      Yeah, I remember AM top 40 radio stations were all the rage back in the 1968-72 era. In any given hour, I'd hear "Stone Soul Picnic," "And when I die", "Stoney End", "Sweet Blindness." I never heard the DJ say, "By the way, all four of those songs were written by a teenage girl from the Bronx." That would have blown us away. I rate her above the great Jimmy Webb.

    I cannot think of another artist of her (Sara's) generation who would have been more appropriate to sing a Laura Nyro song at this event than Sara Bareilles. I think perhaps Bareilles' fans might come close to feeling the love for Sara that we of Laura's generation felt for Laura. I would not even try to describe that love. In the hyperbolized world of pop entertainment, I suspect I and many others have not felt another attachment to an artist quite like it. I've been fortunate to have loved and been touched by many musicians - Hendrix, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Nina Simone - who changed the way people thought about what it meant to be human, to be alive. But even among these, what Laura Nyro evoked in us was still unique - not necessarily better, but just something else. Nyro loved her songs into being, and then made love to them again each time she performed them. Listen to the live recordings. Don't gauge the audience response by its applause - gauge it by the audience silence while Laura is performing. Listen to all of her records. I don't know how she sounds to people as young today as we were when we heard Nyro in the 60s and 70s, people now in their 20s, their 30s. We do hear music through our times. That there are now people who hear what Sara Bareilles is doing gives me hope that there are people now who can hear what Nyro did. And if you can hear Nyro, I am happy for you. It's one of the sweetest feelings I have ever known.

    Grew up with Laura's albums in the house. Knew those first three by heart and then all the great 5th covers. I love when Sara makes that mistake at 3:15 (the background starts singing "going..."), and then she looks over at them, and then everything falls back in line. There's a clip from the RRHoF where you can see they redid the end.

    Grew up with Laura's music, have known it since I was a kid. This is a superb cover, a touch of the Streisand version with Laura's vocals almost coming through her.. A tough song to sing, but she nails it pretty much everywhere. The main thing is she keeps it simple, true to the melody of the song without adding all that melismatic showy superficial crap. Powerful lower register. No question Laura, who recorded with some of New York's finest soul singers, would approve. The hightlight of this performance wasn't the stop, it was just after it, when she kicks it back into rhythm. Her facial expression is remarkable, and at this point she clearly is so into the song, with a nod of the head and a wry subtle smile, she alone, by herself, powers the 25 piece band into full reprise throttle. Amazing. This is among the finest video moments I've seen in performance.
    THIS is how you do a cover to honor the original artist.

    • @EigramGn
      @EigramGn 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** There's just no pleasing your kind is there? When she does the original version of the song, she's labelled as 'lacking basic musicianship' (which totally isn't true considering that she's a talented artist in her own right) when she's doing a tribute to the original artist, and if she had decided to do her own version of the song, you'd probably lambast her and claim that she's trying to improve a classic that's already perfect.

    • @mysticsmb
      @mysticsmb 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** It's not a strict copy of Streisand, actually--there are also elements of Nyro's phrasings interspersed. As for 'musicianship' last time I looked Streisand isn't a musician, and only co-wrote a handful of her songs, unlike Bareilles who writes and produces all her own material. And lastly, all you have to do is listen to the thunderous applause from her PEERS at the end of this to know Sara knocked it out of the park.

    • @mysticsmb
      @mysticsmb 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** p.s. It's also really nice to hear this song delivered without a trace of Streisand's trademark nasality, which was her one downfall as a singer. Sara has one of the brightest, clearest tones in popular music--partly why she was an acappella champ in college.

    Laura Nyro would have approved of this. All of the people that had hits covering her songs did not do them justice. Laura was the real deal and probably the greatist female rock artist we've ever seen.

    I watched the awards to see the Beastie Boys inducted and I found an artist that somehow slipped through but whose music meant so much to me. I have a very spiritual experience that happened involving 'And when i die' Too long of a story but that song made me realize that there was more to life. Second, I'm a hip hop dj and the sample from 'save the country' that Kanye West used on ' The Glory' was so hypnotic it made the song. So grateful to her, what an amazing beautiful artist

    Great song. Love Sara. If anyone can uphold the mantle of Carole, Laura, Joni, Joan, Judy and Carly, it's her.
    No doubts about Laura being inducted. Marvelous, highly influential talent. Miss her.

    Would enjoy hearing this with a more "unplugged" arrangement like Laura's recording. (Piano, Drums, Harmonica) The Barbra arrangement is the standard for Stoney End covers from what I have heard. Sara's vocals are excellent.

    This comes nowhere close to Laura's version. Sara Bareilles has a strong voice but has NO range at all. If you want it sung with true passion and in a voice with more than one note range, listen to Laura Nyro's version. NOBODY else even comes close.

    • @nathanb53
      @nathanb53 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Saying she has "no range" is very ignorant. Maybe she didn't show the range in this video but from my knowledge she has a range of C3-C6, otherwise known as three octaves.

    I would really like to see Sara break away from all of the studio fluff. This cover is amazing but her mainstream stuff just falls short. She is talented. Why is she muddling it up with all of today's technology? Seems like a waste..

      Jennifer Suzanne Try Little Voice, her breakthrough album, and The Blessed Unrest, which was recently nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year. Like you I haven't loved her radio tracks--though they're still better than most pop fare these days--but I've become a huge fan listening to her albums and seeing her live, because as this video attests she's a phenomenal live performer! (she also has two live albums)

  • @matthewstetson711

    Sounds like Sara is by and large channeling Laura with her vocal, while using the Babs hit single arrangement. Don't care much for Streisand, figures one of the few songs by her I like was written by Laura Nyro. Gone far, far, far too soon. Glad she was inducted.

    The pot-head rock 'n' rollers just didn't get her. Instead they give kudos to an inspired amateur shank like Patti Smith before a pearl like Laura. The above performance is really Barbara's btw...not that you couldn't figure it out on your own. GO BRONX, NY!

    It's great to see the song brought back full circle, to a performance by the singer at a piano, the way Nyro did it. Streisand sung the song (as she does all her best numbers) like she OWNS it, which is why her version is so dominating. This version shows you can put the song back in its original mode, with some Streisand stylings, without having the song loose its power.
