Kogan Vertical Air Conditioner Unit Review Part 2

  • PLEASE NOTE:- I just made a discovery that I should have made note of in this video. There is also a drain plug at the front of the unit. It's located directly below the K in Kogan on the bottom of the aircon unti. Handy for those people that want to a run a hose inside, or just empty any excess water/condensation that can build up in the unit if you leave the plugs in.
    The timer unit can also be used to turn off or turn on the unit after a specific period of time.
    These two new discoveries have made teh unit even more versatile and user freiendly in my eyes.
    This is a 2nd part to my original review as I have had quite a number of questions asked about the unit.
    I was quite pleasently suprised at how easy it was to install. The frame easily sits into s standard metal window frame, and then it's a matter of adjusting the sliding frame to fit the size of your window frame, tightening a few screws, and then inserting the air con unit into tt's frame.
    At first I was worried that the weight of the air con unit would make it difficult to install, however the frame sits very tightly in the window and does not flex or move when the air con unit is sitting in the frame.
    I've installed our unit in our backroom where I use my computer, and the 1.75KM does a great job of making the room very cool, even when the late afternoon summer sun is hitting the window here on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
    The unit is very easy to operate either from the touch screen, or from the remote.
    It so far has also done an excellent job of keeping the weather out when installed in the window, and it has now been through several major storms where the rain and wind were pounding against the back of this unit.
    All in all, I think the unit is well worth the money, and it can easily be moved from room to room, or taken to your new home if ever required, which negates the need of getting a glazier involved to fit your air con unit in or out of the window.
    YES I would recomend this product.

    Thank you for reviewing the air conditioner! I've been looking into Kogan's and Teco's vertical models, and it helps so much to see how they are set up, and what the situation is with water and weather proofing.

      We have 3 now as we found these so easy to instal and it replaced some of our older window box aircon units. We liked it so much that we have 2 of this size now, and the bigger one that Kogan offers. My wife runs the big one constantly, and no issues at all.

    Thanks for the reviews. I bought this aircon and its good enough for a small room. Those extra brackets are the protection plates for the window. You just undo the screw enough to slot it in between. Then it sort of works as a clamp once you screw it in. The instruction are very vague. Also the thing you tried to fasten on to the top is for the sliding window track. Its a locking mechanism so if you only have a normal flyscreen you can lock the window in place.

    • @AdamBoltGoldCoast
      @AdamBoltGoldCoast  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah thats great info. I also found out there is a drain plug at the front of the unit. Its inline with the K in Kogan at the bottom of the air con unit. So if you didnt run a drain hose you can easily remove this plug to remove any exxcess water/condensation that has built up in the unit.

    • @Shuzwah
      @Shuzwah ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@t3nchy the lock only works on one of my windows. It more like a sliding door size track. The lock clamp fit inside the track gap, then you turn the dial to lock it in place. The other windows i just cut a timber stick to size to fit in the track. To be honest the stick is easier for people to take out and open the window.

    • @AdamBoltGoldCoast
      @AdamBoltGoldCoast  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Seeing our son has a portable one in his room and we have both the smaller unit and the bigger unit, the smaller unit is the quieter of them all. The larger unit and portable unit are slightly noisier, but none are excessively noisy. From a couple of metres away they all sound as noisy as any larger permanently installed aircon units. They have a slight hum and a Woosh sound from the air. They certainly don’t rattle in the frame like our older window installed we use to have.
      The larger of the Kogan window installed units we have I can confirm is better for a larger bedroom with ensuite and walk-in robe, and does a very good job at cooling the room down with the door to the room closed, and if my wife likes it, then it must be good as she hates the heat.
      Even this smaller unit in our back room where I work at the computer, I find if I run it at below 24 deg that room gets too cold for me.

      If you don't mind how large would you say the bedroom is with the ensuite in square meters? And also I was reading the specs on the Kogan website that states the larger unit Noise Level is 40-51dB(A) and the smaller one at 65dB(A). I wonder if that's a misprint? I'm a very light sleeper so the less noise the better. Thank you again.

    • @AdamBoltGoldCoast
      @AdamBoltGoldCoast  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could with a bit of force. But to be honest it has great weather sealing at the back. If you forced it you’d most likely break the weather seals.
      This unit has been up for a while now and I’ve never had any rain come into the room, even during the time we had really bad rains and it flooded all the way down the east coast.
      The back of the unit works like any other aircon compressor unit that’s exposed to the elements, so all the bits inside are well sealed from any moisture etc getting inside the unit.

      Thats a hard question to answer. If its like our old split systems, then its way quieter, and if I compare it to the the new Fujitsu split system we put in then its only slightly noiser, and thats only becuase the compressor from this window mounted unit is in the window and not outside like a split system so you hear a slightly humming rumble when the compressor kicks in. The fan noise from this unit though is very quiet.

      I ended up up getting this unit just before the Black Friday sales (wanted to beat the Xmas rush) and would you believe I missed out on $170 savings. Anyway I’ve debated getting this for a few years and glad now I have it I use it most nights. I’m in Western Sydney. I run it mostly on dehumidifier cycle because folks reckon that’s more economical, but I do find it less adequate than the normal cold cycle for hot nights.
      I’ve set it up without the plug because that was the instructions. To put a hose I would have to cut a hole in the fly screen. And to put the plug back in I also would have to put a hole in the screen.
      I’m just wondering why the instructions don’t explain to leave the plug in if you want.
      Are you saying that if I put the plug in then the unit will work better? Plus more efficiently?

    • @AdamBoltGoldCoast

      I've got it plugged in at the moment and the cord runs behind a desk, so without being 100% accurate its somewhere between 1.5m to 1.8m in length.
      We've also just ordered the larger 2.6kw version from Kogan as they had the free shipping for the Boxing Day sales. This unit should arrive later this week, so I'm keen to see the difference between this one at 2.6kw, compared to the 1.75kw unit in my room.

    The installation guide says not to have a screen down behind the aircon to avoid hindering airflow for the intake. I would rather have the screen down to better hide the unit from outside but not at the expense of performance or worse burning out the motor. Have you had any issues with the screen down or anything?

    • @AdamBoltGoldCoast
      @AdamBoltGoldCoast  ปีที่แล้ว

      None at all. We just purchased a 3rd unit from Kogan which is a bigger 2.3kw unit.
      Our fly screen isn’t really any different to our larger air con units with a compressor outside which have a mesh across the back of the compressor units to stop leaves and bugs getting into the unit.
      My daughter closed her sliding window behind the window unit once and then it did shut off due to over heating, but that’s because the unit got no airflow then.

    hey there Adam i live in a rental house and they are very picky on damage to the walls is there any way to set this up without having to screw into the walls to hold it up

    • @AdamBoltGoldCoast
      @AdamBoltGoldCoast  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The screws are there just to hold the air con frame in place to stop it from sliding/moving around in the window tracks that it sits in. The screws don't actually go all the way through into the window frame itself, which makes it super easy to instal or remove when you need to.
      There really shouldn't be any damge to the existing window frame that you instal the air con unit into. The screws may mark the window frame if you tighten them too hard, so if thats the case you could buy some high density rubber foam to put between the screw and the window frame which should stop it from scracthing.

      @@AdamBoltGoldCoast The two seemingly redundant L-shaped plates also perplexed me. I found the OEM of this Kogan unit, "新科", who had an installation video online for Chinese customers. They're apparently to be inserted immediately inside, touching the window grooves, to protect them from marks (both top and bottom), and to strengthen the installation by spreading the load instead of single points of contact. The 3 screw holes are useless however.
      Since the bottom groove is quite high from my window sill, I used some wood to decrease that distance, which would be safer if the bottom plate ever slides down. Probably they designed it based on some common windows in their region of China, and failed to consider. Kogan's lack of instructions doesn't help.

      Yes, you can leave the plug in the drain hole, and the air con will let you know when it’s full and needs to be emptied (The air con is easy to take in and out of the bracket it sits in).
      Alternatively if your window seal has drain holes that allow the water to drain out on the outside of your building you could cut a short drain hose that sits just in behind the air con unit and the excess water would drain out through the window seal to the outside.
      Or you could run the hose inside your house and just feed it into a bucket or pan that you could sit under the air con unit inside.
