Honestly I think The 1975 is one of the best bands of the last decade. They've got some great pop songs, but also loads of more experimental stuff too, and they're fantastic live. A lot of people I know have them written off as a band just for teenage girls but I think they're genuinely fantastic artists.

Yes! I second this. I really hope he tries them on for size. The INXS comparisons are apt....in many ways. But so is Talking Heads. Or 10 other bands I could list. The point is....Matty IS a genius songwriter and a really interesting human. And his band is one of the best there's ever been. They have LOTS of songs and albums and eras and vibes and moods etc etc. Start somewhere....and explore. Have fun. It might take you 6 months to get to that ONE song I'm convinced will change your life....but don't worry, it's waiting. They're that kind of band. Watching this....honestly was so fun. Just watching a very intelligent cool human who _gets_ music....realizing there's a band out there that he's totally missed the boat on. GET ON THE BOAT! We got room! :)

Dude watching Matty’s life cycle through being a young rockstar with a heroin addiction to one of the most mature and gifted lyricists of our generation if not all time is worth listening to every album of theirs 10 times through. At the end of the Birthday Party he talks about his friends (the band) being the only thing that can keep him clean, and now in Part of the Band (^), the last line and the only one the whole chorus comes in for is a proclamation of how long he has been clean for. Truly tearjerking stuff from my now and always favorite band.

Adore this band. My ex-girlfriend got me into them and was just amazed by how great their hooks were and how much starpower their frontman had. I think the Love Me video hooked me. Very tongue-in-cheek but undeniably the guy is a star. Think it’s sexist bullshit people write them off cause teenage girls like them. Who cares? Loads of the greatest bands of all time were beloved by teenage girls, why do people assume the artistic tastes of teenage girls is inherently bad? Fact of the matter is the 1975 takes more creative risks than most other artists existing in the mainstream. I wouldn’t say it always pays off, but that fearlessness is what really makes all the difference.
I think my favourite thing is that they manage to successfully delve into a wide range of genres whilst maintaining their 'own' sound (to an extent) I think a lot of people who write them off would be pleasantly surprised by the quality of their "lesser known" (I know they're a huge band, but relatively) songs
I've thought about the point you made so many times. It really is such a shame that people do that. Also, my ex-girlfriend got me into The 1975 as well, and I regrettably wrote them off as shitty back then too. It wasn't until I truly sat and LISTENED that they instantly became one of my favorite bands.
An ex girlfriend of mine also got me into this band. I became quickly OBSESSED with them and they've been my favorite band ever since. They truly are a unique group of musicians and i can always expect a different experience with each album that comes out.

Frail state of mind is one of my favourite songs from this band. It's very chilled, has a British feel to it and I like the lyrical content. Somebody else will also always be a huge hit.
The arrangement of FSOM getting more and more chaotic as the lyrical anxiety ramps up to a crescendo feeling like a full blown panic attack was absolutely NUTS to listen to for the first time and really have a song that sounds like how i feel in those moments

so yeah underrated as a band. one of the best frontmen out there these days. live shows can be breathtakingly generous raw performance art pieces or just messy reality & fun. either way it's captivating
Never gotten into the 1975 before but will definitely check them out now. What a song writers dream to write lines as lovely as that 'enough about me now, you got to talk about the people babe' that's awesome!
Just went and listened to the song in full, it's so good! 'Or am I just some post-coke, average, skinny bloke? Calling his ego imagination'. One day I will write lines as good as that!
@@liamneilocampo7996 Robbers is great but it's plastered in nostalgia for all of us. Definitely check out If I believe you, I like America and America likes me People And of course menswear
Not a lot of people appreciated the incredible production of this song but it's so transcendent and it really scratches an itch in my brain, exactly what I love about this band
I wasn't a listener of their music at the time, but when I attended the 2019 Leeds festival and saw them live on the mainstage they put on one hell of a performance! There was no denying their talent and work after that.
The thing I like about them is there’s a lot of meaning and storytelling/scene setting in their lyrics hidden beneath very simple sounding songs, I think ‘Love it if we made it’, ‘The City’, ‘Somebody Else’, ‘Tootimetootimetootime’, ‘It’s Not Living’ are perfect examples Their songs when you just listen to them passively can sort of be taken the wrong way, like I can imagine some of their upbeat songs have probably been played at weddings and stuff with people not giving a second thought to how dark the lyrical message actually is
Agreed. ‘Change of Heart’ is captivating too; one of the few songs that gives me goosebumps every time. Cohesive storytelling with relatable nuances and semantics - they never fail to add subtle humour that are really just snapshots from our real lives.
Been a fan of The 1975 since the Sex EP dropped. Became obsessed with them. Saw them on the smallest gig they played on their first US tour. There was no going back after that. Glad to see you’re enjoying the new stuff.
How did i not watch this video before??? I had the same reaction with this song. Suddenly I heard the lyrics (specially the "I like my men like I like my coffee" part) and I understood that The 1975 is an amazing band with great lyrics. And, yeah, they're underrated. Healy is a genius songwriter and frontman.
The lyrics are so complex and sophisticated, yet brought to a simplistic light with the instrumentation. Matt Healy is very observational with lyrics, and uses extremely clever metaphors and phrases. I'm the only one in my friend group of 3 who likes this song. I think it's a gorgeous tune with string instrumentation, lovely melodies, sounds of folk and acoustic (different to most the 1975 songs) plus clever lyricism.
Went from kind of hearing bits of the debut coming out of my sons room. To secretly becoming a fan and predicting what they would play on SNL and order they would play the songs. Now at 49 they are safely in my top 5 bands of all time and that’s a very exclusive club.
I've literally never got The 1975 until now, despite having tried so many times. This new song is fantastic though, just incredible songwriting like our man Justin said. I'm not saying they're as good as the Beatles but that string arrangement and the completely different styles of each section really gives me that A Day In the Life vibe. Wonderful
Brilliant analysis of a brilliant song… I loved their first album but was taken aback by this track… so interesting, authentic, heartfelt and clever without being smug… love it x
"The thing that put me off about this band in the first place is the smugness... but what I'm hearing here is real sincerity and beautiful and withdrawn". Got it in one. There is an element of smugness to their music, as well as everything about the band, but it exists to wrap around the sincerity. Lyrics about French poets in the first part of the song followed by a riff on beat poetry after the first chorus, numerous references to self gratification, funny voices, and an arrangement that makes the song sound more complicated than it is. All this surrounding a simple song showing sincerity and vulnerability about isolation in the rest of the lyrics. They're a band that get criticised for making broad pop music by some people and making fake deep inaccessible arty crap by others, and tend to play on everyone's opinions and expectations of them to the point of self parody, while still showing that beauty and sincerity that makes their songs special. If you get a chance listen to their new single 'Happiness' for your channel, as well as the album A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships for yourself. I think once the smugness is put into context as more than just self gratification it's a lot easier to appreciate the incredible song writing and artistic merits of the band.
Just saw them perform in Warsaw. Incredible. One of the best live bands these days. What surprised me, it's the music GenXers like me should really like, but most of the audience is in their mid-to-late teens (sometimes accompanied by parents - so sweet). But anyway, besides music, scenography, cinematic component (kudos to their video director) excellent sound not actuallly expected from the Torwar stadium. P.S. Live versions of songs are much more energetic than their album renditions, most of them danceable. In fact the entire stadium turned into a giant dancehall at some points.
Knew this would go one of two ways but you got it spot on: they’re divisive (even within their fan base) but have to be respected for doing something different in the mainstream. Great video man. I’d love to see you do an XTC video. A criminally underrated band on par with Jellyfish.
7:25 Me whenever The 1975 releases a new song. You just can't help but admire how golden Matt Healy's poetry is. What's more captivating is that the whole band makes music blend with it perfectly.
Thank you for reviewing this song. I love this band. Matty Healy is an amazing wordsmith. Lyrics like “There’s so much skin to see; it’s a simple Epicurean philosophy.” (Song:The Sound) They cross genres and experiment, so no one will like every song. But they take risks. Another great line, “If she likes it that we just don’t eat, She’s American. If she says I gotta fix my teeth, she’s so American.” (Song:She’s American)
Yes! Love, love, love this band. Matty's an amazing lyricist. Check out "The Ballad of Me and My Brain", "Sincerity is Scary", or "Loving Someone" for more lyrical gems.
The 1975 are amazing! It's easy to think they're just a generic pop/rock band, but if you dig a bit deeper into their discography they really have some special songs. So glad you made this video! Great stuff as always.
if you want to know where the name of the band came from, the frontman came across an old Jack Kerouac book once owned by someone suffering psychotic delusions, and he was struck but what the man had written around the poetry. at the back of the book was written the date “June 1, The 1975”.
Its interesting hearing you say without all of the quartet that its just a simple song. Because matty healy, the lead, said in an interview that if you take away everything its a folk album, or country, i cant remember exactly. But so cool you caught that! Edit: just heard you say theres so much sincerity. Matty talks about this album, how he just wanted to be earnest and sincere. Very cool dood.
I was the same with the 1975, discovered them a few years ago now and most of their lyrics are deeper than the happy music would suggest, really great mix of genres for every mood. Long term fan Jussy, clever lyricists are my bag it seems
I hear strong Paul Simon similarities in the vocal delivery and phrasing as well as in the music to some extent in this song of theirs at least. Paul had a knack for this type of cadence and delivery.. Shear coincidence here? Possibly,or who knows? Interesting installment, thanks!
I dont ever pay attention to pop tbh, but 1975 caught my attention a while ago now and really enjoy a lot of their music and love how they have managed to not get pinned down into any genre really. What wonderfully written art.
one of the best lyricists of our generation
Agreed, just beautiful
Traveled a bit to see their shows, had the pleasure of meeting Matty he was incredibly kind and genuine, made me love them even more
Justin you need to see them live!
I’m a 55 year old rock Mum and I have been to see them alongside my daughter every time they tour. From their early small gigs to the arenas.
You won’t be disappointed!
You could wear your beret too 😊
Frail state of mind is one of my favourite songs from this band. It's very chilled, has a British feel to it and I like the lyrical content. Somebody else will also always be a huge hit.
Frail State of Mind and I Think There’s Something You Should Know are two of my favorite The 1975 songs ever. Very underrated imo
The arrangement of FSOM getting more and more chaotic as the lyrical anxiety ramps up to a crescendo feeling like a full blown panic attack was absolutely NUTS to listen to for the first time and really have a song that sounds like how i feel in those moments
Yay I've been hoping you'd talk about The 1975! This makes me so happy to hear you react like this to them, as The Darkness and The 1975 are two of my favorite bands of all time. I'm beaming and my heart is full.
Stumbled across this on my homepage. Watched the whole thing and was engaged the whole way through. Fantastic!
Watching you so deeply appreciate one of my favorite songs makes me so happy, I may or may not be crying 😅
It's one of my favorite songs of all time (especially the live performance) it just sounds so crisp
Part of the Band is my top song in this album and I’m glad that someone else appreciates the musicality and I would like to say “poetry” of this song. 🖤
I love that you're finding out how fantastic this band is!
I've just become a huge fan of The 1975 - came back to see this clip to help it all make sense. Thanks JH
My favorite band in the world! The drummer, one of my biggest inspirations just followed me. Praying we get to make some music one day
so yeah underrated as a band. one of the best frontmen out there these days. live shows can be breathtakingly generous raw performance art pieces or just messy reality & fun. either way it's captivating
One day I will write lines as good as that!
listen to the 1075- robbers
@@liamneilocampo7996 Robbers is great but it's plastered in nostalgia for all of us.
Definitely check out
If I believe you,
I like America and America likes me
People
And of course menswear
Not a lot of people appreciated the incredible production of this song but it's so transcendent and it really scratches an itch in my brain, exactly what I love about this band
Glad someone with actual musical knowledge and understanding reacted to this song.
I had to listen to this after this. It’s intriguing. Beatleesque. Love it.
I wasn't a listener of their music at the time, but when I attended the 2019 Leeds festival and saw them live on the mainstage they put on one hell of a performance! There was no denying their talent and work after that.
Always hop back to this, pure joy!
The thing I like about them is there’s a lot of meaning and storytelling/scene setting in their lyrics hidden beneath very simple sounding songs, I think ‘Love it if we made it’, ‘The City’, ‘Somebody Else’, ‘Tootimetootimetootime’, ‘It’s Not Living’ are perfect examples
Their songs when you just listen to them passively can sort of be taken the wrong way, like I can imagine some of their upbeat songs have probably been played at weddings and stuff with people not giving a second thought to how dark the lyrical message actually is
Agreed. ‘Change of Heart’ is captivating too; one of the few songs that gives me goosebumps every time. Cohesive storytelling with relatable nuances and semantics - they never fail to add subtle humour that are really just snapshots from our real lives.
Was so cool to see you fall in love with this song the same way I did! Matty is a genius
I absolutely love it when I find someone who loves this bands music like I do!
The 1975 has remained my favorite band since I found them after the release of their first album… they really are the best band in the world
The 1975 is where pop music should head to. Great hooks, real instruments and just damn enjoyable.
Certainly my favourite band of the last ten years
Never fail
Oh, Caroline - About You - I'm in Love with You, are my top three on the album. Beautiful record.
I thought they were a teenage scream band until I saw them in TV last night. Completely blown away. From another 1975 born baby 😊
Came to the 1975 late myself (earlier this year) and I've been blown away ever since. This is a perfect breakdown of an absolutely fantastic song
Matty is genius artist, great lyricist
Justin’s articulate opinion, is so humble and true
Spoken by a true master of trade
Oh wow.. I never knew Justin did this.. underrated is what this channel is.. it’s like a musical class of ingenuity.
Wonderful
Steady on
Buahahahahahahaha
always great to hear Mr Hawkins critique acts, explain musical phrases. gives music another life for us punters.
Well done Mr Hawkins... I've actually shed a tear... Perfect song and breakdown. He's quite the lyricist
Watching you digest, dissect and explain music is exactly what I need and this world needs now. Thank you.
Thank you for this video Justin, you're awesome.
This song is so visceral. It reminds me a lot of something Paul Simon might have done. Thanks for bringing it forward.
I’ve been a 1975 fan since 2012/2013 and I have a different favorite song by them every month. They have such a diverse catalog of song types
The 1975 is such an underrated band. They can play just about any genre and have some of the wittiest lyrics out there.
That rhyming style reminds me of how Phil Lynott wrote. Lovely stuff. The verse vocal is also reminiscent of Paul Simon's 'You Can Call Me Al.'
Perfect comparisons 👌
I hear Paul Simon too! Absolutely love it.
I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your breakdown of these songs. This one was a real treat.
I just realized this is the guy from the Darkenss talking about one of my favorite bands of all time. This is so freaking cool!
their new album is just incredible people seem to write them off without even listening to them they’re amazing
Fire in my heart forever for The 1975 🔥❤️🔥Matty has all that crazy Charisma.
I love that this all off the cuff and we get to see him be like “ok whoa these are great fucking lyrics I get it now”
if you want to know where the name of the band came from, the frontman came across an old Jack Kerouac book once owned by someone suffering psychotic delusions, and he was struck but what the man had written around the poetry. at the back of the book was written the date “June 1, The 1975”.
they are some of the best song writers!!
Matty Healy’s mind is a fucking jewel in the music industry. Welcome to the fun!! You will never get bored of this band. ♥️
Interesting installment,thanks!
That was my first thought.
Well spotted and commented. 50 Ways to........ revive a song style from 50 years ago...................
Exactly. My first thought as well
Great catch
True. Sounds like Paul Simon singing on “Viva La Vida”
I love this analysis, I’d really like to see you go back through their discography having now fallen in love with them, that would be fascinating
Great idea
Would rather him do this and go listen after , something different I suppose trying to source music in a modern different approach
Thanks, I'm a middle aged man who is now considering checking out a full 1975 album.
This song came out of the blue, and really emotionally struck me. I love it.
I dont ever pay attention to pop tbh, but 1975 caught my attention a while ago now and really enjoy a lot of their music and love how they have managed to not get pinned down into any genre really. I literally love how you are gushing, you are usually really balanced and appreciative of artists and quite humble, but here you reveal a slice of happiness :D thanks for sharing!
