      In the future Float Ride Trailers should work with Koni Suspension on implementing Koni FSD dampers, maybe as an upgrade option. FSD stands for Frequency Selective Damping, it was developed for F1 racecars after the series banned active suspension technology. The short and simple version of how they work is on slow forces they firm up (preventing body roll in cars) on big hits they allow the suspension to absorb the hit. They work great on my 2009 VW GTI. I had Koni FSD's installed with stiffer Eibach Pro-kit springs and my GTI rode smoother after the change despite the springs being stiffer.

    • @The_Opinion_of_Matt
      @The_Opinion_of_Matt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looked it up on Koni's website. They don't call it FSD anymore, but instead they call it "Special Active". In the text they say it is "KONI’s latest generation of Frequency Selective Damping Technology". Here is the link: www.koni.com/en-US/Cars/Products/Performance/Special-Active/

    I wonder what all the added motion in the goose neck does to the movement/inertia of load on the trailer itself? If it’s lessened, I could see this being a viable design for Horse trailers to also reduce stress on the animals- equestrian people I know have no sense of budget, they care more about the horses than their kids

    They should weld a Ruler on the neck of the Trailer across the gap so you don't have to have a tape measure it will be fixed on it.

    • @RedskinzFan

      @@RedskinzFan i disagree, if the rear tires of the truck hit a large bump the point where the trailer is attached to the truck goes up , but the front of the trailer does not. due to the location of the pivoting point on the trailer the truck can change position vertically ( momentarily) without changing the angle or elevation of the trailer. they are moving more independently.

    In the braking test you could see that the float trailer even transfers that horizontal braking load to a lateral load on the rear suspension. Instead of pushing the truck forward and upsetting the geometry of the truck it pushes weight down on the rear axle adding to the braking weight of the rear axle. Amazing

    I think that the air ride goose neck is pointless without air ride suspension. That setup also adds a lot of weight to the trailer with the double frame. I think an air ride hitch setup like some big RVs use and air suspension would be less expensive to build and give a better ride.

    I can see how that trailer would help improve breaking as it shifts more weight to the rear axle increasing traction I love that trailer!!!
    Yeah lifting the back of a vehicle when you’re loading something on it can be very dangerous because it can take enough weight off the tires if you happen to be on any slope at all the truck will swing around and you’ll jackknife it I had a friend do that after I had told him to make sure he put a block under the back of the trailer when he was loading a very large Bacot and he simply put the truck in park didn’t even set the parking break !! He damaged the parking pin and when he drove up on the truck which was angle downhill it picked up the back of the truck and the trailer rolled forward and jackknifed the truck damaging the cab of the truck and totaling it!! Needless to say he was fired and then sued for the damage...

Truly fabricating a ruler on the double neck design would add a level of convenience to adjust the air bags This design looks like it would add more weight capacity to the trailer. Add air ride to this trailer, a 12ft power tail, power monster jacks and hardwood flooring and and I want one. I’m checking out their website now. @Zachmansd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'll agree that the air ride can reduce transferring some forces onto the truck, mainly bounce.
    But I want to say I noticed a couple things that I think swayed this test.
    You say the float ride rode better, but I can clearly see the rear wheel of the backhoe even with the front axle of the float ride, and ahead of the front axle on the control trailer. You guys measured the front of the deck itself. What was the wheelbase from the pin to the center of the axle spread, and if there's any difference in neck length to the front of the deck? If the wheel base like I referenced is the same, then there was clearly less weight transferred to the truck, I'm sure enough to give you the difference in squat you described. I'd like to see the test done with the same static loaded weight on the hitch itself. And as well, was the control trailer a walking beam suspension? I believe that would affect the weight location too.

  • @jeremymurphy7320
    @jeremymurphy7320 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems like there would be some odd angles on the hitch and frame under a heavily-loaded hard braking situation. Maybe even a slight upward stress when the front of the flatbed drives and the gooseneck pivots to meet it?
    I'm sure the highway ride is great but I wonder about the undulations and how much it really porpoises on a bad road and what that does to a truck frame and hitch over time. Maybe I'm over thinking but maybe this is something the OEMs havent designed their trucks for...

    Was the fact that the load to toung distance is at least 2-3 ft longer on the float ride trailer considered when measuring the squat on the truck. That distance gives the trucks suspension more leverage over the load.
    3ftx2,500lb (payload rating) = 7,500 ft/lb of additional force that the suspension can apply to the trailer because of the extra toung length.

      @@mdocod that is irrelevant. As the diesel probably makes its 950lbs of torque at 1900 rpms where the gasser makes it's 430 lbs of torque at 3500.

    • @mdocod
      @mdocod 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ryanh1222 How is that irrelevant? Crank torque alone does not define how much work the engine can do. Work performed is literally a function of torque X RPM. Remember all those gears? The diesel might have twice the crank torque but if the gas can operate at twice the RPM, then it can be in a lower gear and get more torque multiplication from gearing, so at the wheels, there's not going to be much difference. The Diesel is a more powerful engine because it has a flatter power curve and higher HP ratings, so it will technically be slightly better, but the amount that it is better by is directly proportional to how much more average HP it makes. With this many gears available the amount that is is better has nothing to do with peak crank torque.
      If you're having trouble believing this, consider the M1 Abrams Tank. It weighs nearly 140,000 lbs. It is powered by an engine that only makes ~250-400lb ft of torque at 10,000-30,000 RPM. (torque declines at higher RPM). Maximum power (and vehicle speed) is achieved at 30,000 RPM X ~250lb ft torque = ~1500HP. They use gearing to match the power band of the engine to the load. At the end of this driveline, the only thing that matters is how much work is done. It wouldn't matter if the engine turned 300RPM with 25,000 lb ft of torque or 300,000RPM with 25lbft of torque, with proper gearing all of these possibilities would motivate the tank the same speed over sand.

    Now try it with a shockerhitch installed on the float ride trailer! There will still be some vibration transfer through the hinge of the trailer, but if you got a shockerhitch connection for the front then you would truly isolate the trailer vibration at all points

    So guys, at about 14:35 you say you're towing 22,000 lbs. But when checking the charts published by Ford that truck is only rated at 24,000 lbs GCWR (under CDL requirements for my state at least), putting the trailer tow rating at 16,000 lbs or so. Are you towing beyond the rating? Is that really a F350/7.3L/3.73 crew cab?

    Legal hook is the chains hooked to the chain, not the stake pocket. That’s a fine in Minnesota. The pivot should be bigger with weight transfer to under slung air bags so they couldn’t potentially blow in your face.
