  • Just in time for the New Year, the finger lever on this guide gun shrunk! JK, but it is now appropriately sized for my liking.

Thank you for putting out such great videos. I'm 55 years old and partially disabled, so " tactical " is not a reality for me. I appreciate the videos that you make on lever actions, shotguns, revolvers and other old school guns. That's the kind of guns that I grew up shooting. Thanks for the memories. I'm sorry to hear about your sister, but I'm sure God has a plan for you. Have a great new year.

Now if they will bring back the .22 lr top loader I will be happy , they should have never stop making it but it was a competitor for their 10/22 .

Ruger still puts out their lemons. The only Ruger I ever bought was less than perfect with an ill fitting comb. It was an American Rimfire with removable comb. The high comb did not fit into the main part of the stock well, and the barrel was scratched at the factory. I know this because I watched the dealer open the box by cutting the tape and removing the rifle from the plastic bag. When I got home with the rifle and cleaned all the oil off it that is when the scratch became evident. In Canada most gun shops are final sale because it's too difficult to deal with importing and exporting over the border.

@@jimdent351 I owned one ruger , a 10/22 take down and didn’t like it , I miss my marlin model 60 , wish marlin would bring it back .

    • @jimdent351
      @jimdent351 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@frankammirati3385 They were a very common little rifle so I'm sure they'll be interested in bringing them back. Now that you mention the 10/22 line, my son ended up with one that was sub standard too. With his the mill work in the wood around the charging handle was poorly finished. There was tear out of the wood fibers in that area of the stock that was difficult to see in a gun shop whose lighting the display of firearms really well but not so well on the other side of the counter. Outside in the sunlight it's very noticeable. Ruger makes some nice ones but people have a tendency to give them too much praise. At the end of the day they're just a company with the same end goals as everyone else.

Nice Marlin. Yeah, the lever you have on it makes more sense, but some of us grew up watching The Rifleman.😉 As I recall from handloading for Dad’s 1886 (early one, 15,XXX serial number, wish I had it now), recoil was more of a hard shove than a blow. Now, max possible loads in my Siamese Mauser 45-70 are in the category of “kills on one end, maims on the other.” 😄 Happy New Year, George!

Yes, to paraphrase Garfield when he was removing a tightly sealed bottle cap from a bottle with his teeth, "It takes a REAL man to shoot stout .45-70 loads. A real stupid man!" But I wouldn't trade that exhilarating experience for anything. Watching you do that on slo-mo brings a big smile to my face and helps me save on ammo costs! :))

The Marlin logo "Danger Ahead", first appeared in the painting "His Last Stand". The painting features a dangerous starving grizzly bear being cornered by dogs and two cowboys with guns on horseback. The artist, Fredrick Remington, was a cousin of Eliphalet Remington, the founder of Remington Arms. Every Marlin logo on every Ruger/Marlin firearm is a classy tip of the hat to Remington.

I have a 20 year old 1895 model that was made by Marlin, with Ballard rifling. That was before all the crappy years. I installed a big loop lever, a Bear claw extractor, a Williams peep sight, sanded down the wood, thinned down that thick feeling front hand guard, stained and refinished with 4 coats of linseed oil. I also installed an extended magazine tube out to the end of the barrel. It now holds 8 + 1. I made a brass curved butt plate, brass follower, brass magazine front plug and brass plated the front handguard cap. It is beautifully simple, like a workingman's gun.

I love the 45-70 because it's so versatile and fun to hand load different rounds. I don't have a Marlin 1885, but I do have a modern single shot rifle. I found in the reloading manuals a really stout load that is safe to shoot in my rifle. It kicks like mule! I like to let my buddies target shoot my rifle with regular ammo and then slip in one of my hot handloads. Their reaction is hilarious 😂.

I will always remember the time I had someone in my squadron shoot at a watermelon with mine.
He had time after firing to raise his head from the rifle, look downrange, be puzzled, look back at me and ask "Did I hit it?" before the chunks of watermelon started hitting the ground with a splat. They had flown so high that it took that long for them to come back down.

Thanks for the nice video! I have a 2019 Remlin CBA. Something about the octagon barrels that I really like. I shortened my butt stock 1 3/8 inches and installed a grind to fit Kick Ezz recoil pad which also measures 1 3/8" keeping the lop the same and giving the wood a hand rubbed oil finish. Turned out to be a very pretty rifle and it will be with me until I die. The recoil pad on your Ruger looks to very similar to what I put on mine. Never enough 45-70 vids

Great video as always! I was super happy to have found your channel. There's far too little good lever action content on here. Your channel is top notch! I'd love to see you do something with Garrett cartridge hammerheads! Your take would be very welcomed! It's top of the heap as far as I am concerned. Although the majority of my shooting with it was a fews years ago and mostly through my original Guide gun, I have since done a little testing in my 1886 which is identical to yours. And I'm happy to report that the recoil is much less painful. But performance is also improved!

Really nice video, so thanks for taking the time and effort to make it. Love the Marlin lever guns. I bought one back in the mid-1980s that was in
.444 Marlin caliber. Great shooting gun for sure. It's 265 gr bullet really hit with authority. I used to think of the .444 as the .44 super mag due
to its .44 caliber and extra inch of case capacity. It had hefty recoil but anyone who's shot a .45-70 or a 12 ga magnum load knows all about that.
I would LOVE to see a new Marlin lever gun as a companion for my Ruger Blackhawk in .41 mag. Love the .41 mag round in my Ruger pistol. It's
the most powerful handgun I can shoot well, so it's definitely the gun / round for me. I also handload my own ammo and have since 1981. One
can work up some pretty stout loads in the .41 mag and there are commercial loads that exceed 1,000 ft-lbs of energy, which is plenty for hunting
medium sized game out to 150 yards. Here in the Pacific NW there are plenty of hunting places available that are heavily treed and that have a lot
of brush as well. Not that any bullet plows through brush but because of the brush, shots tend to be close in a lot of places. 75-80 yards is a typical
shot in a lot of places and that's well within the stopping power range of the .41 mag, especially from a 16-18" rifle barrel.

I own one of the last .357/.38 Marlins made at the North Haven factory . . . 2011 IIRC . . . I had warranty work done, but by then Remington had taken over, so my barrel has both 'JM' and 'REM' proof marks! Just needed some threads chased . . .
The wood, fit and finish, excellent. But, the internals were rough as hell. I disassembled the rifle, filed and stoned all the surfaces until tool marks were polished away for a mirror finish, and the action smooth as butter.
I added a Williams adjustable peep sight and a new trigger . . . all I need now is a larger loop and to loosen up the lever latch.

I enjoy your videos George. You're right about people thinking the 45-70 is over kill for deer. I got my first one and started reloading for it in 01. I've loaded all kinds of bullets at different velocities and those are the keys to what you want to shoot, bullet and velocity. In the fall I shot a squirrel stealing pears off my tree with a cast 215 grain bullet at about 900fps. I hit it through the ribs and I was able to skin it and it's in the freezer now. Just a caliber size hole in and out. If that had been a 300gr hp at 2,400 fps it would have made a mess of it for sure. That was a load I came up with for armadillo control around the place and sometimes even they run 20 or 30 yards after being hit with it but its enough to do the job. That's the bullet I sent double loaded to Jeff of Taofledermaus for fun btw. I've seen lots of meat damage on deer with powerful loads with bullets designed for lower velocities but kept reasonable it's not bad. I'll send you some bullets to try since I know you reload. Happy New Year. It's good to see you're a brother in Christ.

Just found your videos recently after having gained interest in lever guns and am itching to pickup either a Henry or a Ruger made Marlin in 357 magnum. Your calm and informational videos are great treat! Hope you have a blessed new year 🙏

@Target Suite Do you know if they have resolved the issue with the rubbing of the hammer? I would like to buy one of these gbl in the coming weeks but was trying to wait it out till the problem had been fixed.

I haven't heard for sure. But I imagine they have. That is a question I will ask the Marlin Folks at Shot Show in a couple of weeks

Marlin pulled the 45-70 from the brink of being obsolete, with the guide gun concept!
The 45-70 is a Grand Ol Gal, with lots of character!
Thank you Ruger for saving a almost perfect Rifle from obscurity!

Nice cheek weld while levering! ;-)
But, closer, yet NOT FOR ME. I probably will never see a proper FULL length octogon barrelled, blued ,walnut stocked version (better yet, half ocotgon & round) edition. Nope, that kind of craftmanship must have died with our ancestors at Marlin and WInchester. The Henry company is a little bit more that way, but the mag tube and medium barrel length is still wanting. I reckon I am just too picky.

It never ceases to amaze me, how little affect even a round like the 45/70 has on bowling pins.
They just stand there and soak it up and kind of topple when hit😂
    Always enjoy your vids
