Context collapse has been such a huge part of Matty’s online existence, and to see the general public miss his points and nuances on multiple topics over and over again…it’s… something to be studied I think.
I really appreciated that he pointed out the shortcomings of the techniques he was using re: posting all manner of ideas on social media. I think it’s logical that within a low-context sphere like twitter, some of his posts (which he may have posted in jest, or ironically, or to showcase a radical idea [positive or negative]) will be interpreted as genuine endorsement. And also, Matty is a fallible individual who makes very public mistakes /within/ the low-context sphere of twitter, despite his good intentions. Posting one of his band’s songs in response to George Floyd’s murder comes to mind, and while yes he did it because he perceived that some of the opinions he had on the subject were already articulated in his artwork, it still came across as a self-promo. Perhaps people are quick to ‘cancel’ folks on social media (see the example Matty gave of the Mumford and Sons banjo player), and we could have a conversation about how cancellation isn’t the same as accountability/learning/growth, but not all critiques are created from within the same low-context vacuum.
i really think this convo will resonate so much for anyone who has been impacted by the 1975's art and who has been willing to take it seriously and earnestly. social media's reaction to ATVB/SATVB was maddening to witness, and i love that matty spoke so candidly and in-depth on so many of the ideas the tour explored. it was amazing as a fan to get to discuss all these ideas together in the lead up to shows over the past few years. i hope he feels a lot of pride about the impact his art has had on people bc those kinds of convos and that kind of community is not the norm.

I’m not a native English speaker, but god knows I’ve never paid as much attention in any English class as I did watching this interview 🤣. I love how Matty handles the complicated technical terms, and I do understand The 1975 a bit more through this. And I think that’s part of the reason why The 1975 as a band and Matty Healy as an artist have had such a huge influence on me in terms of art and music, even though I’m only 21 and living on the other side of the world. Matty, if you ever see this comment, hope you feel the love all the way from China❤❤❤❤
I've always viewed this guy as reasonably intelligent, but he proves here just how clever, articulate and media literate he really is. A very enjoyable listen, thank you Joshua and Matty :)
That’s a big problem for a lot of people now. People can barely afford to live WITH a full-time job, let alone have enough time, energy, or extra money to spend on creative endeavors. The death of culture starts with preventing people from building the culture.
He has a bright mind. Someone should do like a collage or short film with all his interviews, his takes on everything are so interesting and insightful. He's not for everybody and that's a positive thing. Let the people who wanna listen appreciate him
I discovered The 1975 by accident and never looked back. I love how this band just do what they do and offer something different. Thank you for having Matty on your podcast. I know he's been resistant on doing on camera interviews. He clearly felt comfortable and safe to share his ideas and thoughts. Well done! ❤
This video is kind of blowing my mind. I'm a professor, and in the last six months, our marketing team has expanded and begun to push out multiple posts a day on several platforms. I've started to get the eerie feeling that our college only exists to create content for the marketing team. This conversation also reminds me of how we recently watched a performance in class of Luigi Russolo's Futurist composition with 16 noise intoners and how this composition and instruments from 1913 seemed so ahead of where we are in 2024. Thanks for the thought provoking discussion. I'll definitely be showing this in my next class!
Sorry, but Id be incredibly irritated if I paid exorbitant fees to attend a class that played HOURS of Matty Healy (of all possible people) simply shedding their opinion of society in the broadest possible terms. What specific class would this not only be applicable, but also the best possible source material actually available?
This was a great discussion. I'm not a huge 1975 fan, but I genuinely don't understand how people can say they're not talented. They're one of the most interesting band of the last couple of decades imo, and Healy deserves a huge amount of credit for that. He's not just making enjoyable pop music, but also giving it a purpose and communicate something of substance. Some bands have a good message, others make good music, very few do both.
Matty was born in a wealthy family and had enough privilage to work on music without immediate success. They make good music, but the way he speaks about culture and music is unbearable. He talks down on people, i dont know why people are impressed by his word salads

So glad that you're making music you're genuinely interested in, Matty! I appreciate resisting the status quo of what people might expect (like a response to the recent drama). At the end of the day music is your work, and working in a job you're passionate about is way more impactful with the audience than just doing whatever is trendy. Cheers 🎉
Such a good video! I've just became a teacher and I've noticed that so many children don't identify with anything anymore. I often ask my students about their favourite music/movies and they don't have any - they "just watch Tik Tok". It's honestly sad to see.
I've never watched this podcast before but this interview was fantastic and didn't dull for a second. Both Matty and the host had a really great back and forth and are so deeply intelligent and observant and were so bang on about where we're at now culturally and artistically speaking as someone who's worked in that field and become completely disenfranchised with it because of all these things I couldn't quite put a name to before. Genuinely shocked this channel only has 21k subs. Subscribed.
This is such a wonderful eye opening discussion and I am only half way through the video. I urge everyone to listen to what they are saying. Completely encapsulates the feelings I have been having lately but unable to put to words.
In a nutshell they’re saying what a lot of people are saying. Life is becoming very isolated, very hollow, and culture as we know it is ceasing to exist in favor of ad revenue and financial gain. It feels dystopian and it’s preventing people from having any aspiration since there is no more “future” to work towards.
Warning: annoying anecdote incoming. Matty Healy’s dad, Tim Healy (from Newcastle) looks remarkably like my dad (also from Newcastle which is important because people from Newcastle have a really strong regional accent) and once an elderly woman asked my dad for an autograph and when my dad said oh I’m not Tim Healy she got really angry with him because she was convinced he was lying and didn’t want to give the autograph and chewed him out by saying ‘you think you’re such a big man but it’s fans like me that got you where you are, don’t forget where you’re from!!’ Was a story in our family for years. never heard of healy until he dated taylor swift, didnt really get it, but now i see why she was crazy about him. he's actually intelligent and thoughtful. Great, thought provoking podcast. Thanks for providing an alternative to red-pilling podcasts
Matty if you‘re reading the comments I just wanted to thank you for staying true to your art. Nowadays even good music feels lifeless sometimes because people have lost the true core of what music is about. Besides The Smiths you‘re the only band that made me sort of understand why music is such an incredible form of expression. You are a gem in the music industry and I know already that your next Album will help me tolerate this strange postmodern world a bit more. xxx
@@loloina i'm kidding, but just no. I'm not a huge fan of The Smiths, i mean i love There is a Light That Never Goes Out as much as the next man, but they are a proper band from the times when things were real and not edited to death in a timeline in logic. This 1975 stuff is ok, but i think it's like Billy Eilish or Taylor Swift ok. Well constructed pop music. Not that i'm against editing, but if you're going to edit like that be more Autechre about it - something has to be misused or it's nothing.
@@ephre Thanks for your reply! I can see your point. But I wouldn‘t categorise the 1975 in the pop music genre. They are definitely more alternative to me. You definitely can‘t compare them to Taylor or Billie in my opinion. All their songs are so unique and form such a well rounded album which is something that os quite rare nowadays
I was at the Charlotte show when you performed the sponsored apology. It was so comical and so sharply crafted. Love you Matty (even though I know you don’t like people on the internet telling you that)❤️
Wow I'm sorta a 1975 fan but Matt Healy always got my attention and it's crazy how these topics are on my mind a lot, and we're two different people without knowing each other but still think about these topics in our minds? great video!
Such great ideas and theories were explored in this video, I did not know that Matty Healy had this almost academic side to him, and his perspective as an artist was super insightful to the discussion! Definitely subscribing

never heard of healy until he dated taylor swift, didnt really get it, but now i see why she was crazy about him. he's actually intelligent and thoughtful. Great, thought provoking podcast. Thanks for providing an alternative to red-pilling podcasts
Never heard of Matt Healy before and this interview has been a pleasant surprise so far
Matty Healy is a great person and I could listen to him talk for hours
He’s a terrible person but I still love listening to him yap 😂 the bad ones are always the most fun 😭
@@leahj361what’d he do?
so many points touched on that i believe we've all been feeling but unable to articulate, it really is a strange ffing time to be alive
Man… this entire podcast series is absolutely fantastic!
Amazing job Joshua! :)
So nice to see #MattyHealy feeling comfortable and open in a conversation. Can't wait for new music!
This was such a refreshing listen. Some days I think I’m losing my mind noticing all of these nuances.
Matty if you‘re reading the comments I just wanted to thank you for staying true to your art. Nowadays even good music feels lifeless sometimes because people have lost the true core of what music is about. Besides The Smiths you‘re the only band that made me sort of understand why music is such an incredible form of expression. You are a gem in the music industry and I know already that your next Album will help me tolerate this strange postmodern world a bit more. xxx
I listened to The 1975 after reading this. You are objectively wrong.
In what way this guy has remained true to anything?
@@ephre how? Explain I‘d like to know your take?
All their songs are so unique and form such a well rounded album which is something that os quite rare nowadays
this is the most inspiring life-changing interview I've watched in a while
As a projector enthusiast " They are actually expecting people to come and revel in the aesthetic delight projectors" quote hits deep. It's so true.
2 and a half hours of Matty Healy talking about the internet? Life is worth living
genuinely so happy to see Matty looking well. we need the solo and/or 1975 electronica album mate !
I was at the Charlotte show when you performed the sponsored apology. It was so comical and so sharply crafted. Love you Matty (even though I know you don’t like people on the internet telling you that)❤️
"Showing people WHO YOU ARE through your fandom" was an incredible phrase
Wow I'm sorta a 1975 fan but Matt Healy always got my attention and it's crazy how these topics are on my mind a lot, and we're two different people without knowing each other but still think about these topics in our minds? great video!
Such great ideas and theories were explored in this video, I did not know that Matty Healy had this almost academic side to him, and his perspective as an artist was super insightful to the discussion! Definitely subscribing
I could probably listen to AT LEAST another 2-3 hours of this
What a great conversation 🙌🏻
I’ve never sat through a 2.5 hr discussion like this before, but this was captivating. Got a new follower, looking forward to what comes next.
Not him using Phoebe Buffet of Friends as an example 😂 Love this man’s mind so much
Interesting discussion, love to hear Matty chatting about music, culture, social media and the internet. Adore The 1975❤
Hearing Matty speak reminds me of the creative and intellectual aspects of Richey Edwards. But as Matty has grown older, he's even more mature, well rounded, and well spoken than Richey ever was. What an excellent interview.
I love to hear Matty yapping about anything but especially this conscious analysis of art in association with the media. Such a great and interesting interview🙌🏼
Btw I'm so excited for the upcoming album
so happy to hear from him!!! so excited to tune into this thank you guys so much!!
GOOD MORNING GUYS
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“Alternative as in they have gone to Hot Topic” - I love this already.
wouldn't normally comment on this but you guys touched on a lot of things i've been feeling/thinking about in art and that relate a lot to my personal practices. Specifically with things that have been hindering art I've made, or have been trying to make. The main reason I wanted to comment was because I genuinely found what you both had to say massively inspiring and I'd really like you to know that
I love conversations / interviews with matty. Always so engaging.
Never heard of him until the whole Swift thing but watching this interview, he's a very intelligent young man.
What a great interview! One of my favorite music artist! ❤️
Never really been into the 1975 but love this podcast, super interesting chat! Totally going to have a geez at your music now
Start with "A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships"
Ugh finally got a dose of Matty and his brilliant mind :) we miss you Matty ❤ last time u spoke u talked about oasis reuniting and lo and behold it happened 😂
2.5hrs of matty calling us idiots and translating complex topics to us… we’re so back
That was my thought 😂
If that's what you think he's doing then maybe you really are one?? 😂
@@eh2396 One cannot deny the elitist and derogatory stance taken by these two gentlemen in the video.
@@JohnGaltHasArrived 🤓🤡
@@eh2396 Which one is which?
A crossover I could not have anticipated, as someone who is politically and culturally invested in the viewpoints of both Josh and Matty, this is so cool to start tethering those neurones together
Amazing discussion, Matty and Josh! I’m trying to take it all in😌 As you mentioned, Matty, It is reassuring to hear you speak so clearly and passionately about your interests. Since the tour ended, we’ve only had IMSSS -gorgeous but haunting.
we are so back and I am seated
Interresting format and show. Always nice to get some world views I don't even have to completely agree with but you have some legit points are being made. Lovely stuff.
Great conversation. Can't help but notice that Joshua likes having guests who are attractive young men
On the basis of being young-ish males only? When Matty (who's not even traditionally attractive) is the absolute best looking of literally all of his guests thus far, Id say this argument is a bit of a stretch.
@@LD-tn6ff LOL, I'd love to see you to share this comment directly with Yung Chomsky. Also, please let Jreg know that he is now "young-ish" at 27.
What an insightful man. You both are. Great episodes so far, I'm loving the podcast.
I'm only a few minutes in this but this is already such a good interview. Speaks a lot about his fandom vs that outside perception of non fans and stands of other fandoms ahem ahem about literalism. Veryyy interesting discourse
Matty is a very much an captivating intellectual and he really carries his conversation so well. Thanks Matty it's a joy to listen to you 🫂 Hugs from South Carolina 🌙🌴 CCNB Amphitheater in my hometown is welcoming y'all with open arms ❤
hell yeah two hours of this man, i love him so bad
matty, you move me to tears. thank you for sharing more of your brain with us
Another amazing interview, love these guys.
Gotta love Matty taking the initiative to really simplify these concepts for the raving 1975 fans that will inevitably be dominating the comment section
i encourage you to take the time to read through the comments from 75 fans who have been mostly nothing but thoughtful instead of making assumptions without context, these topics are ones we’ve been discussing for years too.
Banger interview front to back. Thanks so much for this!
I'm not sure I understodd a word of it, but. Epic!
This made my week, we are so back :)
One of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened to
