He says that but his new show was just a conglomerate of the most "morally obvious", woke, left wing views that he could think of. The hypocrisy is laughable.

@@adambradley4293 but i feel like the whole show was him taking the piss out of that … it’s a weird cycle to get in to, because it sort of acts as criticism of what you are, but it also acts as a safety net for any criticism because you can just say you were already criticising it… but i still think it’s done well, because it hasn’t been done before - but it doesn’t need to be done again (as is the case with all art) which is one of the reasons why Youngblud’s poor knock off of the 1975’s show is so poor

@@adambradley4293 yeah, the dude is a massive hypocrite. But he also thinks he's in a revolutionary band when all the songs I hear from them are either just naff, basic pop records or poor knock-offs of stuff that has been done years before (paul simon, vampire weekend etc).
And I have no issue with young, idealistic pop stars with naive, over-simplistic, trendy view points, it's nothing new and their hearts are generally in the right place. I do have an issue with Healy trying to play both sides though.

Yungblud is a product. His music, thoughts, presentation are all nothing more than what the industry thinks we need and sadly people lap it up. He’s a construct. Matt is saying what’s in his own head, even if it creates friction, you can hear the difference and it makes you want to listen. We’ve made it so easy for people by protecting them from conflict that friction has become an endangered beast, but we need so much more friction, to generate honest conversation, which leads to growth and understanding. I love that managers are thanking each other, just as much as I love Matt creating friction, it’s the balance of the two that we need, to help us form our own thoughts and opinions through the different experiences. We don’t stretch our brains enough anymore and don’t know how to respond to differing opinions without hate, which is dumbing us down.

Unfortunately, the byproduct of the morons is that the smart people can't make such arguments in good faith without it being tainted by morons on twitter. No one knew if there'd be a riot -- it was just "dress appropriately for dodging flying stadium seats." Matt Healy has a RAZOR SHARP bullshit detector, whatever his faults might be, and performative sensitivity and empathy are worthy targets. And geez, that Yungblud imitation is hilarious. I will say this about matty. i've been a fan of 1975 for a long time. Seen two of their live shows. I may not always agree with his takes, in fairness he's an artist. However, something i've grown to admire is his willingness to use his platform to speak on things he's passionate about. Other people may say, shut up and play the music, but he challenges things with his music and his little pep talks on stage. I kinda dig it. Again, not all the time, but at least it shows he's thinking about things and his place in the world and his impact on others as an artist. I think even deeper what's more admirable, is he's risking his career to say what he feels in his heart and he seems to be trying to be as authentic as he can be. And that's what's cool. He's just being himself. Thanks for covering this. Music drama is cool beans.

Both of them are completely guilty of each other's accusations. Out of the two I'm more in Yungblud's camp, mainly because he reminds me a bit of Billy Idol and I do think he's a decent human being. Have seen him live and he's nuts, he really gives it his all. Really want to hate Matty Healy for what he said, but I think he's also totally right. Dom (yungblud) champions things that are 'morally obvious' and the impression did make me laugh. Perhaps it's all staged to give each other publicity as they tour?
Anyway, I do feel a bit old to be having an opinion in this, it's hardly Robert Smith Vs Morrissey.

I think this jab that Yungblud is championing "obvious" stuff is because of his age; but who doesn't think they know everything at that age? I've seen Yungblud performs too, and I gotta say he's impressive. It's just him, a guitar and a drum. No smoke, not props. It's just him. Like, he really puts himself out there. There's something admirable about that. Who knows? he may be a flash-in-the pan, but he may really have something. He's developing his voice. I don't think it's fair for Matty Healy to mock YB's accent; it seems classist and personal, idk, you English got your own set of stuff around that jazz. But something about Matty Healy feels a bit entitled and his jab at YB kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Graceful thing may have been to just to ignore stuff. But times are changing, so who knows? I mean, feels like a week- a$$ feud in the end.

    • @nikoletta7678
      @nikoletta7678 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@ellenhenderson6865 I doubt it's down to his age because he has a big team around him. I think this is where I agree with Matty. Dom defends what Matty refers to as "morally obvious" as those are issues that are definitely safer to champion- that doesn't mean that the things Dom defends are not important issues- they are jus safer issues, and I guess Matty doesn't find that very punk or rock n' roll. He's making a much bigger point at how contrived and sterile things are in the Music World right now. I interpret the dig at the broad Yorkshire accent as Matty accusing Dom of overdoing, and even cashing in on, his accent and imitating mega stars such as Liam Gallagher, Alex Turner and I'm sure there are others. Dom has borrowed from everyone going, but that's why I like him. He takes elements of so many big artists and groups that people love and melds it into some really good tracks and shows. The Cure, Oasis, Billy Idol, Nirvana , ACDC, The Artic Monkeys, Eminem and even the 1975 themselves, are all major influences on the music he puts out, he's like a walking, talking Juke Box. Matty seems frustrated by the music world and is making it known and I admire this, he seems more original (even if I do find his recent performances a bit pompous and lack luster) he's stirring the pot bigtime. On the Oasis thing, he's hit the nail on the head. Time will tell if he is using this as a guise to mask some of the more worrying and sinister views that people on social media have accused him of.

First time I thought it was just because he was drunk, second time I realized it didn’t matter how pissed or sober he was - he just sang as badly as Ian Brown. The only reason one of the Oasis gigs was the best I’ve ever been to is because Cornershop opened and changed my fucking perspective of music (Noel joined them on stage, Liam didn’t). I hope Oasis never reform, the world is better without them.

They represent everything wrong with the music industry today. Both from super rich families and have used that money to get ahead in the industry, honestly couldn’t name the last breakthrough act who isn’t where they are without money and nepotism.
Yungblud plays on a facade of being working class, but imagine being a white dude whose parents paid for you to go to a £35,000 a year private secondary school, a £20,000 a year private performing arts college and then calling someone else out as privileged white dude 😬

However, I can say that Matty at least doesn’t pretend to have come from absolutely nothing. And nepotism is an unusual word to use when his parents were in television not the music industry…

    • @woodandnailsuk

Obviously they’re not A List but they’re easily millionaires with connections. Of course his parents are at least both too famous to deny his background so may as well embrace it. That’s one positive on Yungblud, I guess, at least he doesn’t pretend.
The fact they played stadium shows with Rolling Stones and Muse before their debut album was even released shows they were backed long before their current huge success. Even if there was work put in on the circuit early on in previous bands the very fact there was literally no jeopardy to failure gives absolute freedom to pursue art without the need to be concerned about things that everyone else does like a job, money, food, shelter etc.

Uncertain it is accurate that there have not been rock star feuds for 20 yrs or so (global rock star peace in our times). Seem to be many vigorously contested ongoing rock feuds that have spanned many a year, notably Roger Waters versus the rest of the Pink Floyd from the '80s to the present day. Trouble for YungBlud's pop-punk is that is what the Buzzcocks did years ago. Trouble for The 1975 is that British pop-rock can be rather parochial and hard to sustain well for more than a year or two internationally at the top.

    Really great video!!
Matty Healy is the latest in a long timeline of Mancunian musicians (Peter Hook, Mark E. Smith, Morrissey, Ian Brown & the Gallaghers ) who aren’t afraid to voice their disdain of their contemporaries at all & rightly so.
My issue with modern music is that musicians are instead feuding with politicians and not each other, now I fully agree that ALL politicians are deserving of mockery, but as Matty made clear in his parody of Yungblud it’s become establishment opinions amongst musicians and doesn’t really take guts to speak out against what are already established moral issues.
For me a lot of the musicians who try and act really political are actually insufferably smug themselves and worth putting down a peg or two and I’m all for it and I think Matty making that stand is far more courageous as that genuinely does take guts as it goes against the new status quo.
(I write this not as a 1975 fan, although I liked the last album… and I’ve been critical of Matty being inconsistent in the past but for now good job to him)
Ps: I also want to give a shout out to Black Midi who’ve also made a name for themselves slagging off of other musicians but they’re nowhere near as big so won’t get the same kind of attention
