be interested to hear of anyone else who has had a similar problem with aftermarket parts.
