Secret to large loops is don't think about pushing down like on a traditional lever. Force your hand straight forward and back (think pump action,) let the mechanical guidance take care of the rest. Works like a charm on my rossi large loop trapper. Feels faster than a regular loop, too!

Right. I think Hickok actually pulls down from the top of the lever and does not use the back of his hand. He discussed that in a video with a large loop gun. It takes some training to change habits.

It's not faster. That don't even make any sense. The laws of physics do apply. No matter how you slide your hand it has to be at the bottom for down and top for up. You never see over size lever at 3 gun cowboy competitions and it's because they are much slower. They are not intended to be faster they are intended for massive gloves.

If no one else mentioned "The Rifleman," I will. It starred former NBA player Chuck Connors, and ran from 1958-63 and featured a Winchester 1892 with a large loop lever. A machine screw was attached to the lever of the stunt rifle to make it fire with each cocking. It was probably chambered in .25-20 to have it fire its 12-round capacity for maximum effect.
True Grit was released in 1969, meaning this TV show beat it out by a full decade for popularizing that large-loop lever. A friend received a toy copy for Xmas 1961. It was a flimsy piece of crap, but we had fun firing rolls of paper caps with it.

I've found the best way to use the large loop lever is NOT to bring your hand down like a standard size lever, but to push your hand forward so the front of the loop rotates around the front of your hand, then bring the loop up as you normally would. There is no slop if you do it that way; give it a try.

The reason for oversized loop is so you can operate it in cold weather with gloves on. In Alaska with heavy gloves or mittens you'd probably prefer the larger loop. Big loops are extremely situational, but almost necessary for a mares leg

They’re for leather gloves hands. Popular for ranchers for this reason.

Way too much slop, causes feeding problems. The only large loop I use is for deep winter hunting when I use heavy gloves. The large loop is a creation of Hollywood. For shooting the standard lever is best.
Great demonstration. Merry Christmas and here's to bringing in the New Year with a bang!

Has been my #1 complaint with the newer Marlin rifles. I just really prefer the old style small lever. I am not a large person, and I have zero issues with gloves and a small lever. I'll just wait until they bring it back I guess!

Easy to switch out buy standard for warm weather...change over to the loopy loop when winter....

Yes sir! And if you live in the Frozen North that is a great option. Down here it's never cold enough to wear gloves that won't fit in a standard lever.

Yep florida or deep south is great! For me being cheap and handy for the money I'd just heat that loop after notching out reconfigure weld and finish...especially if rifle was at a good price ....wouldn't be a deal breaker for sure....probably could reform cold.....😎

i couldn't agree more! I own both of the Miroku Browning 1892 .44 Mag, and 1896 .45-70 Govt lever action carbines. Both are based upon the models that John Browning designed for Winchester that were the best of the best. I shoot/hunt year round and have always worn gloves. My glove size is L/XL and I have plenty of room inside the stock levers. This video is the ONLY one that I have seen operated correctly keeping the trigger finger INSIDE the trigger-loop. Everyone else I have seen lately that apparently have never shot a lever action rifle before removes their trigger finger and point it away from the lever while cycling...this is NOT correct and seriously increases time between follow-up shots. I have not shot the new Ruger Marlin, but I am sure that it is an excellent rifle. I would definitely buy the 1895 Trapper and the first (2) mods would be replacing the oversize lever, and the rear peep to a buckhorn sight. The entire purpose of a short lever gun is speed! I see all these mods Adding extra weight, and optics that lift your cheek off the stock...when you learn to shoot a lever action rifle with buckhorn sights, and carry everywhere you go, it is an instinctual shooting rifle where everything just comes together naturally, and quickly. Glad for everyone re-discovering lever action rifles especially in two of my favorite cartridges - .44 Mag and .45-70 Govt. Well Done!

The traditional loop was originally designed to be able to recock and rechamber the rifle while riding in a saddle, one handed by spinning the lever . Hence " the saddle rifle"

there has to be a snap-in insert to tighten up that opening and possibly it could hold an
